The benefits of supplementation are so many that I hardly know where to begin. I will just add links as I find them. It has a significant role in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human metabolism and, because of water treatment and other aspects of living in the 21st century, almost everyone doesnt get enough.

The only contraindication to supplementation is reduced kidney capacity.

ok, round 1:

Dietary magnesium intake and risk of stroke: a meta-analysis of prospective studies

Excellent, as always. Let me add that it shouldnt be taken at the same time with Ca/VitD as absorption is reduced.

Magnesium is an important nutrition element of our body. It has lot of benefits. These are some functions of Magnesium.
1.Production and transport of energy
2. Production of proteinContraction and relaxation of muscles
3. Function of certain enzymes in the body.

What do the Superduper moderator and the Resident Chief Chemist think of calcium carbonate 675mg, magnisium hydroxide 135 g and (simethacone 60mg) [Roliads] as both a Ca and Mg supp?
With a little vit D on the side.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's very unlikely that you have a calcium issue if you're eating your greens with enough fat. Magnesium is harder to come by in food and water...so...a little magnesium and a little D on the side might be best.

You feeling better about your kidneys ability to handle D and Mg these days?

they seem to be chugging along fine. Creat=1.5 last fall/ range over the past few years >1.4<1.9. Have a bit of osteopenia with a dexascan in a few months so will continue the Fosamax and Ca/ vit D supp. Not at all sue how the Mg salt will effect the Ca absorption.

I thought Fosamax had issues that made it unsafe. My mother lost teeth taking that stuff.

News to me but not surprising, it also appears to lose its effectiveness in a couple years. A friend of mine with metastatic cancer into the bone took it IV.

The UPS MAN/WOMAN brought my order of NOW supp's and minerals. I ordered Magnesium Citrate and while I was on the website I got to looking at their multi vitamins. NOW has a men's multi called ADAM and it makes Centrum look kinda weak. I could not find the mag Citrate locally. I went to 4 different drug stores.

I started taking 400mg of Mag Citrate yesterday and we shall see. In one of the magnesium blogs LW posted, Cymbalta was indicated for fibromyalgia. It was recognized off label for diabetic neuropathy, but know is fully indicated for that also.

I heard that you cannot really measure magnesium in the blood because this way you cannot tell how much magnesium you have in the cells. Is this true? Is blood testing for magnesium worthless?

I also read that when you drink alcohol the body gets rid of a lot of magnesium, is this true? This would suck. I drink wine daily and I also drink pretty much coffee. :(

Yes.

Not entirely, but unless you have reason to think your intake is adequate, there's no point: you'll be deficient at the cellular level.

Yes, but that is no reason to give up wine or coffee.

All of the above are more reasons why supplementation is necessary for just about everyone.

UPDATE:
I walked that 400mg of Magnesium C, back to 200mg. Immediately after I started taking the Mag C my heart rate went down. Before I started TEST and the LCHF diet my heart rate resting was always in the 60's. After starting TRT and the diet it went up to 80's BPM. I started Mag C last Friday and Saturday morning it was 62 BPM and Sunday am it was 54 BPM. The 'NOW' multi has 100mg + the additional 200mg = 300mg Mag C. I'm going to let that ride for a while and see how it works.

You probably need to taper or eliminate your BP meds even more.

Magnesium is a vasodilator (a calcium channel blocker) and a muscle relaxant.

I saw my Cardiologist Monday. While he was happy about my weight, he wasnt too thrilled that I stopped the Norvasc. Wouldnt you know, I fast paced from the parking lot, through 4 hallways to where I was supposed to meet with him and they checked my BP and it was 154/80. My heart rate was 74. 3months ago that would have been about 185/90 and pulse rate about 110. He said I had high blood pressure and should not be off the Novasc until I got it into the 120's.

I had faxed him my BP/HR/BS record from the last 3 weeks and showed him on the spreadsheet my BP for the last 5 days was in the 120's and for 3 weeks it was never above 137 with the exception of one time.

I really think this Doctor is a fine surgeon, but I believe some doctors get into a locked mind set, and unless they thought of the new regimen that is actually improving your health, they stay in a very unreal pessimistic world.

I am scheduled to have a Stress test Tuesday and we will see what the results are from that and go from there. It will take a few days for him to review the results.

He has been wanting me to exercise more, so I told him, my son and I are going up to the high school track and walking. He says, " Now dont over do-it"
I told him I was going to work up to sprinting so I could train for the Senior Olympics May 2013. He didnt have anything to say and barely cracked a smile.

So be it...'A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do'

There's no need to rush things. If you need to be on Norvasc now, then stay with it. Keep monitoring your BP. I suspect that eventually you will have an even stronger case to make for losing the Norvasc.

I dont need it. My blood pressure and heart rate are the best they have been in years. Even under strenuous exertion. I moved and carried 6 80lb concrete bags yesterday along with loading and unloading 12 40lb bags of river rock on and off my trailer. Today I poured a concrete slab for my new air conditioning unit. BTW I do this by my self. When I say I do this, its not telling someone else where to put the bags. :) Anyway, I check my BP after I finish and I'm still breathing hard, and my BP never went above 165. My pulse rate was still a little high at 104 after resting for 15 minutes, but thats because I still have winter dust on me. :D
