another shoulder injury

Don’t know exactly what happened. I do a max lift check about every three weeks on bench. I was expecting at least 2 reps at 295, since I’ve already done that twice before. I was really hoping to get a single out of 315 for the first time. But for some reason I failed on the first rep at 275.

Wasn’t expecting to fail, so I had no spotter, just the rack and the pins. When I rolled the bar off my chest onto the pins I got a dull pain in my shoulder and triceps – the same damned shoulder that just recovered from labrum surgery. There was no question I injured it, so I just cleaned the bar and went home. I still have no idea what I did to hurt it, or WTF happened to my strength on that set.

After two days it still hurts A LOT. I have trouble raising my arm over my head. I know I need to go see the doc, but she’s going to give me shit for ruining her good work. Another MRI and probably another 6 months recovery after surgery. It’s back to just doing legs and a few accessories. Damn I’m bummed about this. I don’t suppose there’s anyway to work back and chest without straining the shoulders and tris, weighted nipple raises or something...

Damn that sucks. Been fighting shoulder issues all along, and when I have to take off from straining shoulders it crushes my motivation and just pisses me off. Wish you luck, and hope it's not as bad as you think.

Any bruising in the shoulder area? That would be a telltale sign of a complete or near complete tear

So are you sure you re- tore it ? Im assuming you already have done anti inflammatory, ice and maybe tiger balm massage. Then in the gym do the same exercises they had you do in rehab? When your able of course.
This has always been my go to " therapy" whenever I injured or reinjured a surgically repaired shoulder or banged up biceps tendon. But if its retorn that really sucks!!
If so i guess u go with the weighted nipple raises [emoji4][emoji4]

A good idea is to go to another doc if your main doc will give you so much shit for ruining her fine work.

There's no discoloration, but the triceps tendon/muscle is sore near the top and again under the arm.

No, not all that sure. I did ice it and take anti inflammations - actually needed a couple of Demerol to sleep the first night. Also started bpc-157, since that has helped other injuries.

I started the most basic rehab movements - raising and lowering the arm, doing small rotations, etc. Might be a few days before I can do more than that.

Hopefully its just strained. If you felt a pop or snap then it is a distinct possibility the tendon let go. Best to get it checked out asap.

There's always a chance it will get better without surgery, id give it at least a week to see how it feels and go from there.
Good luck brother i wish you a speedy recovery!!

Oh man, that gave me shivers just reading it. I'm already missing the long head of the biceps tendon. I'm pretty sure it didn't let go, though.

Still go get it checked for your peace of mind. In the meantime back off the heavy lifts for now.

I might try my regular doc and see what he says. I probably won't go near the gym for at least a week. Well, maybe for the leg press, but not much else.

Set backs truly suck!!! Hopefully it's just a strain and not a tear....

I'm not knocking you at all flesher, but I've never understood why people do max lifts....unless your a competing powerlifter. Max reps does absolutely nothing for building muscle...it just causes uncalled for injuries.

Keep ice on it and I'd def go get it seen about if it doesn't get somewhat better within a week.

Damn Flenser that sucks. Maybe it is time to put those plates down. We are to old to be putting in new highs. Man I am really hoping for a strain here buddy.

I had 18 months of almost no chest work due to the first shoulder injury. I was just trying to catch up! It does sound pretty stupid post injury, though : ) I can't even claim I didn't know it was risky, since I had already hurt myself once before.

@rutman you are probably right about max lifts. I always "felt" I was getting something from them, but it could have more to do with ego than strength.

Ego can lead to injury don't forget, and if you are 50 or over like I am maybe it's time to lower the sights a bit as older muscles aren't as sturdy as when you were younger.

NO!! Fuck, after all the shit you just went through?! I really hope it's just a strain.. Sorry flenser, good luck man..

I got a little range of motion back this morning. I could at least reach my fucking turn signals on the way to work!

I really like the idea it could be just a strain, but I think I most likely tore the labrum again. Now that most of the swelling is gone the motions that hurt are in the exact same directions as before. I think I'm going to just go see my doc and let her yell at me.

I'm wondering if one of the tears she cleaned up just didn't fully heal. I know I was lifting heavy, but I didn't get injured during the lift. Nothing hurt until I rolled the bar off my chest, and that didn't take a lot of effort. I think the bar would still have rolled off my chest if I had just let go - which I probably should have done.

You guys are right about me being too old to lift heavy anymore. I should have figured that out on my own the last... 3 times I tweaked my back doing dead lifts, or the second time I strained my lat doing heavy rows (that one still hurts). I can't even describe how bad my arthritic neck aches after heavy squats.

The thing is I still have a lot of... motivation to get stronger. I don't think I've really learned my lesson yet. I really pushed hard to get a 520 squat on my 52nd birthday, for example. Missed it by 45lbs, but I did unrack that sucker just to get a feel for it. I can say I'm going to back off, but I know when I get to the gym I'm not going to think about the risk of injury as much as the "need" to lift more.

I can at least skip the max lifts. @rutman is right. It does nothing for building muscle. Maybe I can set a minimum rep count to, say, four. Something like that : )
