Filtration Porn

Thanks for the detailed pics. i have most of that from a vacuum chamber set up i made when i was making my own QWET extractions. Maybe homebrew isnt as far off as i originally thought.

@eje1990 thanks so much for this thread. I’m tired of syringe filters and this thread makes it easy to figure out what I need to move up.
Have you ever used the one piece bottle top or always with the media bottles? I’m paranoid about cleaning glassware after the filter process. I want to go from bottle top unit to sealed vials. Ty in advance

No problem man. I found a recommended manufacturer pressure for sterile recievers. I'm at the gym I'll get back to you on that. I can say I have used one and the bottom spider cracked. Didn't leak but it was sketchy. But that was also before I had the gague.

Cleaning the glass media bottles isn’t that difficult. First I wash the lids with dawn, rinse with hot tap water, then rinse with distilled water and then rinse with 70% alcohol. Then I wrap them in a sheet of foil and bake them at the recommended temp for an hour.

Now I start on the bottles. I use Dawn detergent, a bottle brush and hot tap water first. I wash and rinse well with the hot water twice. Then i have two squirt bottles that I fill one with distilled water and the other with 70% alcohol.

After rinsing well with the hot tap water, I hold the bottle upside down and squirt the distilled water up at the bottom of the jar and allow all distilled water to flow back down the sides and out of the open top. Then with the bottle still upside down, I squirt alcohol at the bottom of the jar and allow it to run down the sides and out of the open top. I also squirt the outside down with the distilled water and alcohol. Now I lay the bottle on its side till I have all of them clean so that minimal particles in the air can settle into the bottles. Then I stand them upright and loosely place a sheet of foil over the top of the bottles and bake at 450 for 1 1/2 hours.

Edit: After removing media bottles from oven, I cover with the lids that have already been cleaned and baked and they will remain sterile until ready to use the next time.

Love the squirt bottle idea!

Thanks for your time. Sounds pretty easy. Guess I’ll be going with a bottle top unit and some 500ml media bottles!
With media bottles full of sterile gear, I’m going to use the septa top then pull clean oil out with 50cc syringes. Then fill up sterile vials.
Does that sound ok? I can’t really see it getting contaminated with that method!
Time to log on to Medlabsupply. Lol

Nope. Can’t do that. That’s my way. Maybe @Iron Vett way too. And maybe some other people ways also. But not you. You can’t.

So I have not been around for a while, just found this thread. Last time I brewed I used a hand vacuum pump and that was a pain. So I decided to pick up a electric 1.5cfm vacuum pump, all the associated brass fittings are also on the way. As well as the gauge and valve and 1/4 inch hose.

I initially was only going to do 30-40 grams but decided to do 60. I have 2 of the Autofil 500ml bottle top filters, .2um. Will I be OK or do I need to get a couple more?

Depending on the concentration of your brew. If you're gonna brew 250mg test over dosed at 275 that's 68.75gs of raws for 250ml. You could essentially filter twice that with one of your filters. 500ml filter is usually good for the same volume of brew.

Great, thanks for the reply. And now I know once I have done 500ml its time for the next one....

Is it a hot plate with magnetic stirrer or just a hot plate ?

if no magnetic stirrer, how do you get it all mixed well ?

Is hot plate with a magnetic stirrer mandatory?

I know it's been several years since the thread was started, if anybody around please reply. Thanks a bunch :)

Back then I was using glass stirring rods. And it mixed just fine with a little bit of heat. But now I use a magnetic stirrer. Just transfer it from a hot plate to the stirrer. But if you wanted to invest in a hot plate/ magnetic stirrer combo it's definitely worth the money.

Sorry for the stupid question, is it possible to change the membrane in the vacuum filter after running 500 ml? And is it possible to change the membrane 0.45 to 0.22 in one filter?

What kinda setup are you referring here?
