Had anyone ever put together a list of a bare bones setup for a beginner?

Here is a beginner set up @Ripped

60ml syringe
18 gauge needle
Caulking gun
Zip ties
Syringe filter
100 ml beaker
5 ml beaker
Stirring rod
Bb
Ba
Carrier oil in this case mct
Gloves

Not in the pic:
Thermometer
Standard 3ml syringe w/23 gauge
Pre sterile vials (10ml, 50ml, 100ml)

Things to invest in once you have experience:
Bottle top filter w/ pump (eliminates the need for caulking gun and 60ml syringe)
Digital hot plate
Autoclave
Uncapped vials and crimper.
Magnetic stirrer (eliminates the need for a hot plate even though i like to filter oil warm)20170513_120045.jpg

Do you use the 5ml breaker for BA and BB? I have been using 3ml and 10ml syringes with an 18g needle attached.

Not that im justifying my water usage but i used very little water and never let it get passed a simmer. 249° was the max temperature i recorded this run. I agree with you that the water bath is unnecessary but like i mentioned before i wouldn't trust standard glass on a hot plate like that. (Even though these are supposedly rated to 350°) I work a lot with glass and have seen them break with less heat. Boroscilicate beakers is the next thing on the menu for me. Like i said i completely agree with you and anybody reading this please invest in boro beakers and do not use water!
I went through the same thing... water first couple tries and thought glass would break... just set an empty beaker on the stove or dry pan for 30 mins and check to make sure it can take the heat... doesnt take much heat... great photos and such... very helpful.

Honestly the glass is rated to about 300° Fahrenheit which is way more than you need for most compounds. I didn't really realize they were rated so high to be completely honest lol. Good suggestion on testing its heating threshold though.

Yeah i use it for ba mostly makes it faster and easier for me. They came with the set i bought i got like 15 of them.
I was reading that BA when heated evaporates very fast... lower evap temp than water...so now I add it last after raws and solution is mixed. Any thoughts?

Alcohol in general evaporates very quickly when heated. BA can take some heat though (boils at just over 400° f i believe ) but i do usually add it at the end anyways.

Heated magnetic stirplate= $100
Stirbar= $3
Bottle top filter= 1 for $14 case for $100
Hand vacuum pump=$30 or electric vacuum pump=$50 (ebay) $77 (harbor frieght)
500 or 1000ml beaker=$10
Digital scales
30 ml syringes=$5(tractor supply)
60 ml syringes=$5 (tractor supply)
12 ml syringes=$5 (tractor supply)
Ba/bb/carrier oil
10 ml vials/crimper=$80 or get pre sterile vials
70% alcohol
Distilled water
Aluminum foil
Glass pan to put bottle top filter in incase houseing breaks or somehow tips over oil will be caught in glass pan and just have to refilter
Hairnet, gloves and dust mask or surgical mask.
I recommend going ahead and getting vials and a crimper from ebay if you plan on doing this for awhile it will pay for itself in notime. I also recommend either going with a buchner filter or fox autofil bottletop filters and electric vacuum pump and it will save you alot of time and you dont have to worry about messing with syringe filters (buy the stuff now or buy it later). Most people sterilize in the oven but I suggest keeping a look out on an auction for used medical equipment and getting an autoclave with a drying function like a pelton and crane. If you dont have a drying function you will have to dry in the oven anyways.

Plz don't kill me for asking, but does the .22 syringe filter have luer locks on both side? One for the 6CC syringe to attach to and one for the 18g needle. I've seen some 6CC without the locks

I'm gonna throw something out here too. Getting together equipment for my first brew...

The snap on plastic caps for sterile vials (medlab supply)... Are they like little "condoms" for sterile vials? I plan on filtering through syringe first go around. But the idea of the vials sitting there with stoppers exposed kinda makes me uneasy.

Fill vial with the pump put silicone stopper on (silicone doesn't break up) repeat, then go back the use your vial crimper with aluminum and plastic tops.... With no 10 cc pump just use 60cc syringe and same process... I've never had an issue...
