Ok i could be paranoid but this really scared the hell out of me.....After checking me email on hushmail, a pop up screen came up Saying my computer has detected that my PC has been infected with SPYWARE which can transmit you email activities such as passwprds and such to third parties without my permission. It then goes on to say that i can click on a button at the bottom to download a free scanner to scan my PC for spyware. WTF?!!??!!? AM i screwed or something, what should i do? SHould i download the scanner??

It's a pop up, nothing more, at least I don't think. I wouldn't worry about it. Hopefully you have a good antivirus software installed.

yea i do have a good antivirus-i was just hoping this isnt something someone sent to my computer to try and bust me or something. Thanks Primo,.....ANyone else know anything about this, just to make sure

No Worries

No Worries.

It's nothing more than a pop-up advertisement.

However, if you got this pop-up while only visiting hushmail, then you do have one minor problem. That's because hushmail doesn't have pop-ups.

You likely have a program running on your computer (or installed as a browser component) that is popping up ads on your computer. It's nothing more than an annoyance, but you should get rid of it anyway.

I suggest paying for Norton's Antivirus Software and have it remove it. Another alternative (free) is to go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and download the free program called "Adaware". Run this program and it will get rid of all those annoyances for you.

As for someone reading your e-mails and getting your passwords, that's not likely. You simply experienced a popup ad.

Yes, it occured while i was using hushmail ONLY, and nothing like that has ever popped up before and it was a pop up from internet explorer not like an advertisement it was like my computer detecting this thing that records what im doin on the computer and my com, puter was just making me aware of it.

the other bros are right only advertising, though I am surprised in came in hushmail. To eliminate those annoying popup ads download the google toolbar it has a popup blocker built in it works great and its free. Here's the link bro... http://toolbar.google.com/ best.

Thanks a lot fellas this really eases my mind. i thought i was going to get popped or something...i guess you get kinda paranoid when your expecting gear in the mail within the next day or two

It is obviously a new piece of spyware. I run spybot search and destroy with adaware because one catches stuff the other doesnt and vise versa. Also you have to UPDATE both programs right after you download and do so one a month.

add ware

Bro, was definetly a advertisement, they make them look real official these days. You really need some professional level firewall protection. I've got Zone Alarm Pro. It's totally the shit. Complete control over all Adware, E-mail, Privacy,
Internet tracking, the works. Plus all levels are adjustable. Don't worry your safe!!! graybass

same thing happened to me but both my dvd and CDR drives popped open at the same time. Scared the shit out of me at the time.

I would still recomend getting spybot and adaware. Go ahead and download the
free spybot search and destroy and you will more than likely find out that you do have some tracking software on your computer. This is mostly from sites you visit (usually shopping sites) that try and track what type of shit you want to buy. Xupiter/oribitz is the bastard I always get, and my firewall doesn't seem to be able to block it.

yea, get adaware, its a miracle worker, if you dont know you have spyware on your pc wait til you run adaware, you'll be amazed.

THis happens to my dad all the time; something will pop up sometimes make an alarm noise, tell him that it has been detected that his computer has errors or might be damaged. i was there the other day and this same spy ware popped up...explained that he could have spy software embedded on his harddrive, said something like click here to check, he freaked out, he thought his girlfriend was spying on him (he was chating w/ chicks and look'n @ porn) :p

he clicked it and it "skanned his coputer'' and found like 200 possibe infected program and/or possible spy programs; then it said click her to download our $50 anti-spy software.

he was gonna do it til i explained that that was their (marketing &/or advertising)

decent software

LAvasoft's adware is good, but I prefer Norton's systemworks. When the computer starts getting really sluggish, I've found registry nasties that Lavasoft missed.

Eraser is a good disk shredder program.
