MP's PL Meet Training Log

Well it sounds like you are over what ever had you down and thats great to hear. Looking forward to see what you can really do and learn from it.

12/19

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x330, 1x357, 2x2 320
pull throughs 2x15 130, 12x140, 12x150
hip flexion 3x12 30

Didn't feel quite as good as yesterday but still far better than any other day this week. 357 wasn't fast but wasn't a grinder either. Only two backoff doubles again today as I'm easing into the Bulgarian method to give my shoulders a break and due to still not having any idea what had me so knocked out earlier in the week.

12/20

paused close grip bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x335
face pulls 10x90, 100, 110
bent rows 3x8 225
weighted spread eagle sit ups 2x20 45
ab pulldowns 2x15 120, 12x130

Solid morning session had at least another 10 in me on close grips which is a good sign as my max close grip is generally very close to 90% of my max bench. May come back with a late afternoon bench session working up to a max triple depending on how the rest of the day goes (just for Brutus).

12/20 session 2
paused bench 5xx145, 5x195, 3x245, 3x295, 3x305,3x315

I do pull ups between sets of bench. If you have an unfinished basement you won't find a better pull up bar set up than this and it costs about $10 to make.

12/21

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x330, 1x358, 2x2 320
light sumo pulls 6 sets of 5 from 225 to 365
GHR's 2x20

Thought I might go for 360 today but 330 didn't move quiet as fast as I was hoping so I settled for going up one pound from yesterday to 358, not fast but not a grind. Yesterday's double benching session probably took a little bit of a toll today which is fine.

Since the sumo pulls are only for assistance work and last week was a complete cluster fuck with me pulling from a bad position which does nothing of benefit I went lighter today and made sure my set up and pulling position was good.

How long do you wait between sets when you bench with reps like this?

12/22

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x330, 1x360, 2x2 325
weighted dips 15x +45, 2x12 +90
bb curls 12x95, 10x115, 8x125, 6x145
dumbbell curls 10x50, 9x60

Good session today. 360 moved the way it should which is nice because in the past Monday's have been tough on me doing the Bulgarian method for benching as the way I have it set up Monday's are the sixth straight heavy bench day before a one day break each week. Based on today my current max should be right around 375, 25 more to go in the next six week. Hopefully I can get my pulls moving in the right direction and I should be in good shape come meet time.

12/23

deads after w/u 3x440 speed deads 3x3 365
power shrugs 3x5 315
stiff leg deads 3x5 245
bent rows 3x5 245
underhand lat pulldowns 3x5 230
good mornings 3x5 185

My son is sick and I think I'm trying to fight it off as well. No energy today but luckily week 5 of the Coan deadlift program is a backoff week so I got everything done as programmed although I was taking some lengthy breaks between the sets of pulls. Will move the weight up on the assistance movements next week didn't want to push it too much today.

12/24

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x330, 1x362, 2x2 325, 1x335
reverse grip OHP 10x95, 115, 2x8 135
side laterals 3x10 35
ab pulldowns 2x15 120, 12x130
hanging leg raises 2x20

362 could have moved faster but it wasn't bad. Moved the backoff sets up another 5 pounds. Merry Christmas to everyone.

12/25

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x335, 1x365, 2x2 325
squats 10x 135,185,225, 7x275, 4x315, 2x365
leg curls 10x90, 10x100, 9x90
GHR's 2x20

Didn't feel like messing with the fractional plates so I jumped straight to 365 today, it wasn't a competition pause but it went up easily.

Almost forgot to mention got a pair of SBD knee sleeves from my wife for Christmas.

It's like stepping up from a 4 cylinder to an 8 cylinder from my old Tommy Kono's, one of which had a small tear in it.

12/26

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x335, 1x367, 2x2 330
pull throughs 12x130, 12x150, 10x160, 9x160
hip flexion 3x10 30

Better pause today on top single and it moved pretty fast. Moved the backoff doubles up another 5 pounds. On a good rhythm with the bench program now which I have found happens with this program. Moving up a couple pounds each day without any near grinding reps and so far no elbow or major shoulder issues.

12/27

paused close grip bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x330 no pause 1x350 PR
face pulls 10x90, 100, 110
bent rows 2x10 225, 2x8 245
spread eagle situps 2x20 +45
ab pulldowns 2x15 120, 12x130

Close Grip day. 330 paused went up easily enough that I decided to go for a PR at 350 which was done without a pause and went up without too much of a fight as you can see below.

12/28

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x335, 1x370, 2x2 330
sumo pulls off 2" blocks 5x315, 2x3 365, 3x405, 1x445
GHR's 2x20

Good speed on 370, pause probably wouldn't have cut it in competition. Because of that on the second backoff double at 330 I did both reps with a 2 second pause. Definitely a good pressing week. Key now if to keep the shoulders feeling good for the next five weeks,

12/29

paused bench 5x145, 5x195, 2x245, 1x295, 1x345, 1x372, 2x2 335
dips 15, 13x+45
pushdowns 12x80, 10x90, 8x100
bb curls 12x95, 10x115, 7x135
dumbbell curls 2x10 50

Legit pause on 372 and it moved well. Would have been good for 380+ paused today. Added five pounds on the backoff doubles today. Went light on the dips and stopped after two sets as they just didn't feel good today. Did a couple of sets of strict form pushdowns to wrap up the triceps work. They don't need much anyway with the daily heavy bench work/

Looked back at my log today and I'm still a few pounds behind where I was one year ago today benching, The differences are I started the Bulgarian method a couple of weeks earlier last year and was already starting to have both elbow and shoulders issues. Ultimately I stalled out with a top legit pause bench last year at 382 and a shorter paused 385 and ended up getting 374 at the meet. Looking back I was also doing way more backoff sets last year and doing them heavier than this year sometimes working back up with singles into the 360-370 range. I think all of the extra heavy work was more than my elbows and shoulders could take. I've been tempted to throw in extra backoff sets during the past week but with the max moving up every day and having no major physical issues I'm not going to change anything for the time being.
