New York (CNN)Former FBI Director James Comey asked American voters Sunday night to end Donald Trump's presidency with a "landslide" victory for his opponent in 2020.
"All of us should use every breath we have to make sure the lies stop on January 20, 2021," Comey told an audience at the 92nd Street Y on New York City's Upper East Side. He all but begged Democrats to set aside their ideological differences and nominate the person best suited to defeating Trump in an election.
"I understand the Democrats have important debates now over who their candidate should be," Comey told MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, "but they have to win. They have to win."
Over the course of more than an hour, Comey repeatedly derided Trump's character, again likening the atmosphere around the President to what he saw in prosecuting mafia figures and suggested that Trump's tweets could eventually amount to witness tampering. Asked if Trump might be an unindicted co-conspirator in some of the crimes recently described by special counsel Robert Mueller, Comey said he didn't know, "but if he's not there, he's certainly close."
Still, Comey said he hoped that Trump would be swept out of office without being impeached. Framing the rise of Trumpism as a political ill the country needed to exorcise at the ballot, he expressed a hope that Americans would "in a landslide rid ourselves of this attack on our values."
"Removal by impeachment would muddy that," he said, and potentially leave a third of the country feeling like their chosen leader had been removed in a "coup."

New filings by special counsel Robert S. Mueller’s filing said President Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, was contacted in 2015 by a “Russian national” seeking “synergy” between Trump’s campaign and the Russian government. The special counsel’s team also said Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, lied about meeting with Konstantin Kilimnik, whom the U.S. government has linked to Russian intelligence.
The Mueller filings made news, of course. But how much has what we know about Trump and Russia really changed since 2016? Not as much as you might think.

Obviously, much more evidence about Russia’s interference has come out since 2016. But I’m not sure we’ve learned the bigger lesson: Why did it take two years and dozens of indictments for so many to believe that Russia was not only behind the DNC hack but may also have been in cahoots with the Trump campaign, when there was so much evidence at the time?
It’s as if something needs to be secret or hidden to truly matter. If it’s sealed in a courtroom, it must be a bombshell, but if it’s out in the open, it’s just not as serious.
Trump will not be the last of his kind. The next time so much evidence about a candidate is sitting out in plain view, let’s hope it gets a good look before Americans cast their votes.

Federal prosecutors have now accused Donald Trump, who is still president of the United States by some bad joke perpetuated by the universe, of committing two felonies.
What Trump did was direct his lawyer/fixer Michael Cohen to make illegal payments to a porn star and a playmate who were threatening his presidential campaign in 2016. Trump initially denied any knowledge of the payments to the public, as though Cohen took it upon himself out of the goodness of his heart. Later, one of Trump’s mouthpieces, Rudy Giuliani, said that Trump paid Cohen back. Then, a recording was released of Trump discussing the payments with Cohen, and how it would be operated.
A court filing by federal prosecutors in Manhattan said Cohen “acted in coordination and at the direction of” an unnamed individual, clearly referring to Donald Trump.
A separate filing by the Special Counsel investigating Russia’s involvement in the 2016 campaign said an unnamed Russian offered Cohen “government level” synergy between Russia and the Trump campaign in November 2015. While Trump argued Saturday that he didn’t want Russia’s help, fourteen people in his campaign had contact with Russia. Keep that in mind the next time you hear a Trump sycophant argue there’s no evidence of collusion.
In a separate case on Friday, the Special Counsel accused Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, of lying about his contacts with an individual they accuse of having ties to Russian intelligence, and about his interactions with Trump administration officials after he was indicted on criminal charges.
So, how did Trump interpret all of this? He tweeted, “Totally clears the President. Thank you!” That is the correct way to interpret it if he was talking about any of the 44 presidents before him (I was worried about Chester A. Arthur). As for him, no. He’s standing directly in the center of the bulls eye. Also, who the hell is he “thanking?”
As Michael Che said on Saturday Night Live, Trump can’t tweet something and magically make it true. Maybe Trump can buy some ruby slippers, click them three times, and say “there’s no place like no collusion.”
How do fourteen people communicate with Russia without colluding? How do fourteen people in the Trump campaign talk to Russians without Donald Trump ever knowing? How do Republicans ignore a president who commits felonies? Keep in mind, this is the stuff that’s NOT redacted. These two felonies are being called out by the Southern District of New York. Robert Mueller’s office haven’t released their findings yet, so we can expect even more to pile up. Finally, Trump will be able to brag about having more of something than any other president, in addition to lies, wives, and sexually-transmitted diseases.
We’ve had three presidents accused of high crimes. Two were impeached and the third resigned in disgrace. Are we going to ignore the fourth? I think the House will impeach Trump, and the Senate, needing just 20 Republicans to do the right thing, will protect Trump. There are not 20 Republicans in the Senate who will put their nation before their party or a stupid cult of personality.
The American president operated his campaign with assistance by a hostile foreign power. This is as close to treason as one can get without being at war. Donald Trump is a traitor. The presidency should not be occupied by a traitor.
