I need help with making my rocky-ass yard look nice

Hey guys,

My wife and I bought a brand new home two years ago. The problem is, the yard really kinda sucks. I'm in Missouri, where it's basically red clay dirt and rocks everywhere. My backyard is relatively flat, but is somewhat rocky, and definitely more weeds growing than grass. My front yard is sloped away from the house, and is also faily rocky and full of weeds.

I don't have much money at all to spend on the yard - I know the best option might be to have the rocks removed, lay topsoil, and sod or plant - however, I'm planning on selling the house in a year and I would like to have a nice yard, as it will help the value of the house w/o spending alot of money.

Two years ago, the yard was SUPER rocky. However, as the yard has matured, the rocks aren't so bad. Now it's more of as issue of dry hard, dirt and thatch on the ground.

How can I get some nice grass to grow on my rocks and dry dirt? (LOL) How can I get rid of the weeds, etc. without spending much money at all?

Thanks.

Lichen. They grow on rocks and look pretty. :D

You could borrow or rent a tiller and just chew up your entire yard. That will loosen up the dirt/clay and also expose some of the rocks that you can pick out. Im far from being a landscape person, but once you tilled the yard you could add in sand or topsoil. There are plenty of farms down close to your house, so maybe you could work a deal with one of the farmers to take some of his cow poo and extra dirt off his hands. Free or low cost materials and the cow poo will help your grass grow like no one elses in the neighborhood.

do not rent a tiller for a whole yard. WOrk out a deal for a tractor or something. I rented a tiller once and it will kick the shit out of you. it was a junk tiller. I wouldve been better off jabbing the ground with a fork.

plant some cactus's or roll out some indoor/outdoor green carpet j/k Your gonna need to spend a few bucks to get this done.

the best thing that you can do is bog the whole yard...that will losen all the dirt and uproot the weeds and grass.after everything is "turned over" (now this part sucks) pick up all the rocks.go back over it with the disk until the big clumps are gone.after all that is finished take a drag hair over the plowed yard...that will get alot of the weeds and grass.then spread your seed (kentucky 31) and fertilizer (i suggest 10-20-20).be sure to spread straw so it all dont wash away.
you mentioned sod thats a great way but it is very high.

around here if you dont have the equipment a landscaper will do it for about 1100-2500.but maybe you can talk to a local farmer or a rental outfit may rent tractor and all.this will still cost a good bit.

Yep - I'm from Springfield. Fina, you from here? So you guys are saying there si no hope beyond tilling it all up and starting over? Remember - I'd like to sell the house next summer or so, so I don't want to put any money into it really. Is there nothing I can do for cheap that will at least help the yard?

Bob,

We'd move to a bigger house down the street - lol. Actually I just want a full finished basement. Need somewhere to put the enormous powerlifting gym.

you can always try a plugger (not an airiatior) it will pull big plugs of dirt out.then spread your seed and fert.that may help get it thicker.

Sounds like a good plan and will allow plenty of space for the little Animals when they come around.
