Moonshining with Icky

It gives the liquor that special something...

Yessir. Yellowstone in early June. Going to fly into Salt Lake City, convert to Mormonism and take several wives. They'll think I can't keep up with them all sexually... But my tren thinks otherwise.

I've never been to Yellowstone so I'm excited. I went to the Grand Canyon last year and it was mind blowing... I've been reading about people dying out there recently and I can honestly see why after my experience there. I had always assumed there were some barriers to the ledges but it's wide open and people do fall over. About 4 per year actually. I went out to horse shoe bend and antelope canyon also... What shocked me the most about those areas was just how absolutely desolate they are. First time in my life I've pushed the seek button on the radio and the stations just went in circles picking up nothing or occasionally a gospel station. Quiet car ride to be sure. Breath taking scenery though.

Yellowstone trip is all I really have set in stone at the moment. I want to go to DC next weekend to see the Cherry Blossoms if they're still in bloom.

Thought about Jamaica or Puerto Rico also... Might try to hit one of them. Tossed Cuba around as a possibility too. I will travel to the beach pretty frequently starting in a few weeks.
Awesome. I live in a remote area like you describe. Seek button is useless. Both FM and am. Lol.

Grand Canyon is a great time. You will enjoy.

Have you been to the Big Bend area of Texas? If not you should. It is amazing. Let me know if you decide to and I will give you the guided tour.

Good luck with all those wives. LMFAO.

I'm really curious how this cherry shine turns out. I think the rye is a good call... I would be worried about it coming out a little too reminiscent of cough syrup. The rye should give it a little spice and depth.

Are you going to sweeten it on the back end?

I didn't even think about a cough syrup flavor lol. Hopefully it doesn't come to that! I'm not really doing anything special with the recipe. I am however trying to figure out how to grind up a few lbs of rye. I think 6lbs is around a gallon. I have a ninja blender haha

They make grinders that you attach a drill to. I'm not sure if they're reasonably priced...

Look up a homebrew store in your area... They often have a mill at store you can use, 6lbs would probably take them like 30sec. Or you can buy premilled rye.

Like oatmeal, rye becomes heavy and sticky in the mash. When combined with a typical barley mash one can expect a very dense sticky Mash. Like wheat, rye comes in hulled form. The lack of a hull, combined with rye’s high water retention capacity, can create a very sticky mash prone to setting.

Edit:
A quick Google search yielded me these results...

Rolled rye, available in bulk at health food stores and grain suppliers, is also a fine, inexpensive form of rye. During the rolling process, the rye is flattened under hot, heavy rollers. The heat and pressure from the rollers gelatinizes the rye starch, thus eliminating the need for pre-cooking the rye.

I watched a YouTube video on mashing for liquor that was really interesting. The mash got so thick that the guy was having trouble even stirring it.

However, after the enzymes had worked off the starch, it was thin and easy to work with.

The rye has to be germinated and then killed and dried before you grind it up.

You ever done this? I've seen guys do it with a wet burlap sack in the sun that looked really effective. I wonder if just a brewing bucket with water would work also?

I'm wondering if I need to germinate the rye at all for this batch. It's mostly a flavor profile addition ime. There is enough sugar in this recipe to kill a stadium of diabetics so the yeast will be happy. I found a few places online that sell germinated rye but the price jumps up quickly (not anything outrageous but a decent jump)

Can’t wait for this to be done!
Me either lol. It's on ice for now, life is getting in the way. Work is starting to explode for the spring season. Hoping to mash in this weekend or next.

Nice pics that you sent btw. Glad to see the buildout coming along!!
