I do this when i rack pull and dead liftOut of the shadows...
With back thickness areas such as traps, rhoms etc, try this... a scapula retraction. Arms all the way forward pull the shoulders back keeping arms straight, then drive elbows back trying to touch elbows together. If you question its effectiveness do it right now standing up.
