A common misconception is that protein not used for muscle repair is stored as fat or excreted as if you pee it all out. This is not accurate. The USDA, vegetarians, and many nutritionists tell you to eat just enough protein for muscle repair. That might be a very small amount. You might only need 50 grams a day or less for that. They fill the rest of their diet with carbs usually and fat in some cases. However, BBers don't eat so much protein because it is all being stored as muscle. It serves many purposes. 1. yes, some protein is used for repair and rebuilding. 2. it creates a positive nitrogen balance which promotes muscles retaining nitrogen and hence hypertropy. 3. protein is converted into glyco-proteins which are like carbs--protein gets used as a slow burning energy. 4. protein causes glucogen release which counteracts insulin and slows the entry of carbs into the blood stream and carbs clearance from the blood stream.
So, whether you get fat or not has to do with your hormone balance and your overall caloric intake.
