Protein powder vz real food

I see so many ads advertising all sorts of protein drinks and how these drinks are the reason why pros look the way that they do. I have some friends that drink as much as six of these drinks per day and they tell me that shakes are better than food for growing muscle. i found this crazy to believe! for a start these are not for meal replacements but these guys seem to live on them.

i my self have added 2 - 3 protein shakes in with my diets when training.
I have just ordered some supps which i didn't want to name as (DR JIM may think im shilling) the next 3-4 months im going to be aiming in using real food to my existing diet. i am using free range egg whites and Oatmeal peanut butter this will be replacing my protein powder as these egg whites 11.2g per 100ml which is a decent amount

what are your thoughts. and which do you prefer?

Animal protein is superior to protein powder supplements. There is no doubt in my mind. That's not to say protein powder supplements can't and shouldn't be used though. They should just be used as intended, to supplement your diet. I drink 2-3 per day but if you removed them from my diet I would still be pretty close to achieving my daily protein needs. Not all protein powders are equal either, I have read that some powders contain substances that aren't digestible for people causing it to basically rot and ferment in your gut, lovely right? If your friends complain about bad gas and upset stomach you will know why...

i prefer to eat my protein, i do have 1 shake a day and that's post workout. in the past i have done the whole 4-5 shakes a day in worked my diet around them, but i honestly feel better eating to get my protein down.

I have a shake in the am and post workout (pm) 120g total

I drink a shake immediately after each workout to get quickly protein me. Not all protein powders are created equally. Some brands amino spike which on paper appears to contain more protein than actual.

The worst I've tried is musclepharm combat which I got from Costco and it gave me diarrhea, gas and bloat. And they amino spike. Potential class action lawsuit.

MP has been garbage since day one

I'd be interested to see someone that tried a cycle on powders and pills only.
Common knowledge says its stupid but the macros & micros would all be there, all the essential aminos too.

Just lots of wpi, dextrose, some fibre and a solid multi like animalpak.

On another board they discussed its potential but no-one was game to try it.
Neither am i.

But if it succeeded it may just open up the door of excuses for lazy dieters to just have shakes 8 times a day...

Muscle feast makes the some of the best proteins IMO.

If im super hungry, id eat food instead. If not, i can do half and half. 3 shakes and 3 meals.

Macros are there but I am not sure that micros are, however I have cut on shakes and minimal food for months once, using ephedrine then clen, never lost strength even gained a bit on bodyweight exercises (obviously because of weight loss) and looked my best back when I had not used actual AAS, I believe I have read whey protein is actually one of the best in terms of digestion. Right now about 1/2 of my protein intake comes from whey powder.

I make all my shakes with whole milk and peanut butter. (Usually 2 servings) I just bought some universal carbo powder.

1 in the am about an hour or two after breakfast, 1 after work(post workout usually) and a casein blend before bed.

My diet has gotten much better over the past couple months. Chicken, lean ground beef and turkey, and more chicken. You've got to eat to grow.

Food all the way imo, only time I really use protein drinks is right after a workout if I'm not going to be able to eat something substantial soon.

cost would add up over the year though hey?

To be honest I've never figured the cost out. But I buy wholesale powdered Gatorade with amino acids and sip throughout the workout. The electrolytes are what I'm looking for in the Gatorade compared to dextrose alone. I'm thinking the cost to benefit weighs on the side of Gatorade but I could be wrong just my preference.

I'm with you until it gets to the need for fast digesting carbs. It's the exception to the "food is superior" rule IMO.

There is no need for fast digesting carbs.

Maybe not a "need" but I decided to see how my performance changed with the addition of fast digesting carbs during the workout. The results spoke for themselves.

What are your thoughts on spiking insulin with fast carbs though? Again, not a need... But beneficial none the less wouldn't you say?
