Too much protein from shakes?

Right now im trying to cut down the weight a bit and the only way to keep my calories low is to go vegatarian, but ive been getting protein from shakes, all 100% whey protein. I've still been lifting and doing increased cardio, but I'm wondering the amount of shakes ive been drinking, up to 6 a day at 20g protein per shake, is too much in shake form. Some friends of mine say that i should try replacing some shakes with soy protein, and others say that i really need meat to keep my muscles. anyone have some ideas?

Give us some stats first. male/female, weight, age, estimated bodyfat %.

In general though, its not a good idea to use protein shakes as your only source of protein. You would be better served eating some lean beef, chicken, turkey or fish.

P.S. Soy protein sucks.

Im male, 20 years old, 175# and about 15% bodyfat. I tried cutting out my red meat first but i really wasn't losing the weight, but now with just vegtables and shakes im losing a pound or two a week. I've been on this diet for 3 weeks so far and have dropped 5 pounds, so im pretty happy with that, i just wanna make sure its not all muscle weight that im losing.

i would think that if you are only eating veggies and whey that you are most definitely losing muscle. You are probably not eating nearly enough calories, as veggies are the least calories dense foods around and due to their fiber can keep you feeling full. This is a very good thing, because when I am cutting I will snack on raw broccoli a lot, but I still never go below 2000-2500 cals/day. That is still pretty low for me, 'cause I have about 70lbs on you.

right now im eating about 1800-2000 calories a day, i forgot to mention my brekfast is still 3 eggs and two pieces of toast to get me goin in the mornig. after that its all greens and protein shakes. I might try and adding one or two grilled chicken breasts a day and dropping a pound of broccoli or something.

i would add some chicken or lean red meat in there. all the greens are good for you but won't help keep your body in an anabolic state.

By definition, dieting is a catabolic state to begin with.

Soy protein is one of the worst things a male can ingest, there are excellent articles on this subject at t-nation.com (testosterone.net) do a search for soy protein articles, u will be shocked especially in regards to soy based infant formulas, really crazy stuff.

Where did you get this idea from? I've got my calories at a paltry 2500/day(I weigh 100lbs more than you) and I don't eat a single vegetable on pretty much any day.

I'm stuffing my face full of broccoli right now. Veggie-Hater!

LOL. There's a place here that's started selling chicken salads. They advertise with a chick singing about being a vegetarian, and how much better her life is now that her salads have meat. The only line I can remember is: "The grilled chicken salad is so very tasty, I eat it for lunch and now I'm not so pastey." Or something like that. It's really quite humorous.

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE meat, but i like getting hotter girls a lot more. This vegetarian thing is only temporary. I've always kept a total of my caloric intake and when i was still eating meat i was intaking around 2800 calories a day. I'm not really sure how i was doing it either, i tried smaller portions and such but i found that i was always hungry. with what i'm eating now im never hungry and still eating around 2000 calories a day. I'm definatly staying away from the soy though, did some research and found that its pretty crappy.

Dude, tuna and chicken have a very low amount of calories. You should eat those.

edit- And there is absolutely no way in hell you are eating 2000 calories if you're living on lettuce, peppers and 120 grams of protein. That's a 600 calories TOPS.

Say goodbye to any muscle you do have.

Furthermore, if you're really eating 2000 calories where only 480 of them are protein, then you have AMPLE room in your carbs and fat department to slash and burn the calories.

You absolutely have to be eating a bunch of grains to be able to have any appreciable amount of calories above the 480 from your protein. So, it's really very simple. Eat a bunch of protein containing foods. Holy smokes, it's 2800 calories again! No problem. Eat 1000 less calories from carbs/fats and, voila, you're at an even lesser caloric intake than you are at now.

You can have that advice for free, but the next paragraph is going to cost 3 cents a letter. ;)
