Dr. John Crisler Died - Suicide

Dr. Scally,

I think it's admiral of you to continue to post in this thread and provide updates and information, regarding depression, knowing the two of you did not not see eye to eye on many occasions. Hats off to you for looking past that and using this thread to continue your fight to bring this deadly silent killer to the forefront and help educate those that may be suffering like Dr Crisler and many before him.

I just wanted you to know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Thank you very much.

Alan B. Krueger, who advised two presidents and helped lead economics toward a more scientific approach to research and policymaking, was found dead on Saturday at his home in Princeton, N.J. He was 58.

The cause was suicide, according to a statement by his family released by Princeton University, where Mr. Krueger taught for more than three decades. The Princeton police said they were called to the home on Saturday morning and found Mr. Krueger unresponsive. He was declared dead at a hospital.

On the day a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Sydney Aiello escaped with her life. However, the grief of losing 17 of her classmates and teachers, as well as the long-lasting effects of enduring such a traumatic event, weighed heavily on her. And this weekend, at the age of 19, Aiello took her own life.

Now, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas community is mourning yet another loss.

Sydney's mother, Cara Aiello, told CBS Miami that her daughter struggled with survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in the year following the tragedy. And while she reportedly never asked for help, she struggled to attend college classes because she was scared of being in a classroom.

Sydney was also a close friend of Meadow Pollack, one of the students who was shot and killed in the Parkland shooting. Meadow's father, Andrew, became one of the most visible of the Parkland victims' parents when he delivered a searing and emotional speech at the White House just a few days after the shooting, arguing for an increase in school safety rather than changes to America's gun laws.

CBS News journalists embedded with Andrew Pollack as part of the documentary "39 Days", which showcased the birth of a movement as many Parkland students turned their grief into action.

While the nation's attention turned to budding young activists like David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez, however, other Parkland survivors were suffering in silence. And the Aiello family's tragedy is an all too painful reminder that trauma effects teens deeply, often quietly, and for years.

Ryan Petty, whose daughter Alaina died in the shooting, told CBS Miami he worries that more traumatized Parkland teens will take their own lives. So, he has focused his grief and his efforts into suicide prevention.

"It breaks my heart that we've lost yet another student from Stoneman Douglas," Petty said. "My advice to parents is to ask questions, don't wait."

A second Parkland shooting survivor has killed himself, Coral Springs police confirmed on Sunday.

Investigators told the Miami Herald that a current Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student died in “an apparent suicide” on Saturday night.

Police are still investigating.

Though police could not confirm the age of the student, Coral Springs police spokesman Tyler Reik said the student was a juvenile. Sources say the student was a male sophomore. His name has not been released.

The death comes just about a week after a recent Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate, Sydney Aiello, took her own life after being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office told NBC News that Aiello died from a gunshot wound to the head.

“When you look at Columbine as an example, almost just as many students killed themselves after the fact than in the actual shooting. That needs to change. We need to get them the help they need.”

Two of the most prominent chefs in the business want us to take a moment and remember the man who exposed their world, elevated their world and personalized their world like no other before him. Last month, in a playful video posted to Twitter, Eric Ripert and José Andrés set the stage for Bourdain Day on Tuesday, on what would have been Anthony Bourdain’s 63rd birthday.

“On June 25, we are all going to celebrate the birthday of our dear friend and beloved Tony Bourdain,” Ripert says in a video shared thousands of times.

More than a year after he died by suicide in a hotel bathroom in Kaysersberg, France, Bourdain still occupies a place in our hearts — and perhaps always will until the day we shuffle off this mortal coil. On the first anniversary of Bourdain’s death on June 8, tributes and remembrances flooded Twitter, some so raw they were hard to read. Chefs and friends also piped up, including food-truck maverick Roy Choi, who probably spoke for many when he told People magazine, “I still can’t believe it.”

...

But another of Bourdain’s legacies is one we don’t care to talk about: his suicide and the mental state that led him to that awful moment. Yet evidence suggests the more we ignore the problems that beset us and/or our loved ones — the fears, the shame, the fevered thoughts in the night — the more we contribute to the growing suicide rates. Talk, experts tell us, can help save lives.

I miss Anthony so much. It's an absolute shame and huge loss for the rest of the world, culinary or not, that he no longer with us. He was an extremely talented writer. The way he described food and culture was as chewy as his recipes and food presentations. I don't get too misty eyed over celebrities passing on, but this tragic loss had me watered up. RIP.

U.S. suicide rates are at the highest level since World War II, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, per Bloomberg's Cynthia Koons.

By the numbers: From 2000 to 2006, the suicide rate in the U.S. increased by an average of about 1% a year. From 2006 through 2016, it increased by 2% a year. There were 1.4 million suicide attempts in 2017 and 47,000 deaths.

Why it matters: Despite an improvement of material well-being, emotional distress in the U.S. has reached "crisis levels," according to the CDC.
  • Koons reports that the national mental health epidemic stems from various causes, including "genetic, social and environmental factors."
  • It's reached the scale of "the global financial crisis" — and yet there is no groundwork in policy, manpower or in institutions to address it.

Well thanks to God to have meet Dr. Scally.

Low dosesvof hCG always seems to be to me a ridicoulus formula. The basis of his depression, thats for sure.Rip.

Was HCG a known part of Crisler's regimen? You think it has psychological effects? Have you experienced this first hand?

An Illustrative Case of Suicidal Hanging Versus Accidental Hanging Associated With Autoerotic Activity: Necessary Medicolegal Death Investigation and Role of Cognitive Bias

The majority of hanging deaths are relatively straightforward when opining the manner of death, typically determined to be suicide. However, there are rare hanging deaths that require the forensic pathologist to seek additional information. Forensic pathologists commonly consider an accidental manner of death when the hanging death scene includes evidence of solitary sexual activity consistent with autoerotic asphyxia.

Here, the authors present a case of an initially apparent suicidal hanging where important death scene details photographed by the medical examiner investigator and history provided by family members during subsequent conversations ultimately helped the forensic pathologist conclude an opinion that the hanging was accidental, likely due to autoerotic activity.

The decedent, who hanged himself in the closet of his bedroom, was wearing shorts that were initially believed to be inadvertently torn; however, further investigation revealed his shorts were intentionally modified to expose his genitalia. Additional evidence documented from the death scene photographs and conversations with his mother revealed items and activities consistent with autoerotic behavior.

Before opining a manner of death in hanging deaths, forensic pathologists are encouraged to consider details beyond that obtained from the initial death scene investigation and postmortem examination. A thorough medicolegal death investigation should not be viewed as introducing cognitive bias, but rather as necessary information needed to determine the most accurate cause and manner of death.

Autoerotic Accident or Death from Internal Cause in An Autoerotic Setting?

Highlights

Autoerotic accidents may occur in individuals as young as 13 years old.

The leading cause of death in the autoerotic accidents was asphyxia.

Only one of deceased had built a self-rescue mechanism.

Alcohol consumption seems to play a minor role in autoerotic causalities.

Chemical toxicological analysis should be carried out more consistently.

Introduction: Autoerotic deaths are rare events. The death scene is often bizarre and the death unexpected, thus often requiring forensic autopsies. Our analysis will provide an overview of the expected range of causes and manners of death in cases of autoerotic deaths.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out on all scientific and forensic autopsies and postmortem examinations performed at the Department of Legal Medicine in Hamburg, Germany, over the period of 2004-2018.

Results: 25 cases of autoerotic fatalities were identified over this 15-year-period or one to two cases per year, respectively. Autopsies were carried out on 23 of these cases. 16 (64%) of the cases involved autoerotic accidents and 7 (28%) from internal causes of death during an autoerotic act. Two cases had not undergone an autopsy.

On average, those who were involved in autoerotic accidents had been younger in age (average age: 37 years) than the individuals who died from internal disease (average age: 61 years). Only one woman was involved.

The most common cause of death in autoerotic accidents was strangulation (hanging: 8 cases, ligature strangulation: 1 case), followed by smothering of the respiratory tract (4 cases). Fatal intoxication was diagnosed in three of the cases. Fatalities with natural cause of death solely involved cardiovascular causes of death.

Conclusions: Autoerotic deaths involved a wide range of natural and non-natural causes of death. The reconstruction of such unusual cases and detection of non-natural fatalities requires thorough investigation of the scene of death as well as a postmortem external and internal examination including a chemical toxicological and blood alcohol analysis.
