Trump Timeline ... Trumpocalypse

WASHINGTON — Justice Department officials intend to interview senior C.I.A. officers as they review the Russia investigation, according to people briefed on the matter, indicating they are focused partly on the intelligence agencies’ most explosive conclusion about the 2016 election: that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia intervened to benefit Donald J. Trump.

The interview plans are the latest sign the Justice Department will take a critical look at the C.I.A.’s work on Russia’s election interference. Investigators want to talk with at least one senior counterintelligence official and a senior C.I.A. analyst, the people said. Both officials were involved in the agency’s work on understanding the Russian campaign to sabotage the election in 2016.

While the Justice Department review is not a criminal inquiry, it has provoked anxiety in the ranks of the C.I.A., according to former officials. Senior agency officials have questioned why the C.I.A.’s analytical work should be subjected to a federal prosecutor’s scrutiny. Attorney General William P. Barr, who is overseeing the review, assigned the United States attorney in Connecticut, John H. Durham, to conduct it.

One day soon, we could wake up to find our nation mired in a war even more disastrous than the Iraq invasion of 2003. If the United States attacks Iran, it will be for one reason: President Trump desperately wants a war.

He has intensified his threats against Iran. He’s moved warships to the region and raised the specter of deploying up to 120,000 troops. These belligerent actions should alarm all Americans.

The United States has no reason to attack Iran. Our disagreements can be handled diplomatically. President Obama and our European allies forced Iran to sign a deal that required a downscaling of its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of harsh economic sanctions.

Trump pulled out of that agreement and has provoked conflict. Most Americans don’t know much about Iran or the tensions between our countries. Russia and Saudi Arabia have done more to harm our national interests. Yet Trump wants to make Iran a central issue in American politics, even though Iran’s leaders have complied with the agreement and don’t want a fight.

Why is Trump pushing confrontation? It’s likely because he views war as key to his re-election in 2020. If he succeeds in starting one, it will be the most dangerous power grab in American history.

The thin strand of legitimacy by which Trump's presidency hangs requires that he defend criminal activity that is a profound, direct threat to American national security. His main job as president has become to say colluding with a foreign enemy is a perfectly OK thing to do..

The careers of his aides and his Congressional allies depend on them supporting this dangerous thesis and defending the president. The result has been a collapse of the oversight and systems of justice that would otherwise defend us.

This underscores that what the Russians did with the active assistance of Trump was not "meddling in an election." It was the active destruction of U.S. institutions, values and standing and the weakening of our defenses to enable them to attack at will in the future.

The president said this on national television. It follows on the heels of his WH arguing that only the executive branch can judge the president...in other words, only the president can judge himself...effectively putting him above the law.

Another attack on our Constitution. Another attack on our values. And once again in broad daylight. This DOES NOT require a Congressional investigation. It just happened. Before the eyes of each and every one of us.

Further the president and his team are demonstrating that each every day they are in office, each and every day they are not stopped, each and every day there is are no consequences for their attacks on our laws...they will continue to do damage.

Is what Trump and his team are doing outrageous? Yes! But the inaction of the Congress in the face of these on-going, visible, stunning violations is just as outrageous! There is no excuse. There is no reason to wait. The alarms are sounding. The risk is extraordinarily high.

Should Congress add counts to its articles of impeachment that pertain to obstruction of justice, campaign finance violations, serial lying to the people, violation of human rights at the border, etc.? Yes. But let that happen in due course. Some, decisive action is required now.

Right now. Or those who fail to act will be as complicit as the president, his foreign enemy associates, his aides, and his Congressional enablers.
