Who listens to Rap Here??

I think what Bob and Hogg are getting at, is that the subject matter in rap reflects the very activity that keeps poor urbanites (not just black) repressed. And why encourage that... Of course I'm not speaking on their behalf but that's what I'm gathering from their posts. I agree 100% but it does amp me up in the gym. :D

If you guys want to hear some intelligent sounding stuff from a rapper with above average intelligence, might i suggest old Tribe Called Quest. If you've never heard of him you'll probably chuckle just by hearing his name, but Q Tip is a very positive dude.

good post boss, Finally someone sheds some light on the subject instead of saying the all intelligent "rap sucks". To dislike the music is fine and a matter of taste, but to say that the only purpose of the music is to glorify illiteracy throughout urban and underprivileged areas is just innacurate. I respect everyone's opinion here and I think I take exception to this discussion because, I myself am in the industry, but there is a great deal more out there than what you might hear on the radio or see on TV.

To crewboss: You might not have heard of these artist I am going to mention, but if you like Tribe, these mc's are closely related and highly intelligent. You might want to check out, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, they both have solo albums and a group album called Blackstar. Also, common, Black thought of the Roots, and canibus are all extremely atriculate Mc's. Wisdom

people can listen to what they want to listen to and that's cool. the only thing i take issue with is calling rap 'music'. it's not music. it's a beat with some loops, sampled (some might say stolen, but hey if you're paying a royalty for it, that's good enough for me...) from a musician who wrote them, and some brother talking over it. rappers rap because they cannot play or sing or write music. i'll allow that there is the occasional exception who is musically literate but, again, that's the exception.

Chip, I actually agree with you on this for the most part, as I myself do not play any instruments and have great respect for those that do. On the other hand it seems that you are saying that it does not take talent, and anyone can rap. I think the "music" has gotten a bad rep on how it has been watered down and commecialized in it's present form. I extremely dislike the state of the hip hop industry as it stands now. But, I challenge anybody on this board to listen to any song I have done, and listen to the structure of rhyme and complexity of wordplay and tell me that this does not show talent or that anybody can do this. If you can prove this to me I will quit now and just agree with the masses who say "rap is crap". Wisdom

wisdom, i do put down rap in general but i also acknowledge that there are some artists who are worthy. tribe called quest is an example, as is public enemy, 3rd bass and digital underground is another; i'm surprised noone mentioned them. anyway, i do think that it does takes some talent to put ideas together in a verbal fashion that flows and is aurally appealing and, certainly, not everyone is capable of delivering such a product. but what i think most of us are getting at, and you seem to agree, is that the 'commercial' rap scene has been 'molded' into a state that we find abhorrent.

you seem to be a very cool bro, intelligent and well-spoken. in all fairness, i tried to listen to your music here at work but have not been able to due to a variety of 'software errors'. i will listen to it at home and give you my honest opinion, for what it's worth.

I always like Public Enemy. Exactly like you're saying, Chip, I said, HOLY SHIT! A rap group talking about politcal issues. Where's the references to the cronic, hoes, bling bling and killing whitey?
