48 Winnie Pills Equals Intent to Distribute

So this cop in Las Vegas (not that Las Vegas, but in New Mexico) lives with his little brother, who has some plan to stick Suboxone up his butt and smuggle it into the local county jail. So the cops execute a search warrant on the house. They find the Suboxone.

In the older brother police officer's closet, they find steroids.

"Large quantities," they say.

Distribution. Multiple counts of possession.

Must be a pretty big steroid kingpin distribution case, right?

So this following story has more information, including about the jailhouse snitch who ratted out little bro and his scheme to smuggle Suboxone into the jail using his butthole. Expand the quote to see the punchline:

During the approved search, Patrick's closet allegedly contained several confirmed controlled substances. More than 100 syringes were also found inside a drawer, according to court documents.

Those substances were tested by the state Department of Public Safety Forensics Laboratories. Three substances tested positive for anabolic steroids and were confirmed to be controlled substances.

Four dozen Stanozolol pills were recovered from the residence. A deputy wrote that Patrick was in possession of about 1,200 mg of the substance; estimating the supply to be over five months of a person's supply.

So do the math. 25 mg x 48 pills = 1200 mg.

Big, big bust, here!

And that is a 5 month supply. Will one of you please tell me how you can make 48 Winnie pills become a 5 month cycle. This I have to hear. There are 150 days in 5 months and so that is less than one pill every 3 days. One could get massive on that kind of dosage!

Both of the preceding stories indicate that the Winstrol pills were in "different" packages, which indicated they were going to be distributed.

So not only is 48 pills a 5 months supply, but he was going to distribute it so multiple people could cycle on this magical Winnie. Wow. This must be really potent stuff. Half of New Mexico was going to get jacked off of these large quantities of steroids.

So wait until you hear some more details on how he had this stuff packaged. No wonder they just knew he was distributing. This will be so easy to prove:
Deputies said during the search they also found several different types of suspected steroids in Patrick Maes' bedroom, inside a shoebox on top of a pay stub from the police department. The substances were sent to a lab for testing and, on July 28, confirmed to be anabolic steroids, which are illegal to own without a prescription.

The amount of steroids found in Patrick Maes' room was enough for a five-month supply and were distributed between a labeled box, an unlabeled box and plastic baggie, according to the affidavit.

Deputies said that "based on the different packaging and quantity of the substance" they believe Patrick Maes was intending to distribute the steroids.

So there you have it. A labeled box. While that is suspicious criminal activity all by itself, they knew he as dealing because he also had an unlabeled box. And, to cap it off, the ultimate proof of drug dealing: a plastic baggie. Definite distribution right there. Yes, sir. That is some solid evidence that this was for distribution. I am glad that these officers know so much about steroids and are keeping New Mexico safe!

Back the blue!

Oh, no! Wait! He also had bacteriostatic water! Wow! This was one big time drug dealer dude. I am so glad they got this kingpin dealer off the streets. Here is the confirmation that the distribution charge was for the Winnie:

Investigators also located injectable testosterone, along with Arimidex, a drug often used to control gynecomastia — a side effect of taking anabolic steroids — and bacteriostatic water, which is often used to dilute or dissolve injected medications. More than 100 syringes were found in a drawer as well.

Police allege that Patrick Maes had more than a five-month supply of one of the steroids, Stanozolol, and that the pills were packaged in individual bags, leading investigators to suspect Maes intended to sell the pills.

You folks can all sleep safer at night now having read about this public safety bust.

A condition of release was that he cannot have firearms. I guess that it only makes sense not to have a roid raging Winnie dealer armed.

48 Winstrol pills.

Has anyone ever even seen that many in one place? Not in pictures, but in real life.

Massive stash. This dude was just asking for a distribution charge with a huge amount of pills like that. 48 pills lasts 5 months. No one person could possibly use 1200mg all by himself! It's impossible.

“Approved search”. Would be interesting to read what they had to get an actual warrant.

Also, IIRC some states have separate threshold for searching a safe so if these were locked up maybe he’d be in a better position ?

Rick Collins wrote about this years ago. The laws regarding steroids were written by idiots who knew nothing about steroid use and users. Quantities that every user knows is for personal use is looked at by the system as amounts that must be for distribution (which obviously drastically increases the penalties).

I am not aware of many countries laws regarding the amounts to be considered for distribution, but it seems they are a joke mostly everywhere.

"Large quantity" is defined over here for "Oxandrolone" at 100mg or more. At least they thought about calculating out the ester weight for injectables (no joke).

It's insanity. AAS shouldn't even be Sched III. Sched 4 or just off entirely. Nobody believes these things present a risk to society, and less health risk then a sugar laden Starbucks grande drink daily habit.

Pitiful.

He basically took 2 from his bottle and got fucked that’s actually pretty sad. All lean and ready to throw some winny in.. door gets kicked because of the fuck up brother. Damn

You see this all the time in smaller towns. It’s a common occurrence and most don’t have the means or access to the proper representation to get this down to simple possession. Knowing how your local area operates is very important when engaged in these sorts of things. Even though we are not dealing with harder things, in the eyes of many law enforcement officers, it is nearly the same thing. If steroids are and will continue to be a major part of your life, it is very important to factor things like this into where you decide to rest your head. You’d be surprised at the amount of weird situations that can result in the door of a normally law abiding citizen getting broken down. At that point we are all chapo if they can get a headline for some extra funding.

insane ofc, but i suspect they are trying to jack up as many charges as they can, but i be curious how this case actually plays out in court. not sure how NM looks at this. his problem is obviously smuggling shit into prison. also, for some reason and this seems to be a pattern, law enforcement is targeted at a much higher rate then regular people it seems. or they just make it into the news

I doubt he will see prison. Highly unlikely.

Also, I do not think that LE are targeted at a much higher rate. It is the latter option you suggested. They just make it into the news. If this was just the dummy's brother who worked a normal job he would have been arrested, but it would never have been reported. Steroid arrests are not really newsworthy unless the arrestee is a public servant or a celebrity or a major dealer.

This is the crux of the matter:

No one is going to set up a harm reduction forum for Sugar and Tobacco. A simple reason is that it takes a whole lot of sugar and tobacco to do cause a great deal of harm to an individual. Same can't be said for AAS.
As for alcohol, they've tried that in the past. It made a bit more people sober, but a few more people became exposed to bullets.

Good quote. I enjoy reading that every time.

I'll tweak your above. Cigs and AAS are close comparators. Wide distribution of effects with cumulative use. Alcohol by far is worst offender just by sheer volume of use.

Remember, neither AMA or DEA wanted AAS scheduled in 1988 testimony. Silly.
