An insulin index of foods

You're welcome!

Thats way too much fish oil and you were getting a fat (PUFA) that you want to limit on this diet to something around 4% or less of your total calories.

This diet is NOT like any other diet! In this diet FAT is your best friend and by FAT I mean SATURATED and MONOUNSATURATED. You have to IGNORE the conventional dietary advice ("backed up" by total horseshit science) that made saturated fat the bad guy for the last 40 years. Forget about chicken breast or if you're going to eat them, cook them in bacon drippings. If you eat fish, cook it in butter. Use butter (hot or room temp) and olive oil (room temp) every chance you get. Eat adequate protein, HIGH fat, and LOW carb. Bernstein recommends 6 (breakfast) + 12 (lunch) + 12 (dinner) for a daily total of 30 gm carbs and thats a good target. Start at something like 75 gm/day and work down. You do not need to be in ketosis for this to work and at an average of 40 to 60 gm carbs per day, you wont be. At 30, you should be just above it with all the advantages and none of the issues. YMMV. Once you do this for a whiile, you'll have a better feel for what a good daily level is to maintain your health.

The reason I asked is because if you eat this way and your TRIGS drop below 100 (mine are 62),without any drugs that can alter the reading, then its a clear sign you're doing this right.

Excellent! I'll give you all the help you need.

LW -

Do you drink whole milk or 2%? Do you eat any nuts? I can do this, I just need some sort of snack.

I dont drink whole milk because of the sugar content. I dont drink 2% because....

I want FAT!

I drink full cream (i.e., heavy cream) in coffee and tea.

I eat nuts- mostly almonds - but I watch intake closely. It's easy to overeat and they can have lots of carbs.

For snacks, I'll have sliced roast beef and some cheddar cheese; hard boiled eggs with salsa or cream cheese; dill pickles; olives (cheap, canned), leftovers, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries.

SO...let's simplify this. I just ordered Taubes' new book btw, so I should get some good stuff from there. I obviously understand the concepts, I just don't know where ot draw the line. I tried zero carbs. Doesn't work. I can't do it long term.

I can do LOW carb. The question is - how low?

How many grams of sugar should I eat a day? How many grams of carbs? I was thinking if I keep it under 30 g of carbs a day and try to keep sugar less than 5 that would be a good start. What do you think?

At my house the goal is zero sugar and starch. As to complex carbs; I dont even count em. Fresh vegs, legumes, rye grain, oats, barley ,fruit: all the same in my book. I can see why some would want to break it down to percentages but I eat some fat with everything, adding oliveor coconut if the ratio is low,as in oats, for instance.
Thw wife snacks the hell out of almonds.

I have tried what you are suggesting and I don't ever freaking lose my gut. I have a large fat pad around my midsection that has never gone away since I got it around age 10. It's waxed and waned but is always there.

I'm also wondering if I really cut back on carbs I will reduce some of the inflammation wreaking havoc on my tendons/joints.

Start off with a daily total carb intake (everything that's carbohydrate, without distinction between sugar and, say, wheat or green beans) of about 75 gm and reduce it from there on a steady basis and see how it goes. You do NOT need to be at zero carb for this to work. Strictly speaking, Paleo doesnt involve counting anything - including carbs - you just eat real food. Counting carbs gives you a more quantitative feel for what you're doing and once you've done it for a while, you wont need to count so much.

[1] STOP eating wheat and ALL grains. None. Zero. This is not zero carb, it's zero grains. I do it too. Same goes for sugar/HFCS and vegetable oils.

[2] Start eating more fat as a percentage of your total calories. Eat until you feel full and then stop. Dont overeat.

[3] It sounds like you need to follow the same advice I'm giving GirlyMan.

So, zero sugar, zero grain, but some carbs are ok.

What about sugar that is in say, a carrot? What veggies can I eat?

I am assuming all fruit is out of the equation?

So this leaves me with meat, beans, and nuts?

Not trying to be a smartass, just trying to clarify.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

No problem, Cubbie.

Some carbs is ok. No need to go to zero. Try to get into the 40 to 60 gm/day range and stay there. Dont eat too much protein!

No starchy veggies for a while; things like potatoes, peas, carrots, and beans. Stick with leafy green vegetables (kale, collards, spinach). No fruit for a few weeks, then bring back the high fiber ones like berries first. Stay clear of watermelon, grapes, and bananas.

If you can adjust to having full cream in coffee and tea, you'll be suprised how satisfying it is. Drink as much as you want.

See, and this goes back to my grocery thread that I threw out there but no one responded to:

Can you just give me an example of what you buy at the grocery store? What types of cheese, etc.

typical...
Meat: veal, beef, liver, pork-including bacon, lamb. Poultry no more than once a month.
Fish: Alaskan salmon, Canadian turbo, flounder, crab, shrimp.
Veggies: Peppers, onions, mushrooms, kale, spinach, broc, cali, salad greens.
Cheese: cheddar, pepper jack, (NO cottage cheese)
Butter
Eggs
heavy cream
mineral water (whatever is on sale - I like Pelegrino and Gerolsteiner)
Olive Oil (first cold pressed)
Nuts (Planters has a raw blend that's roasted in sea salt and no oil)
Yogurt: try FAGE and look for the one that's full fat-if they have it and most places dont. Anything with fruit or honey is to be avoided and thats 99% of the yogurt you will see in supermarkets so dont buy anything unless you see lots of fat on the label and very little sugar -less than 10 gm.
Lindt 90 % or Godiva 86% chocolate.

Nice! That, I can do. I'm going to start going all organic too...at least in my meats. I don't think I'm willing to pay more for the organic veggies yet.

Do you ever toss back some booze? If so, what do you drink? Not a major concern, but I do like to toss back some beers occasionally.

Beer bad bro (as a regular diet). Simple carbs and the metabolic pathways of fructose and alcohol combined. Maybe check out the bitter truth video again.

Mostly wine with some occasional liquor. Almost no beer - I honestly cant say it's zero.

To be honest, I wouldnt waste my money on organic meat; it's still going to be grain-fed only now you'll pay more for it. Just be choosy at the supermarket and buy good cuts. You can move on to grass-fed later once you start getting the benefits of eating more fat...and when your take-home pay is higher...

Are you married? Would you like to be? I might be tempted to leave my wife for you. :o

I'm more concerned with the possibility that quinolone antibiotics have been fed to the animal. I think in a lot of animals they aren't supposed to be, but fish and turkeys I believe can still get them. And who knows what slips under the radar.

LW, just curious (no homo) [not that there's anything wrong with that] hows your physique on this diet for an extended period of time?

I know it. I'm not talking about a daily basis. 2 times per month maybe. I thought light beer wasn't that bad as far as carbs and sugar went though?

Yeah, Miller Lite, MGD 64, and Michelob Ultra don't spike my sugars. ... But you might as well be drinking piss.
