Too pumped?

Has anybody else experience pumps so painful that you have to cut your training sessions short?
It's similar to the lower back dbol feeling, but I'm not taking dbol, so I can't "just stop taking it and the pain will go away". Anybody experience this and/or have suggestions on how to get past it? It gets frustrating to have to leave the gym after one warm up set and one work set. (It's most common in my forearms and front delts even when not directly training either.)

Thanks for the input.

You're just an anabolic animal! :D

You could always do a few sets, get pumped up, go ride the bike for 5 minutes or until the pump subsides, come back and do a few more sets, etc.

Or, do supersets and try to train around it. Do one set of pulldowns followed by one set of squats which would let your forearm pump subside and let you go back to your second set of pulldowns.

I usually just do a lot of stretching to pass the time while the pump goes down and then continue back and forth like that.

Or just lower your overall anabolic dose and that too should help.

Good luck,

I know what you mean man - today was heavy legs and light back\bis for me.... My biceps and lower back were so pumped that I only did 3 sets for each. That is the first time it felt like one of my muscles were going to explode. After romanian deadlift for lower back/hams (the only lower back ex i could do for the day) I did heavy squats and that seemed to make the pump in my lower back and bi's go down via blood diversion i guess.

Just like MaxRep said - A heavy compound exercise involving different muscles is the only thing i can get to destroy my pumps.

I usually do squat first but couldn't get a rack right away today. Thank heavens it worked out like that.

I hate that feeling. It is counterproductive to training and I have suffered from it over the years.

I tend to take longer breaks and attempt to avoid the pump as much as possible and certainly if it is going to impede my training effort. I find that becoming excessively pumped seems to impede force output....like in other words, you're not as strong when you are excessively pumped. During times like those, I take a good 5 minute break and watch the chicks on the stairmasters or something, and then go back and have at another set.

There are many factors, one is simply becoming too big...I know that sounds funny but it seems like impingements occur when you start getting really massive. I dont have that problem now but in the past, my shoulders and triceps use to be a real problem area and I would become very uncomfortable with an excessive pump...but that was back when my arm use to go numb if I had it in the wrong position in bed. Like I said, I dont have that problem anymore.

Gentlemen - Thank you all very much for the advice. I will give all of those things a try. I do think it resulted from a fairly sudden weight gain.

Which I guess that brings up another question I have.....what is the average amount of weight males tend to put back on in the weeks immediatley following a BB show? (MaxRep - I was well over 230 when I jumped on the scale this morning.)

For someone your size, I'd say you're pushing the envelope. Go easy on the fun food or you might start splitting at the seams! ;)

Considering your recent contest condition and low BF, for you to now weigh 230 + you must look unbelievably huge.

Good job... you freak :p

I did start to limit all the fun food...I only allow one junk food meal per day. And even that's a struggle!! I swear my car pulls to the right whenever I drive past a KFC or a dairy queen.

I don't readily see it (call it BDD or what have you), but the numbers might possibly place me in the freak category...or the soon to be freaky.

I have a few pictures remaining on a role of film at home, so I might see if I can take a few "two weeks later" pictures to compare. I am still eagerly waiting on the other ones though. :(
