I'm not active enough here to have much a say on this but do find these discussions interesting re status issues.
IMO, there is no perfect system. I'm active on a few boards and none of them have really "good" ways of distinguishing knowledgeable members from others despite different approaches to the problem.
Yes, classifying everyone under the same banner suggests they are all of equal value (this is false) BUT...at the same time, it actually forces members to focus on the quality of the post, rather than the likes/years/status of the person making the post. This is a good thing. I've had guys dismiss/agree with my posts purely because of my status on a board - both are stupid approaches to evaluating information.
I would suggest allowing all members to be able to search through previous posts/threads made by others. This is currently limited once you restrict access to who can view your profile and, frankly, I don't really know why.
It's an easy way of researching members, finding out if they can be trusted, if they have valuable information to share and so on. Bring that back and then you have a game changer - everyone might have the same "status" but the post history would quickly highlight the truly valuable members.
