In early summer, after the 2007-08 academic year ended, the University Interscholastic League reported that only two high school athletes out of more than 10,000 randomly tested for anabolic steroid tested positive.
Make that four.

That's according to an updated report the UIL recently sent to members of the Texas Legislature. In addition, there were 22 "protocol positive results," students who refused to take the test or didn't show up for the testing.

So, for all practical purposes, 26 high school athletes tested positive for steroid use, said UIL athletic coordinator Mark Cousins. The UIL is the governing body overseeing the $3 million-a-year steroid testing program that the Legislature overwhelming approved in last year's session.

The 14-page report pleased Rep. Dan Flynn, R-Van, co-author of Senate Bill 8, the steroid-testing legislation.

"This shows that the program is working," Flynn said "The testing is a deterrent. The students know they could be tested and stay away from steroids."
