Who will show up? Who will pay? The many unknowns of the GOP convention.

Dozens of well-known Republicans aren’t showing up. There’s no word yet on who will speak. A growing number of corporate sponsors are taking a pass. Groups of white supremacists and other agitators are on the way, while the official protest routes are frantically being redrawn after being thrown out in court. And then there’s the fight to dethrone the big star.

With less than three weeks to go, Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland is poised to be the most chaotic GOP gathering of the modern era.

Aziz Ansari: Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/26/o...-why-trump-makes-me-scared-for-my-family.html

“DON’T go anywhere near a mosque,” I told my mother. “Do all your prayer at home. O.K.?”

“We’re not going,” she replied.

I am the son of Muslim immigrants. As I sent that text, in the aftermath of the horrible attack in Orlando, Fla., I realized how awful it was to tell an American citizen to be careful about how she worshiped.

Being Muslim American already carries a decent amount of baggage. In our culture, when people think “Muslim,” the picture in their heads is not usually of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or the kid who left the boy band One Direction. It’s of a scary terrorist character from “Homeland” or some monster from the news.

Today, with the presidential candidate Donald J. Trump and others like him spewing hate speech, prejudice is reaching new levels. It’s visceral, and scary, and it affects how people live, work and pray. It makes me afraid for my family. It also makes no sense.

There are approximately 3.3 million Muslim Americans. After the attack in Orlando, The Times reported that the F.B.I. is investigating 1,000 potential “homegrown violent extremists,” a majority of whom are most likely connected in some way to the Islamic State. If everyone on that list is Muslim American, that is 0.03 percent of the Muslim American population. If you round that number, it is 0 percent. The overwhelming number of Muslim Americans have as much in common with that monster in Orlando as any white person has with any of the white terrorists who shoot up movie theaters or schools or abortion clinics.

I asked a young friend of mine, a woman in her 20s of Muslim heritage, how she had been feeling after the attack. “I just feel really bad, like people think I have more in common with that idiot psychopath than I do the innocent people being killed,” she said. “I’m really sick of having to explain that I’m not a terrorist every time the shooter is brown.”

I myself am not a religious person, but after these attacks, anyone that even looks like they might be Muslim understands the feelings my friend described. There is a strange feeling that you must almost prove yourself worthy of feeling sad and scared like everyone else.

I understand that as far as these problems go, I have it better than most because of my recognizability as an actor. When someone on the street gives me a strange look, it’s usually because they want to take a selfie with me, not that they think I’m a terrorist.

But I remember how those encounters can feel. A few months after the attacks of Sept. 11, I remember walking home from class near N.Y.U., where I was a student. I was crossing the street and a man swore at me from his car window and yelled: “Terrorist!” To be fair, I may have been too quick to cross the street as the light changed, but I’m not sure that warranted being compared to the perpetrators of one of the most awful incidents in human history.

The vitriolic and hate-filled rhetoric coming from Mr. Trump isn’t so far off from cursing at strangers from a car window. He has said that people in the American Muslim community “know who the bad ones are,” implying that millions of innocent people are somehow complicit in awful attacks. Not only is this wrongheaded; but it also does nothing to address the real problems posed by terrorist attacks. By Mr. Trump’s logic, after the huge financial crisis of 2007-08, the best way to protect the American economy would have been to ban white males.

According to reporting by Mother Jones, since 9/11, there have been 49 mass shootings in this country, and more than half of those were perpetrated by white males. I doubt we’ll hear Mr. Trump make a speech asking his fellow white males to tell authorities “who the bad ones are,” or call for restricting white males’ freedoms.

One way to decrease the risk of terrorism is clear: Keep military-grade weaponry out of the hands of mentally unstable people, those with a history of violence, and those on F.B.I. watch lists. But, despite sit-ins and filibusters, our lawmakers are failing us on this front and choose instead to side with the National Rifle Association. Suspected terrorists can buy assault rifles, but we’re still carrying tiny bottles of shampoo to the airport. If we’re going to use the “they’ll just find another way” argument, let’s use that to let us keep our shoes on.

Xenophobic rhetoric was central to Mr. Trump’s campaign long before the attack in Orlando. This is a guy who kicked https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/06/16/full-text-donald-trump-announces-a-presidential-bid/ (off his presidential run) by calling Mexicans “rapists” who were “bringing drugs” to this country. Numerous times, he has https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/11/22/donald-trumps-outrageous-claim-that-thousands-of-new-jersey-muslims-celebrated-the-911-attacks/ (said that) Muslims in New Jersey were cheering in the streets on Sept. 11, 2001. This has been continually disproved, but he stands by it. I don’t know what every Muslim American was doing that day, but I can tell you what my family was doing. I was studying at N.Y.U., and I lived near the World Trade Center. When the second plane hit, I was on the phone with my mother, who called to tell me to leave my dorm building.

The haunting sound of the second plane hitting the towers is forever ingrained in my head. My building was close enough that it shook upon impact. I was scared for my life as my fellow students and I trekked the panicked streets of Manhattan. My family, unable to reach me on my cellphone, was terrified about my safety as they watched the towers collapse. There was absolutely no cheering. Only sadness, horror and fear.

Mr. Trump, in response to the attack in Orlando, began a tweet with these words: “Appreciate the congrats.” It appears that day he was the one who was celebrating after an attack.

Caution, racist content. Leftists prepare your safe spaces..

David Cole sure has come along way since his neocon days.

I have to admit, I’ve never minded being the only Jew in a room full of anti-Semites. To be surrounded by people who sincerely believe you have preternatural inborn powers and abilities is actually quite the ego boost. When dealing with the segment of the alt-right that isn’t terribly fond of folks of the Jewish persuasion, I take absolutely no offense at any barbs thrown my way. Frankly, I can’t understand why that sawed-off pip-squeak egotist Ben Shapiro doesn’t join me. He was always the type to pick and choose his friends for maximum ego-stroking. He ought to migrate to the alt-right; you’ve never been verbally fellated until you’ve been accused of being an evil, all-powerful, world-controlling demigod.

Hell, the alt-right won’t even let me cop to mistakes. When I tell some of my “fans” that, as a neocon, I supported the invasion of Iraq under a very mistaken belief that the outcome would be much better than it was, I’m always told, “Save them lies for the sheeple. You know damn well you Jews planned this whole thing—ISIS, anarchy, the refugee crisis, all so’s you can flood the West with mud people and build your damn ‘Greater Israel.’ Jews don’t make mistakes; they always know what they’re doing.”

Well, you got me there, crackerbarrel. Can’t put anything past you. We Jews are way too smart to ever make a clumsy misjudgment of such massive significance.

Just as I find myself unbothered by the anti-Jewish elements on the alt-right, I also have no problem with the more traditionally conservative Trump supporters who seem to not only embrace the “low-information voter” designation, but don’t even consider it a slur. You know the type; they always start out every statement of praise for their candidate by declaring, “I may not be some highfalutin intellectual” or “I may not have no fancy education” or “I may just be simple country folk,” only to lead into their explanation of why their gut tells ’em that Trump is the right man for the job.

That kind of “I’m plain as dirt but I knows what I believe” voter doesn’t phase me one bit, because they’re not trying to masquerade as something they aren’t. Plus, inherent in their shtick is a de facto admission that I’m smarter, at least book-smarter, than they are. So, again, the ego-boost thing.

Sadly, the one type of American voter who grates on me like a nursery full of shrieking, colicky newborns is the infernal species I’m doomed to live among here in L.A.—the leftist hipster. Leftist hipsters have neither the Trumpkins’ aw-shucks humility nor the anti-Semites’ worshipful admission of the Jews’ place as overlords in the human pecking order. Leftist hipsters are defined by their smugness, their pseudo-certainty, and their unyielding belief that their views are based on science and rationalism, whereas everyone else’s are based on ignorance, superstition, and fear.

There is nothing that is not foul about leftist hipsters. They traffic in the very fear, ignorance, and superstition that they accuse others of employing. Leftist hipsters will be the first ones to accuse conservatives of being “racist,” yet almost every political move the leftist hipster makes is in some way rooted in a pathological hatred of white people, a hatred that leftist hipsters—most of whom are themselves white—view as the ultimate self-critical virtue-signaling: “Look how evolved, enlightened, and noble I am—I’m willing to hate my own skin color.”

The night of the Brexit vote, I had a leftist hipster patiently explain to me that my fears about Muslims “invading” Europe through mass immigration are ignorant and unfounded, because the real threat is that now, with the U.K. severed from the E.U., England will most certainly reconquer India and reestablish Rhodesia. The leftist hipster in question, a New York avant-garde “artist” of some small acclaim, said this with a completely straight face, a face that reflected her absolute metaphysical certitude that whereas fears of Muslim immigrant rapists and jihadists are completely rooted in fantasy, the fear of England retaking India is thoroughly grounded in science and rationalism.

I’ve been consistently amused over the past few weeks at the sight of leftist hipsters trying like hell to sell themselves on Hillary Clinton. The average leftist hipster was a Sanders supporter, because of course we all know that socialism works perfectly—it’s been scientifically proven by professors in Ivy League classrooms—and reports of the collapse of Venezuelan society under the weight of Hugo Chavez’s socialist policies are nothing more than lies cooked up by “Pox News” or “Faux News” or what have you. Only the superstitious and irrational see food lines in Caracas; the “IFL science” freethinkers see the reality—well-fed noble brown people riding solar-powered unicorns to markets overstocked with fair-trade soy burgers and free-range tofu drumsticks.

But sadly, as deluded as leftist hipsters are, they can still read the writing on the PBR can. Sanders is on his way out, and with Trump on track for the GOP nod, it’s going to be Hillary versus “like, literally Hitler.” So of course the hipster crowd needs to find a way to support a warmongering drone-loving Wall Street-backed unremittingly corrupt rapist-defending Democrat.

Oh, sure, they could support her purely as the anti-Trump, a reluctant vote in the name of saving the world from (did I mention like, literally?) Hitler. But leftist hipsters could never be satisfied with that, because their psychological stability depends on maintaining the illusion that everything they do is grounded in rational progressivism and noble intentions, and voting for one bad person merely to defeat another bad person doesn’t offer the kind of reinforcement of intellectual superiority that, say, hating on one’s own skin color does.

No, an actual reason to support Hillary is needed. Needless to say, that’s a tall order, considering that she has been condemned as a poor candidate by both Comrade Sanders and virtuous black man Obama (back in ’08). But nothing is impossible for the plucky demographic that gave the world Pomplamoose. The same night that I was informed of Britain’s plan to reanimate the Raj, I was involved in a fascinating online discussion with Mark Ebner and his friends. For those who may not know, Ebner is an accomplished, best-selling investigative journalist and TV host who specializes in celebrity scandals. His exposés of Scientology have garnered international acclaim, and he was one of the first journalists to break the story of Bill Cosby’s alleged sexual improprieties.

And he hates Trump. Quite passionately.

Ebner, who resides in L.A., has a lot of hipster friends (as do I, so I can’t really hold that against him), and the night of the Brexit vote, they were engaged in a vibrant debate regarding how best to engender the kind of “passion” for Hillary that could motivate disillusioned Sanders supporters to go all-in for Betty Benghazi. Again and again, the contributors to the thread kept striking out in their search for the magic hook upon which leftist hipsters could hang their support for the crooked corporate harpy.

But never forget the infinite monkey theorem. After a number of false starts, true-crime writer and prominent celebrity ghostwriter Gil Reavill hit the nail on the head: Support for Hillary must be promoted in the name of “the reproductive rights of the women you know and love.”

As Hans Landa would say, that is a bingo! Ebner himself thumbed-up the concept. It’s gotta be all about abortion. While the ignorant, superstitious, racist, (air quotes) God-fearing conservatives fearmonger about unimportant things like Hillary’s corruption and untrustworthiness, rational progressive hipsters need to understand what really matters in this election—the fact that women are about to lose the right to have doctors tear the living shit out of the fetus-shaped tumors that somehow randomly sometimes start growing inside of them like an unwanted violinist.

The right to an abortion is about to be lost. Like, literally. Forget the misogynistic questions about Hillary’s lack of judgment, forget the fantasists who ridiculously claim that she somehow had a hand in creating the clusterfuck that is Libya based solely on the fact that she did. Leftist hipsters are there to help you separate the (air quotes) wheat from the (air quotes) chaff. Hillary is a good candidate based on the rational, scientific argument that the days of filthy back-alley abortions are about to return. Let the Rush Dumbos and the Sean Insannitys focus on stupid things like her history of lying and big-money toadying. “We” know the truth: It’s Clinton or the coat hanger.

Except no, it isn’t. True to form, leftists are once again engaging in exactly the type of behavior they accuse others of trafficking in. In this case, using scare tactics about a chimerical menace. Any actual threat to abortion rights is so far off, it’s silly for either side to make it an issue in 2016. Currently, there’s a 6/2 Supreme Court split in favor of Roe as settled law. That would have to shift dramatically to a 4/5 split against Roe, and at the speed the court moves that’s decades away, barring some outbreak of botulism at the SCOTUS July 4th picnic. Plus, as four of the last seven justices sent to the bench by a GOP president ended up affirming Roe (by deed in the case of O’Connor, Souter, and Kennedy, and by word in the case of Roberts), there’s no guarantee that a justice nominated by a GOP president will even be anti-Roe. So to get to that necessary 4/5 split against Roe could take thirty years, if it ever happens at all.

And even if Roe is overturned, that only throws things back to the states, one-third of which already have abortion rights enshrined in their state constitutions (and that number would surely increase if there were any clear and present danger of SCOTUS overturning Roe). Yes, there are a few states where abortion services are difficult to find, but those matters are not determined by a president and cannot be remedied by one. There were practically no clinics in Wyoming when Obama entered office, and nothing has changed in eight years, despite his staunch pro-choiceyness. And, as the recent SCOTUS decision regarding clinic regulations in Texas demonstrated, as long as Roe is the law, so is the standard of “undue burden.” Anyone who tries to argue that this election should be decided based on abortion is engaging in deflection and scare tactics. We might as well have the candidates debate what our colonies on Mars should look like, because the odds are we’ll land a man on Mars (like, literally) before American women lose the right to have an abortion.

I’ve made this argument to my GOP friends for years in an attempt to get them to stop self-immolating over the incredibly unpopular and moot “no rape exception” thing.

In the end, Ebner conceded, “I agree that reproductive rights should not be a lead campaign issue,” adding, “let me go on record saying that I’m all for a woman’s right to snuff her unborn children. Hell—all my children (to date) have wound up in dumpsters behind Planned Parenthood, so I’m happy that fetal tissue can find a clean and proper disposal system.”

For some, the Family Guy musical number “Prom Night Dumpster Baby” is nothing more than a catchy, bad-taste skit. To Mark Ebner, it’s an ode to the joy of fatherhood.

My good friend Ted Plank, a motion-picture music coordinator who has always prowled the alt-right periphery of the Hollywood conservative set, responded to Ebner with his own unique observation: “There are piles of nonreligious Republican limited government types who are in a constant state of ecstasy that liberals kill off millions of future Democrats every year. Five times as many black fetuses are aborted as white fetuses. Twice as many Latino fetuses are aborted as white fetuses. These Republicans are just fucking with you, pretending they hate abortion, while walking away with tears rolling down their cheeks. Tears of laughter, that you’re dumb enough to fall for it.”

Ted articulated quite well the problem that leftists will have if they try to make this election about abortion: Trump’s base is not really all that pro-life. The die-hard pro-lifers wanted Cruz or Rubio. If they end up grudgingly supporting Trump, it won’t be because they see him as the John Brown of fetal liberation. Margaret Sanger’s beloved eugenicism courses freely through alt-rightists, who are just a tad more willing than leftists to be specific about the identity of the “human weeds” Sanger advocated exterminating (Sanger used the term in a general sense, not in reference to any one particular race or ethnicity, and yes, every pro-life Facebook meme you’ve seen stating otherwise is https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/08/18/carsons-claim-that-planned-parenthood-targets-blacks-to-control-that-population/ (incorrect)). The fact is, a large segment of Trump’s base would probably read Ebner’s pro-abortion comments and, assuming from his name that he’s Jewish, react by saying, “Damn right, that’s why we need abortion—for Jew babies to end up in dumpsters.”

Hillary supporters, whether of the fanatical or the reluctant kind, should think twice before trying to make this election about abortion. They may just find out, much to their horror, that they have more in common with Trump alt-rightists than they’d like to believe. They might just discover that the dreaded Trumpkins are on the exact same side of the issue, if for slightly different reasons.

And that would be a bitter abortion pill to swallow. Like, literally.
