Yes, walking uphill loads the calves very well. very good. Basically calves are worked all day and stabilize your body. So most who struggle or say my calves don’t grow don’t work them enough.
Who has the biggest calves? Mailmen/women and balarinas. This is because they work the 8+ hours per day.
When we go to the gym and do let’s say, 15 reps with 3 sets that really is nothing at all and is why we see zero results from a muscle group that is used all day.
Our goal is to recruit more satellite cells to the area and force them to grow and how to do this is doing reps of 100 per set and getting total of 600-800 reps in. you can do more per set than 100 if you are able, but by 100 you will be hurting.
Or you can do like taco did and do 200 reps per day for several days in a row. This will also force them to grow. But you will be hurting like others have said but how bad do you want calves?
