And if they knew, should they faces the same fines and penalties as the CEO (who presumably knew as well)? No, your salesman shouldn't face the same fines and penalties as the manufacturer unless they knowingly sold you a faulty car.

It's still unfortunate. It's unlikely he could afford a decent attorney if he and his wife were really in desperate financial straits. They were only making $2000 per week as sole source of income. That doesn't go far for a rainy day fund for legal expenses. I don't think justice system should penalize the poor/stupid and reward the wealthy/smart.

Is there any circumstance where low-level employees should face same penalties as CEO when fraud orchestrated from the top?Did the CEO pressure his employees into strong arm sales tactics knowing he was selling faulty cars or was he just casually aware?

When the fraud results in death and the employees are complicit, yes.Is there any circumstance where low-level employees should face same penalties as CEO when fraud orchestrated from the top?
This should also be a warning to the lone wolf sources around here (you know who you are) to be much more discreet. The long arm of the law reaches far.....
As well as a warning to the customers using the lone wolf sources.
With a few aggravating factors I'm sure I can come up with some examples yes.
I gotta say I'm surprised anyone would hold low-level employees equally responsible for, or at least deserving of the same penalties, as the executives who orchestrated the crime. Oh well. When the fraud results in death and the employees are complicit, yes.

What do you think about the inequity in criminal defense. The low-level employee gets a public defender while executives get entire team of $1000/hour attorneys to defend them against same charges. Ok too?
Speaking of the GM executives, they escaped prosecution thanks to GM deal with feds.
