Corona hits home

Sorry for the situation. This virus hits people different ... and for a nurse to go from no symptoms to ICU within a day is alarming.

Glad to see some members here taking it seriously instead of whining about no gyms or 'media hoax'. Working in a hospital, you know how real this thing is.

There are cases where people have ZERO respiratory symptoms, sick for weeks and then when tested, they are positive.

Early in the month, docs said wife has it (though tests are not available). She is high risk. We have been quarantined for 3 weeks so far. Her breathing is rough but not needing respirator. I have very mild symptoms and would otherwise not think anything of it. It is like a weird asthma in upper lungs but not responsive to albuterol. Time will tell.

A family of 3, friends of ours, went to the ER beginning of the month. Were told they have it (again no test available) and to stay home. Yet 'officially' their county has only 1 confirmed (tested) case.

There must be many sick or carrying that don't know it. Some Epidemiologists are suggesting the USA being the worst hit industrialized nation with 3.3 million deaths by end of summer. And quarantining just the high risk people underestimates the risk for low-risk people - hospitals will still be overloaded. We will just have to see what really happens.

In Albany, NY, visiting nurses for high risk people (chemo, immunocompromised, etc.) don't have mask available at all. The hospital simply can't get them. So they could introduce this to these vulnerable people ... or catch it themselves.

The federal government keeps out-biding the states and is stockpiling them for their own purposes. The major production of masks is in a region of China hit bad by this virus. So relief is not near. US manufacturers have not yet stepped up to making needed medical supplies.

Hope your 1 mask a day works for you. Sorry that you are in such a situation.

Good to hear you and your wife are holding up well with the Virus.

My Mom just got "diagnosed" with it
Went on Anti Virals and is doing okay.
Symptoms are getting s little bit better as well.

We are playing it by ear (shes 70)

It's quite odd how a healthy young woman like @puckhog s nurse friend, get devastated by this virus.

Yet my 70 year old Mother is coping well.
Same with you Old, you're no spring chicken if I remember correctly.

This all means that I will in all likelihood be getting it shortly as well, due to contact.
Just hope im not one of the unlucky cases.

Keep calm and carry on gents

No self isolation for me, I'm also doing work inside hospitals right now (Infectious control) as well as infrastructure projects, so I've been deemed "essential"
Still going to go to TOWN trying to prevent transmission, being a IPAC.. it's really quite easy.. so long as you're ready for it.

Pretty much just imagine that you're fighting the air itself

This is a somewhat scary situation for sure.. My 70yr old mother, who has recently completed chemo for lung cancer, was brought to the hospital on Friday with severe symptoms resembling covid (fever, can't breath etc.). I guess we're lucky here as she was tested, with results back the following day. She has pneumonia but thankfully negative for covid. Best wishes for all who are affected by this and much respect to the front line workers for their selfless actions in putting themselves at risk to help the rest of us.

It's weird my step mom had it as well, previously had Lyme's disease. She is fine, had a bit of lethargy but beyond that has fully recovered. Weird how it effects different people

Actually, interestingly enough.
My mom had Lyme disease as well.

If I was a smarter person I'd be able to draw a correlation lol

Thanks brother @EazyE

Ouch it's rough when this hits very close to home. The latest update on my cousin's condition is so far so good but still self-quarantined at home. I myself is sticking close to home and getting food and stuff delivered. Hang tough!

Stay safe Brother and all the best your Mom !

@Old best wishes for you and your family as well as your friends. You are right about this virus being selective with symptom severity. So odd.

This whole situation, seeing it from the inside, strengthens my contempt against the government. This bailout is a joke. Yes, the money will help many families but the bill is saturated with money going places it shouldn't be going. To think that $1200 is enough to keep an American citizen afloat is a slap in the face. Anyways.....

This is far from over. Stay home, stay clean, stay safe.

@flenser thank you. I understand your thinking and you are not alone.
It is hard not to feel contempt when the truth starts to show. But people just want "to-have-their-ears-tickled" which allows them to be picked to the bone.

Everyone just want to be happy but one has to keep it real and keep their eyes open.

Yea I'm 'springing' at 59. Have neurological problems but the rest of me is fine (well, maybe a bit ugly, lol). Wife is older though with several problems (she's the pretty one).

She had a bad day today even though its 3 weeks now. Tried a far infrared lamp and it helped breathing. To keep breathing and limit damage to cilia from the virus and/or inflammation is key as with any pneumonia.

As long as she pull out of this, it is probably just as well to have gotten this early so we actually have hospital as an option. Soon that option will be gone for many.

Glad is was JUST pneumonia - thought that is not great.

Ironic that for years heard how terrible 'socialized medicine' is with Canada sited as an example. Yet you get tested and help right away.

What they are doing around here because they don't have enough Covid tests is to test people for the regular flues. It is unlikely (though not impossible) one would have both so if its positive, then probably don't have Covid. So they are at least trying things.

Today a friend, 35 with a newborn, just developed horrible lung pain to otherwise flu symptoms. Regular flu tests were negative so they said its covid19, sent him home to quarantine and got a nebulizer. The change was sudden.

One frustrating thing is they don't know how long antibodies will last for survivors. With the common coronavirus(es), immunity is often just a year ... then you can get over it again.

Godspeed to all of you folks and all impacted family members. Please take care and hope for the best.

Idk man, think the medical field is learning on the job about it. I don't know if true, but remember seeing drinking water right after getting it could possibly keep it from getting into the lungs which is bad if it gets there.
That's BS
That'll never work.
As if drinking water would prevent weed, crack cocaine or meth smoke from reaching your lungs.

Wish you all away from the virus.

As I read in some news, this virus is with a family, the name is called coronavirus. The SARS and MERS are also members of this family, like grandpa generation. Now, COVID-19 could be the name for all the sons in this peroids in 2020 . When the virus was found in China, it could be COVID-19-A or COVID-19-B. Then, it mutated into COVID-19-F, G , H, etc. The symptoms as cough, fever, tiredness are with A or B. And, some cases also come out in China without such symptoms these days, just like the cases in Italy and US. That leads to hardly be found.

God bless the human and wish it can be away soon!
Wrong.
This one is a biological weapon. Thus "man-made".
Well, it's actually man-modified. Somebody took the SARS backbone and chemically modified it to make it more contagious and deadlier.

I sincerely hope you’re wrong that this is an engineered attack. At this point nothing is off the table!

Wish you are wrong. Then, it could be the WWIII. What's worse, it could be the end of this civilization.

Again, I hope that nobody would be so evil as to modify/engineer this virus and release as a weapon on humankind. But as I said nothing is off the table at this point. For some interesting reading on caronavirus, pandemics and just what old Bill Gates has been up to recently, check out something called “ID2020”....also check out “Bill Gates eugenics”...

Anytime I hear eugenics, it makes me worry. Not sure I want to dive down that rabbit hole

Yeah, I agree. Bill Gates definitely has some motives beyond just rescuing mankind. He wants to control it. He has the ear of the UN which is already a bad sign...

Testing

I realize it takes time to produce Covid19 tests and if someone tests ‘clear’ they would need to be tested later when they get it or some other flu - so even more tests are needed.

But it seems probable that testing is being limited for sociological and political reasons as well. Insufficient testing limits confirmed cases and makes the situation look better than it is. This helps calm panic. But it also makes the government look like it is doing a good job to “flatten-the-curve” when it is merely masking the short term.

Perhaps this reasoning is cynical but the behavior of ‘leaders’ does not exactly inspire confidence. And it is a common technique - not just governments.

To illustrate, we could, for example, eliminate AIDS by refusing to test for HIV. There would just be a bunch of people who die from an unexplained immune failure. Governments could save a bundle by not treating people because they have an undiagnosed illness. All that needs to done is to 'redefine' the situation.

Sticking one's head in the sand is a common denial technique that 'redefines' the situation. People use it to cope and control anxiety. But in the long run, it is better to learn how to face one's demons and hold your head up. Then one is in a better position to handle what may come. Perhaps this is just 'male' reasoning.

Immunity

Normally one develops antibodies against a virus, which provides immunity for the future. Plenty of experts are saying this will be so for this virus … but they don’t know for how long.
Up to 10 percent of coronavirus patients leaving medical facilities in Wuhan after being tested negative for Covid-19 seem to have subsequently been re-infected, according to the South China Morning Post. This is not the first time that there have been reports of re-infection. Nevertheless, scientists say that it is unlikely that the virus is striking twice.”
"The researchers then tried to reinfect two of them but failed, which suggests the animals were immune. That finding is very encouraging, as it suggests that it is possible to induce protective immunity against the virus"

You can be infected with other coronaviruses over and over. We don’t know if that’s true for this virus”

So if lack of long term immunity is a problem, it rather takes the wind out of the developing antibody tests. Again we wait and see. Perhaps this is a place to hope positive since no good will come from excessive worry - but that isn't the same as sticking one's head in the sand, lol.
