I hear you
YeahIt was a different world back then. Unfortunately for those of us who liked wrestling "back in the day", the internet definitely negatively impacted the business by revealing way too much, and telling us everything that would happen, before it did.
Not that we didn't know that it was a work, but there was interest in seeing the stories play out, without knowing what would happen.
Also, wrestling has itself to blame for taking everything to extremes, to the point where nothing is impressive now.
Kind of hard to care about a villain destroying his opponent with weapons after the match, when it happens 3 or 4 times every show.
Kind of hard to be impressed by a guy doing a crazy triple flip off the top ropes, when it has been done 3 or 4 times already on the same show.
Sigh... it is what it is...
Yeah
Alot of things got worked over back then that wouldnt fly now. I dunno...maybe the day and age were in? Maybe the characters that sold it? Maybe the newness has wore off. But Randy Savage and Elizabeth's story line of undying love wouldnt play out now days. Neither would Hogan and his ultra patriotic over the top charisma. I think all of it plays in to the equation. Also jacked up dudes has become more common. But back in the 80s it was more rare which is a big part of the attraction to wrestlers. The size, the freakish physiques like Andre, Big Show, Warrior and many others puts asses in seats and viewers tuned in. That was specifically why i liked the Warrior so much when i was a kid. It was his physique and energy. No one looked like him back then lol. I think we all became desensitized to it. Seeing a big charismatic dude flex his 24" pythons and tear his shirt in the center of the ring to thousands of camera snaps has had its day. So idk...maybe its just the originality. Many greats have come since the golden age. The Rock, Stone Cold, Mankind. Pretty original characters. So i guess all isnt lost. Just need a fresh act to bring us back in.
For what its worth i did like Enzo and Big Cass. They were pretty exciting. But ill always remember the golden era of wrestling with rose colored glasses. They were a huge part of my childhood and motivation as a kid. I wish some thing could make me feel that way again.
Damn, damn good post Trukk, and great points. I love the point that you made about being motivated. I tell people all the time - when they ask why I started lifting weights at such a young age - that the pro wrestlers I watched as a little kid made me want to start lifting weights!
