Pressure cooker for sterilizing vials

Hoo boy... I wouldn't recommend this as anything put through an autoclave is considered medically sterile and proper lab practice would never place it in a solvent or solution to further sterilize. If the pressure cooker isn't killing everything, no point in using a pressure cooker.

I think he meant before, cuz that’s standard practice if your having to use an oven or something. Alcohol bath, rinse, heat to dry and further sterilize.
Your confident that alcohol is unneeded at these pressures? It doesn’t sound like something they would do in the pharmaceutical field, using alcohol I mean, but home brewing I’m just trying to cover all my bases....
I’ve heard people say they do alcohol bath then Distilled rinse to remove the film that dried isopropyl leaves, then heat or autoclave.... you never do the isopropyl bath before you cook your vials? Not saying one or the other is right, just trying to clarify what is being said in terms of the order of operations for my own understanding.

Ah, I mean after. I used to hear people say to sterilize needles before using. There's some weird advice out there. Before is great.

The problem is that autoclaves often leave the items placed inside a bit wet.
That moisture will show as cloudiness in a vial full of oil.

You can also BRIEFLY flame the vials to evaporate the moisture.
Even if the vials aren't made of heat resistant glass, they withstand being flamed BRIEFLY.

True, I've never used a pressure cooker for vials so I haven't had to deal with that.

Ya well, I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Good vials. They are cheap as fuck. And autoclaves have a drying cycle at the end. Pressure cookers don’t however, but it wouldn’t really take long to gettem dry, if you cap em with tinfoil and leave it vented before you pressure heat then, you can oven them to dry em out the last bit and still keep the sterility inside maintained, I believe.

But I’m aware of that issue and have researched a solution. Thanks for the productive thread guys. Good shit. I appreciate it.

I ended up getting a 16qt presto pressure canner/cooker with gauge which goes up to 20 psi before it gets into the red zone closer to 25 I believe. So that should get enough pressure to sterilize. I got the bigger one so I can sterilize my equipment Also,as well as vials and any other glassware I might need. I figured if I’m gonna try to be sterile as I can, then I should be STERILE AS I CAN.... It’s not electric, needs a heat source but it operates at a much higher pressure than most the electric ones from what Ive read. And there is a TON of room in this thing. plus in was only like 65$ brand new and the electric ones like half the size are up to twice that if not more. Seemed like a good choice. Got a rack for that bitch to keep things a few inches off the bottom.... pretty hard to find actually, they are sold out of that model absolutely everywhere. They only have little ones without gauges at most places. But thanks for the info, guided me in the right direction!

So.....get it up to 15psi then let it go for 20 min, seems to be the recommended pressure and time for sterilization. That sound about right, to your knowledge?

Sounds good. Remember that it's 20 minutes once you reach 15psi, and lower heat to get there or the cooker will start to bulge. Also if you don't have enough water in there you'll ruin it.

So slwowly bring it up to 15, let it run at 15 for 20 min and let it cool for 30 ish. And make sure enough water is in there. I’m sure it will say in the manual a range of how much water relating to how much time/pressure. What do you think. A couple inches of water? The rack I have is about 2.5-2.75 inches off the bottom. Is that enough to get enough water in there??

Yeah about 2.5-3 inches of water. Once it's hit 15 for 20, let it cool naturally before you open it up. You need to create a clean box of some kind, either a legit one or one you've made or else you'll lose sterility. 35% hydrogen peroxide is an excellent cleaner for said box, or you can buy pre-made solution.

Ya that’s my next project. I’ve been looking at different designs that people have successfully built and used. Are you talking full on sealable bio clean box with the gloves and all, Or Are u referring to a flow hood to keep the air free Of all contaminated particles when dispensing?

:D:rolleyes:
Your question was about pressure cookers instead of autoclaves to sterilize vials, yes I use it and I posted a study showing how it works. Did I miss something?
Yes.... You missed everything because you didn’t read anything but the thread title. That wasn’t the question, That is the thread title.......so now that i know for sure you in-fact didn’t read any of the thread other then the title (which isn’t the question), I would recommend in the future you read the thread (not just the title) before posting so you have a frame of reference. Have a good day! :D
