safety of statins

Do you think statins are safe?

The more i read about them, the more i think they should be avoided. Only had sides from crestor anyway.

Public Citizen petitioned the FDA in 2004 and 2005 to recall Crestor. The advocacy organization’s health research group documented cases of patients who developed rhabdomyolysis after taking the drug.
Rhabdomyolysis is a severe form of muscle damage that can lead to permanent kidney damage, coma and sometimes death.

Public Citizen demanded the FDA recall the drug to prevent further incidents of rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure or kidney damage. The FDA denied the petitions, but the agency later required AstraZeneca to add warnings to the drug’s label about a risk of developing rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure.

In its 2017 annual report, AstraZeneca acknowledged it had faced several Crestor lawsuits over rhabdomyolysis and other injuries.
“In the US, AstraZeneca was defending a number of lawsuits alleging multiple types of injuries caused by the use of Crestor, including diabetes mellitus, various cardiac injuries, rhabdomyolysis, and/or liver and kidney injuries,” the report stated. “AstraZeneca has resolved all active claims with regard to this matter.”

This made me think it would be probably a good idea to take a statin with my blast/cruise lifestyle. They are also highly praised in other forums. But i'm not so sure about that anymore. Just going by bloodwork and seeing that your numbers improved is maybe not that helpful if you consider the possible side effects.

when i try to find decent studies on statins and how they effect longevity i don't find much. The manufactures have that data but don't release it for some reason. They can show how many les heart attacks, but cholesterol is used in most tissues. The brain needs and makes it's own cholesterol but statins can lower the amount in the brain. so not sure how well that is for the brain, for 1 example.

Blood pressure and LDL are the two ingredients leading to what disables, and ultimately kills most people.

BP is stupidly easy to control and most fail to do it, yet without question the lower your BP the better your long term health outcomes. I just read a study that said 15% elite athletes in their 20's have uncontrolled high BP, which is insane.

So controlling the other ingredient in this deadly combo makes sense, unfortunately it's come at the price of muscle pain for many, which measurably reduces movement, leading to its own problems. However most doctors think on balance the choice between the benefits of lower LDL and some pain and reduced movements is a no brainer and statins are a must, without regard to qualify of life. Most doctors seem solely focused on adding years to life, with less regard to adding life to years.

Unfortunately, after decades of doctors noticing their patients on statins seemed to develop diabetes at a higher rate, finally, the anecdotes turned into research and it's true.

But there are other ways to address this risk without the downsides of statins. A repurposed drug called Bempedoic acid is one, and the other are of course GLP meds. Even on a non-weight loss dose, when GLP receptors are activated in blood vessels, inflammation is lowered making them less "sticky" in laymen's terms. Activated GLP receptors in atrial tissues slow, halt, and even reverse cardiac remodeling, which makes stroke and heart attack causing afib less likely. This benefit is higher in people with a normal or low BMI.

Finally, gene therapies are nearing approval that will lower cholesterol for 3 months or more with a single injection, also bypassing statin sides.

Genes, not diet are primarily responsible for cholesterol levels, so while diet and exercise can make a positive improvement, we need a pharmaceutical helping hand on this one if you want to cheat nature's intent for you die earlier than you'd like.

I have family history of high ldl and total and I recently started taking crestor once a week to start trying to get ahead of it.
Will update if I have negative sides, but assume once a week for now should not have any sides! Did not want to start taking more meds but knowing what a killer heart disease is, felt like the best thing was to start!

Beastmode I am not sure taking Crestor once a week would have any therapeutic value.
