Far less than one percent of college football players test positive for anabolic steroids or performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). But rapid and dramatic weight gains by thousands of players suggest that the use of anabolic steroids is widespread according to an investigation by the Associated Press. The Associated Press (AP) analyzed the body weight records for…

I was interviewed by the AP for the full length version of this article that was released in December. They interviewed me in July of last year and it took until December to go through all of the data they collected to write this story. Some of the numbers were mind blowing when you actually saw them in black and white. Many people think that PED use doesn't start until someone reaches the professional level. This is not so at all. The testing policy that the NCAA adheres to is a joke.

Josh, could you elaborate? For example, a 200 lb guy could take 300 mgs' of test weekly. Since test exists naturally, the only way to test for exogenous test is to look at test epi test ratios. They need to stay below 6 to one, and 300 mgs will pass.

Another trick (Dan Duchaine clarified this one) was to find gear that particular labs don't look for. For example, say they don't look for Masteron, you could then run 400 mast w/ 300 test.

Just read the article. I agree, that kids this age can easily put on 20 lbs a year from just eating and lifting,

However 60 plus lbs? I don't think so.

I believe that 300mg a week would raise you well past the the 4 to 1 ratio that is allowed, unless epitestosterone was being taken as well. Any AAS will raise your T/E ratios. T/E is the preliminary test given. If the test comes back higher than 4/1, then they will conduct another test to see exactly what was taken. Yes, there are some steroids that are not tested for in the NCAA. The thing is these tests are rarely given. Athletes are occasionally given tests, but these tests are going to test for street/rec drugs. Many of the guys passing with using low levels of test are using Test Suspension at about 25mg per day. Of course HGH, IGF, and other peptides are being used as well that are undetectable.

Yes, it used to be 6 to 1 which made it really to pass a test. Also, correction to my post above. Most AAS will cause an elevation in TE ratios but not all.

It depends on the individual. Some genetically lucky athletes can get away with it.

If I were an athlete determined to use steroids, I'd order up some genetic testing and hope that I have this => UGT2B17 homozygous deletion/deletion genotype:

Common Doping Test for Athletes is Unfair (and Racist)
