Moonshining with Icky

Checking back in on an amazing New England afternoon, perfect football weather! And the Pats are in Mexico, fuck...

Well, we have a moonshine update! I've received the parts to the still and to the best of my ability I put it together. Please folks, keep in mind I program audio video for a living, not well versed with this stuff so please be kind!!

Total time investment so far is about 3.5 hours. Low to intermediate skill level needed. I followed the videos on the clawhammer website and it went pretty smooth. So far so good!! :)

Things left to do:
Attach hose inlet and outlet
Clean still and reflux condenser
Test run with water
Fix any potential problems
Make mash
Distill mash

Mashed in. Easy recipe here, sugar wash with high yield yeast, some boiled down raisins for nutrient.

5 gal total
Yeast
7/8 lbs sugar
1 lbs raisin

I've never used a regular food as a nutrient. I usually use a store bought nutrient so this is a new one for me. I'll be running the still with water in it today. Time to make sure this rig works as needed.

Happy New Year's Meso.

"Icky's Moonshine" ? o_O :D You take the first drink brother...:p:p

I could probably use this 'shine to make Dab hash instead of Everclear . Should work...
I can get as high as 160 proof, with my old setup. I'm guessing it will take 2 runs to proof that high with this new one, flavor should be clean and easy to drink, or use for other purposes...

I have 10 lbs if copper mesh to stuff in my reflux. Kinky!!

I've used raisins and orange zest as the nutrient in a mead recipe once. Worked out just fine.

Buy a couple bottles cheap wine, they will be about same prrcentage as your mash around12% . run it and toss it all, good for that first initial cleaning. Cleans better than water, and closer simulation to actual brew. You have get water alot hotter.

Having a buddy that homebrews beer/wine/cider helps too. My brother in law is always getting failed experiments from a friend of ours that need distilling for a quart or two in exchange.lol

Distilling for consumption is very much an art. My respect to those keeping this tradition alive.

no joke, cleaning flux out of a still sucks balls, especially when cold!! I'm waiting on a heating blanket for my propane, it's too damn cold outside to run. Freezing up and all that, had to stop my test run short. What about the wine helps so much?

Its basicaly like making a regular run on a fresh new still, helps get that flux taste out, dont drink it though. Makes good lighter fluid. follow with a good tomato sauce washout on a copper still. Just a tip some ol' timer gave me. There used to be a realy good site
Distillers.org yet i cant find it anymore.it was full of info

I know not to run anything you want to drink the first or second time you use the still. I used a bunch of tomato sauce when my dog chewed up a skunk. That was miserable.

I've used some regular detergent with hot water twice so far. I also have a cleaner that's supposed to be good for the copper.

So excited to use real copper lol
