I've got some Orvis waders for weather like this...gotta get them browns Bo

Anybody ever hit this workout?

Ran through it with a buddy...I don't liked the timed aspect that crossfit incorporates. I took my time, kept form and stayed moving. I like the exercise selection but it left me with some gas in the tank, I'm used to doing a much larger selection and pausing, finished with some DL 3x's and prowler.

KING KONG
Deadlift 455 x 1

Muscle up x 2

Squat Clean 250 x 3

Handstand Pushup x 4

3 rounds for time

Scale as needed. Women use 66% of men’s weight.

That's a Rudy Neilsen WOD of Outlaw Way fame. I also trained with Ski who was the 1st to do the workout way before Rob O did his vid.

Rudy straight up told me it was for shits and giggles, typical Crossfit ridiculousness. Back then (2010-11 I think) cross fitters were no where near a 500lb dead or 300lb clean. Ski was/is a big strong guy and he wanted test him by adding gymnastics. Also at the time 250lb+ guys weren't doing ring muscle ups and hspu.

Funny now that many cross fitters can finish King Kong. A few years ago only a handful could. A testament to the sport of exercise? So impressive a few years ago, nowadays meh...

Anyway, you doing the Open TEK?

Gar Balls !

CAJUN GARFISH BALLS
3 lbs. ground garfish
1 bundle parsley
1 bundle green onion tops
Flour
Cooking oil
2 lbs. Irish potatoes
2 onion heads
Salt to taste
Red pepper (Tabasco)
Boil potatoes until tender. Peel and mash well. Grind garfish and put in large bowl. Add mashed potatoes and fine chopped green onion tops, parsley and onion heads. Add red pepper and salt. Mix well with hands and form into balls. Roll in flour, these may be flattened to form patties, put into hot oil about 5" deep. Drop patties into hot oil. Patty will cook fast and will float when sufficiently cooked. Drop in another patty before removing one (to keep oil from burning), repeat until all are done.

-the "Crossfit Open"?

....don't take this the wrong way, but I didn't even know that was a thing. The info I just read sounds like a really good marketing strategy, and a way for more ppl to get involved. Just not my thing, maybe one day?

When I walk into the gym the only thing I have on my mind is becoming better than I was yesterday, break em down. I think the "sport" aspect of crossfit eludes my interest simply because I've always trained for sports performance. I've never made training... "the sport". Never power-lifted competitively, never got into bodybuilding. Never liked sprinting, but I sure as hell did them. I wanted to see quantifiable improvements in my athletic abilities on the field...my primary driving motivation. I guess if there was one major single event (hopefully with a large cash purse) I could see myself training timed circuits leading up to the event in a prep.

There is just so much more imo to athleticism than what is quantifiable in the crossfit games. Constantly changing environments, reaction to unknown stimulus, and making split second decisions under high stress are when we witness some of the world's most talented athletes rise to the occasion...and sometimes fail. Weather conditions, small group tactics/strategy, leadership abilities are not a variable either. I'm not knocking "Crossfit", I just have always "cross trained". They are on to something, but imo it's not there yet. I'd like to see a less controlled environment set the stage, drop these individuals into scenarios with variables and more than one way to complete said goal. Generate an environment loosely governed with very little restriction and you pose an opportunity for a man (or woman ;) to accomplish amazing feats of athleticism when they react in new and unexpected ways.

Give the athletes more free will...."fittest on the planet"?......without sounding too condescending, I'd argue that I see men do more impressive things in many other arenas of sport on a fairly consistent basis. One thing they could implement that would fit the current model though and elevate the athleticism would be more ropes course based challenges, and a higher focus on mobility and agility. In all honestly I think treading water for 10 mins is far more athletically impressive than a "clean speed ladder"....just my .02

No offense taken man. What you detail and explain for your personal goals are very similar to mine, I just happen to be surrounded by crossfitters...so when in Rome.

I'd figure you to be the type who doesn't give a shit about all the hype now days but could probably beast it if you tried and probably already have. Keep up the great training bro despite what anyone wants to call it. I'm loving what I see.

Stayed up too late watchin' my Tar Heels shit the bed
Truck in-dash read -6 this am, I estimate 20mph gusts....colder than a witch's tit
Layed out of my morning w/o, feelin' the years in my joints today.

Deer are moving, kinda strange with this wind usually they bed down.
Had a good acorn drop this fall but an unseasonably warm winter leads me to wonder if they burned through their primary food source quickly and now having to venture out more in hard weather. Dogs don't seem to mind...

@romaleos I have an opportunity to get my USAw Level 1 cert next month. More pricey than I imagined, hope it's worth it. What can I expect?

I still rock climb i wish my local rock climbing gym looked like the one posted.

For real!!! The only one that's anywhere near that scale of a wall is an hour away from where I live. I need to get back into climbing. Helps out grip strength so much

Got a small 10 ft bouldering wall built off the back deck, just tall enough for 3-4 moves but it's fun to mess around with. Lots of good top roping and multi-pitch areas around but not much for indo here.

I need to post a pic of the lat pulldown attachment you can make with a small piece of wood and varying handholds. Goes from largest full hand down to narrow finger holes...looks kinda like this but attaches directly to the pulldown machine

Man , Id like to rock climb , but I would have to drop 50lbs at least or Id drop like a rock ! I can barely get 10 chin-ups in my current weight ....If I ever go skinny thats where I"ll shift my attention to , climbing ....

I am far from skinny OGH and you would be surprised 5.5-5.7 is 3 contact and all holds are accomplished with 2 feet and a hand or 2 hands a foothold. It actually requires leg strength more then then upper body you push up with your legs making anew hold with your hand. Even 5.8 you are ok that is based offf the size of the holds and the route. PLus with the shoes your grip is incredible in a pinch I can push off of very little hold to get to a better position. 5.9 and so on you start to get some overhang that is where at times I am like oh shit can I pull my big ass up.

just start now triple OG.
I feel like those goals can coexist you just need to take time after your primary BB w/o to incorporate some body weight exercises. Pushups, pullups, JJ's, and squat thrusts are as constant in my morning ritual as coffee and Copenhagen

That's the truth right there.
It's a leg and finger strength game. I used to man handle my moves primarily just letting my arms do the work...tire out quick and are severely limited. Once you get used to pulling your legs up high and setting your footholds then extending up, you will cover ground quicker and expend less energy.
