“I understand the National Academy of Science’s strong support of the theory of evolution,” said Texas A&M University nutritionist Karen Beathard. “At the same time, this is a theory. As an educator, parent and grandparent, I feel very firmly that creation science based on Biblical principles should be incorporated into every biology book that is up for adoption.”

The president of Texas Freedom Network, Kathy Miller, worries that the decisions of reviewers like Beathard will turn Texas into a “laughingstock”:

The significance of changes to Texas textbooks cannot be understated. It is the largest textbook market, and publishers tailor the content of their textbooks to appease its State Board. Any alteration to the content of a Texas textbook will be felt across the country. As Michael Hudson, the Texas director of the People for the American Way noted, Texas conservatives have “been able to use our special situation in Texas to impose their narrow views on the nation as a whole.”

The Texas review panel also wants to place disclaimers on evolution in the textbooks. Such disclaimers would likely include a favorite attack on evolution that there are supposed “holes” in the theory. Creationists claim there are no transitional fossils in existence that could prove evolution in species. In fact, many such fossils have been found by scientists throughout history.

At least hundreds, possibly thousands, of transitional fossils have been found so far by researchers. The exact count is unclear because some lineages of organisms are continuously evolving.

Creationism has no place in our education system. It has no scientific basis and would alienate students who practice other religions or not at all. It’s a way for conservative Christians to indoctrinate our children, and would only confuse them in the long run. Only actual science belongs in classrooms and textbooks. Leave creationism in church and the homes of Christians who want to teach it to their children. Just because creationists want their kids to be stupid, doesn’t mean the rest of us want ours to be.

“Those who cavalierly reject the Theory of Evolution, as not adequately supported by facts, seem quite to forget that their own theory is supported by no facts at all.”
~English social scientist Herbert Spencer in the 19th century
