the judicial system is slow so cases, especially when high-paid lawyers have their way, can take years to go to trial. the defendants are hoping this will somehow help them. not sure how but that is the motivation.

as a former long-hair who got his balls busted for no good fucking reason, i also don't like cops much either. but the cops don't let illegal immigrants into the country. as a matter of fact, they hate the fact that all these fuckers are allowed into the country. the cops also do not allow people to fly, not run, planes into buildings. don't know where the fuck you got that idea from. if it were up to the cops, they'd lock the crack-selling cocksucker immediately and forego his due process.
