Yes and no. If you invested BILLIONS (with a B) into developing a new drug, and then getting it passed through all the red tape and government BS, you'd expect to be able to then recoup that investment in somewhat of a timely manner. By preventing generic companies from copying the drug right away, you are allowing the company that took all of the financial risk (and expenditure of cash that could have been being used for other purposes) to recoup that investment.
As a consumer, it does suck not to have a generic alternative for a while, but not having some of these drugs developed in the first place, would suck more.
And, no, I do not work for a pharmaceutical company!
