Training the wife

I started weight training with my wife as of yesterday. Heres a little background. As a typical female, she has only done cardio and machines, no free weights. We had a baby a little over two months ago, she gained about 20 extra pounds after the birth but she holds her weight well. Her diet is good, she had gestational diabetes so had to control her diet and has continued to do so. Her goals are to increase lbm, drop bf and work on her physique. She really likes ainsley rodriguez's body.

I discovered right away she has no strength at all and I have to teach her everything from the ground up and go extremely slow. Right now Im showing her the basics; form, which lift for each muscle. Yesterday we did legs. Tonight we did back and bis. Tomorrow I have no clue what to do with her.

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as a workout program from a beginner female? I was thinking of doing full body until she builds strength and gets better form (not hst). Focus on compound lifts for a solid base and transition into a more traditional routine. Sorry, but Im at a loss when it comes to training a woman and I know some of you have very fit wives. Spill the beans.
 
I had a hard time training with all ex girlfriends. I usually date women who barely workout or just do cardio. It always ended in me becoming too frustrated and them going back to cardio.

Now the current gfriend I do all body weight exercises with some box jumps, burpees etc... it works for me because I count it as my cardio..win win
Then I can train weights solo :)
 
Something simple like a 3 day full body or PPL should be good until she gets the hang of it.

As silly as it is, the one good thing to come out of this recent Instagram "fitness model" craze is that it has got a lot of girls at least warmed up to the idea of lifting weights.
 
I've had mine doing full body circuit type training about 3-4 days a week, on my off days at my place as in not to distract from what I'm doing at the gym haha..where I have her do kettle bell work and bodyweight exercises, she's lost 20lbs in a little over a month doing so, of course she's been on a set number of calories per day as well. Started her off at 2 rounds of circuit training with the reps being relatively low and now have her going 5 rounds with higher reps with additional exercises afterwards, has been great watching her progress.
 
I usually have my wife start with a full body circuit type training 3xs a week. legs on a seperate day. It will help her body build strength. after About 5 weeks I have her switch to a single body part per day routine. M-f. It worked well for my wife and she lost all baby weight fast. Only thing wifey was unhappy about is she lost to much weight and lost her tits.

On a brighter note she's pregnant again and has her to tits back...:D
 
Thanks for the replies. Ill pry do a ppl with her because Im familir with it and its an easy protocol. I like pmacs idea about traditioning into something more traditional, will do a primary and secondary 6 days a week. Its very hard and frustrating but will be worth it in the long run. I want us to have a healthy, fit family for my kids to look up to. And the instagam/fb trend really inspires her. Eventhough I had to push her away from crossfit and other gay trends.
 
Just a recommendation, but whatever program you go with I would recommend you tracking her goals for her. I'd get the beginning wght, fat measurements, and maybe even use tape measure. This way she'll be able to see the results down the road, and remember where she was compared to the progress she's made.

This is what I would have said.. A circuit with set goals will get her strength up.. Also I know it's c.v only but interval training is good for stripping weight but if you both want to train together then circuit is the way to go.

It's good your wife wants to work out with you I would love to train with my wife but she is into the latest lose a stone in 2 weeks magic diets and walking every day :)

Im doing that but she didnt want me posting them on here lol I had her take naked before pics too so she can see the difference over time.

Has her doctor told her she's cleard to workout yet? Normally it's only 4 weeks but can definitely exceed that. If she has been cleared. I'd start off with full body 3 days a week like everyone has mentioned. An maybe one full day of core work.
 
just let her do what you do. I train with my girl and she goes through my workout with her own weights she's able to handle. slowly she'll pick up stuff then finally go workout on her own

Yes, she just got cleared last week. Looks like Im forced to have her do 3 days a week full body, shes sore as fuck today lol.

We will have to build up to that one, my routines are pretty intense. I want to get her started on her own routine so we can both focus at the gym.
 
Just a little update, doing ppl program with wife, 5 sets 10 reps. Had my wife do legs today. Her entire upper body is sore and she is loving it. Shes looking up supplements and workouts. She even got a pair of chucks for leg day (which I think is trendy and gay). Finally was able to do my thing today with only a little suervision and got a great pump.
 
I just had my wife follow along and do as I do. It took her a few months and she was sore and always complaining but it was well worth it. Now she drives me nuts about her meal preps and gym time. She's addicted.

I would have her follow me but Im on cycle right now and have to make my own gains. I took the first three days showing her what to do, if she has questions she asks, but I have to get my pump on lol. Ive been doing supersets with high volume, shit would kill her.

I know what you mean! It's sacrifice. But we'll worth it. It makes me feel good when all the guys in the gym are checking my wife out. Lol.

Yea dude and its funny because it pisses my wife off. She refuses to go to 24hr for this alone so I had to get a ymca membership for the family. Its funny watching her use her workout towel to cover her cooch all the time. Se gets hella pissed when a girl checks me out :(
