hey bros.......just had a scan of my knee,as it turns out i have a tear in the cartilage of the knee(the meniscus). doc says i can live with it, or get it operated on. there way of fixing it is to cut out the damaged section. he says i will be losing about 10%. i really dont know what to do  when asked if it would feel 100% after it heels from surgery, the answer was no one knows every one is different.

anybody have or had the surgery????? i really need feedback on what to do.

all I know is that they can replace the medial meniscus with a fake one... but if its your lateral you are fucked as they have yet to make a reliable prosthetic since i guess everyones lateral is differnt.. Maybe you could just hit up some GH (low dose, long term cycle...) im not sure if that would work but maybe it would... you better ask around to some of the more experienced and knowlegeable people on that subject

If it's just a little tear on the outer edge of eithe meniscus, they'll just clip it....no big deal. You'll be out about 4 weeks. If you don't have any pain at full flexion or extension, I wouldn't worry about it.

I am a 54 year old ex marine with a bad right knee. Einstein is completely correct
I know Ive had 6 scopes and 2 major surgeries and my injuries were much more severe than yours. I would not have the scope until I was sure I needed it though. I was walking the day of getting it scoped (not real well though) and working out 3 weeks later. Glucosamin Chondrate is something you want to get acquainted with. My orthopedic guy recommended the Cosamine DS brand available at Wal Mart.

yes.....its on the outer edge. like you said he just whats to cut it off were its torn. i will be loosing approx 10% it was estimated.

i dont have any pain walking. its when im squating, climbing stairs, jogging and mostly at work, up and down a latter and staging all day.

dowstrategy.......are you still sqatting? what are you doing for leggs? i still want to be walking at your age :D lol.

you think i should wait to get the surgery and try cosamine for now?

thanks to everyone

Walking

Damn straight Im walking! lol Squats are out :( I do leg presses and leg curls for hammys. I am going to have a knee replacement 1 of these days but Uncle Sammy sends me a little check every month (202/mo) in return. I like the thought of the Golden Eagle financing my gear LOL.

Forgot about the cosamine question; I think its worth a try. The doc tells me it helps about 40% of those who use it. He told me to try it for 6 weeks min to see if its not helping by then it won't help at all. It helps regenerate and lubricate the joints. I don't see why you wouldn't try it. It will NOT heal the tear! Scope can repair that. I don't think anyone should rush into knee surgery; IMO your knee will never be as strong after no matter what. I also believe it sets you on a sure fire path for arthritic changes later in life.

thanks dowstrategy for your insight.......this really sucks. squats are my favorite exercise. thing is, presses hurt as much as squats. my doc says i can squat with medium to light wieght. when asked if this will cause futher damage the answer was.....i dont hold a crystal ball only time will tell. oh well

thanks again

The surgery is no big deal, but if this is keeping you from squatting, get it done. I had generalized degradation of both menisci in one knee.....Adequan is the only proven compound to generate cartilage regrowth, and it worked wonders for me.....as well as many others. Intra-articular growth hormone injections is another option, although the injection is tricky.

I had my left knee repaired for a medial miniscus tear in '94. In '99 I was at my strongest (I olympic lift and was 41 in '99 and snatched 270 and clean and jerked 330.) All time highs for me. I also back squatted 530 and front squatted 430 (also pr's). All were done after this knee surgery. You will come back and lift stronger than before if you train right.

knee

Snyper; your knee injury is easily repairable and you should recover quite easily. My knee injury was much more severe and involved signifigant ligament and cartilage damage and I have now have severe arthritis in the joint that is why squats are out for me. I agree with what others are telling you. I do believe that your knee will never be as strong after surgery. Having said that there are precautions and things that you can do to protect it.

i tore my medial meniscus in two seperate places and dislodged another piece of it my junior year of high school. it's been 7 years after surgery and 4 years since i started lifting. about 1 year after i started lifting both legs were finally equal in strength and size again. the thing abou mine is i didn't really lift or do any pt for it after i had the surgery. i could easily have been back to 100% within a couple of months had i been active in weight lifting at the time.

I had my knee scoped this year and was 100% within a month. The recovery period is largely dependant on what they do once they are inside. Once they insert the scope and look around, things can be worse or better than the MRI indicates. I had 2 negative MRI's, but because the pain was consistent, they went in with a scope and found some damaged tissue and cut it out. I walked out of the hospital and was running within a week and full strength within a month. If the tear is large enough, they will sometimes stitch the cartilage back. This causes the recovery period to be much longer. Feel fortunate that they just want to cut some out. If it's really bothering you, I'd say go ahead and do it. If you rehab properly, you'll be back full strength in no time.

THANKS MY FRIENDS FOR ALL THE INPUT........nico cujo, your story gives me hope.

UPDATE-after talking it over with my wife i decided to do the surgery, this winter, when work is slow. i can tough it out for now. i also checked with my insurance and they will cover the wholething........that was a relief

Yeah, Adequan is polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. Right now it's not FDA approved, so they've marketed it for vet use until FDA approval. There is a very large human clinical trial going on right now. I asume FDA approval will shortly follow. It stimulates cartilage regrowth....it works wonders IMO. There are several vet sites that sell it....thay all "require" a script, but they tend to "forget" to ask for it ;) and ship it immediately upon ordering (hint hint)
