Google advertising executives helped Mexican pharmacies, including fictitious SportsDrugs.net, sell steroids to U.S. customers via AdSense. Google did not introduce or deliver pharmaceuticals. But the government accused Google of being an accomplice to the crime by allowing steroid pharmacies to advertise on Adsense. The government felt Google’s role was similar to that of companies that actually shipped illegal drugs. Such a position on accomplice liability could have been open to challenge if the case ended up in court. Instead, Google forfeited $500,000.
