At my gym we have a smith machine but no squat rack. I don't know why.
Should I do no squats at all instead of using the smith machine?
Best advice, find a new gym. Serious.

If you're doing a low bar squat then you'll probably benefit less than with a flat soled shoe like chucks or Adidas' new flat soled lifting shoe.
If you do high bar or front squats you'll see much more benefit out of Oly shoes.
For OHP I find Oly shoes help me maintain better balance from front to back.
I deadlift in socks. I'm not a fan of the heel for deadlifts but some don't mind it and can pull PRs in them.

THIS!No squat rack??
Never go back to that place. Ever.
Thank you because this is never a point that is brought up. Really they give a false sense of security those machines.Smith machine does not allow your back to follow it's natural path- very bad for your spine. In the smith machine you are also robbing yourself of all the stabilizing exercise you get from having to actually balance the weight. Smith squats are just bad for you.
Yeah all the ones at the powerhouse i use to go to where too. Rust old machines where the best. Those old nautilus machinesThere's another gym in town but all the weights are chipped and some of the dumbbells are bent.
Weight is not as significant as you might think. Try 70% of your max weight. Time under tension or negatives same shit. You will see you form improve and your body change quick. A few guys outlift me and i dont care. The momentum is doing most of the lift for them. Extend all the way up stop. Go down slowly. Take you time and focus. Muscle mind connection. Try it you will see the differenceI like the gym in at now. All new equipment but no squat rack sucks ass also I feel like everyone is weak because I can out lift just about anyone in there even the guys bigger than me, but maybe one or two people. There's a guy that's 18 that just graduated high school that benches 445 I think now for sure 425. He benches more than he squats though.
I for sure beat everyone doing squats. I can do 400-415, It's on the smith machine though. Feel like it makes the weights lighter.

What about using 3/4 boxing shoes? They're also flat and hard flat sole. Like ringside
If you tried to squat even 385 in a real rack, the weight would likely crush you. I doubt you'd even want to attempt the squat. There's just no comparison to doing free squats.

Thanks but, i heard how expensive they are. Im guessing I'll use what i have.thanks againDon't know anything about boxing shoes but anything with a non-compressible heel and solid support will work ok. I like Oly shoes bc of the heel also but not everyone needs a heel. The metatarsal strap is also a great feature.
Hahahs true but at 70% your max it will put significant strain on any body part you trainWeight is the most significant factor when it comes to lifting for all goals. Time under tension won't do anything for you if you're using the bar alone.

No its great thatyou pointed it out. So no one misunderstands what im saying. But 70% of your max is a factor of weight on the barLol. I know what you're saying and I guess I'm being a dick haha
