Rodgers road to recovery

Saw the surgeon today for a follow up and didn’t have great news he doesn’t think I can rehab him the knee anymore with Physio alone and he said I should be happy if I get back to being able to do body weight exercises but he doubts I’ll ever push weight again with it and he said skiing probably will never be the same again as he doesn’t think I’ll be able to control that leg without the support of my other leg so maybe I’ll only be able to snowboard from here on out. I snowboarded for 20 years too so not a huge huge deal but I’ve got about 15 grand in skis and ski gear so ya know that would suck if I can’t use that anymore and I’m not someone that can sell things like that
That’s sucks ass man. You never know, doctors are wrong all the time. I wouldn’t get rid of shit until I knew I couldn’t use it anymore.

Even if I can’t use it anymore I’m not willing to get rid of my shit I love my shit too much. I’m hoping he’s wrong but unfortunately he is “the guy” on the western side of Canada to get knee stuff done and in conjunction with his colleague who specifies with top level athletes and CFL players hopefully they can figure out some way to bring my back to 99.9% I’m not being greedy and asking for 110% just 99.9:D

Little natty update emphasis on little. Been on a pull up and bench press only thing for 10 weeks and only eating one massive ass meal a day around 5-7pm. Calories about 2200-2700 in that meal. Current morning weight 173 (picture taken this morning after scale). I’d like to lose about 10lbs and hold it there until I can do full workouts again then do a super slow and controlled bulk 300-500 calorie surplus on lifting days 100 calorie surplus on non lifting days. I’ve got all the knowledge and I’m assuming it’s going to come like noob gains with perfect form (yes I have perfect form for everything I am not dulisional ;)). If I feel I plateau too early or that I won’t be ready for ski/snowboard season and it’s a muscular thing ima hope on a low dosage cycle in late September early October.

Big big day for me today! My medial quad head on my left leg started firing again! When you don’t use a muscle at all for 11 weeks when it does fire it’s pure euphoria. How? I went biking and decided if I’m getting a surgery either way I’m going to go until I can’t handle the pain anymore just so I could pedal my mountain bike cause I love it so much, about 3/4 up the mountain my legs were both on fire and all of a sudden boom it just started firing and making pedalling that much better. Also bad on my part but once I got to the top I didn’t want to take the lame gravel path down so I picked what to me is a stupid easy trail and flowed on down it PASSING PEOPLE!!!! I may not be able to walk without a brace but brace on I’m pedaling a bike and as long as there’s no lateral movement in the activity I do there’s minimal pain it’s just a burning sensation. So anyways writing this on an endorphin high so sorry for the ramble. Bu ya super fucking good day. I’m up to 180km this week riden combining the trail ride Friday and today and my stationary bike work. Usually around this time of year I’m a 400km+ a week so still not quite able to go out as much as I’d like but better then stupid Netflix and dying while I lay in bed.

Fuck time flys didn’t realize it’s been 3 weeks since an update already. Still hitting physio harder then anyone has ever hit physio before I spend 2-3 hours doing physio stuff a day then I either go out for a bike ride 20-50km depending on if it’s a road ride or mountain ride or I’ll go to the gym for an hour and a half. When I’m home after biking or the gym I use my Graston tool on everything I worked that or anything especially tight then I toss on the ol powerdot machine (I am fucking obsessed with this thing) and I’ll do a knee health zap mode then I’ll do it on my quads then hamstringns then calves then front of tibia then ankle and foot I spend about 2-3 hours a day reading and planning and working on developing my product while it does its thing. Literally an amazing investment for me as I have been trouble staying still long enough to read anything effectively so it’s nice that it feels like I’m doing something physical while I read. I’m back onto tracking all my macros but still only eating one big meal in the evening (2800 calories - 3200 calories depending on how many hours I ride for every hour gives me an extra 200 calories even though it burns about 500 on the low side). Currently loving the diet I’m getting leaner everyday it feels and my bench is fairly consistent at 225x8. I can now squat as long as there is a band pulling my knee forward and outward and I’m in the brace. I can deadlift but at about 225lb it’s just the o heavy of a weight baring thing for my knee.

Keep on keeping on meso bros. I’m going To make myself accountable for it here but I will not stop cutting until I’m dickskin lean and I’ll have a photo to prove it. I want 7 or 8% bf so that when I reverse diet I can be a sustainable 10%

Also just went over options for my knee and I’m going to end up living with only a partial MCL and PCL as the surgery is more then I want to go through at my age and I’m hoping I can stabilize the knee again in time with rehab.

WTF aren't you having knee stabilizing surgery, bc chances are the pathology will only worsen over time, regardless of rehab, unless you become a couch potato :)

Can you post or PM me your MRI results.

@RodgerThat ever since you mentioned this I've been working to get to 20 in a row. While I'm at work I only have these metolius rock ring and can not get passed 13 with these fuckers. Have you ever used these? There supposed to help strengthen your stabilizing muscle but I feel like the stabilizing get exhausted before al the others.

I’m bioanic now and this will be the style of brace I’ll wear for the rest of my life until technology is good enough to build me a new knee. Bought a road bike too so gonna get into that as I now can do a full pedal rotation, I can’t get read with any measurable force so it’ll be a few weeks yet till I’m riding the bike but those are the big things happening for me right now. Bench is moving good still and I do 150-200 pull ups a day now in sets of 20 so that’s going good. Been really busy lately fighting for medical coverage and disability but it’s all sorted now so gonna have more time to focus on the fitness side of things. I’m going to be writing programs all week for myself our boy insayan and a couple people on my powerlifting team. Keep grinding y’all

Shit ya man I’ve had a hangboard above my bedroom door since I was a kid and have a pair of those in my garage for my home gym. I’m getting freaky good at calisthenics now, human flag, type writer pull ups, plank hangs not a master of any but I can hold each for at least 5 seconds and don’t need momentum to get into them. Handstand goals are next for me

Nice man, the rock rings definitely help with improving the hanging planks. But hand stands are a lot of fun, It works and brings out a lot of muscles you never knew were there like upper obliques and serratus. I took a hot yoga inversion class one time, was a terrible idea sweat pouring into my eyes lol.

I just read through all this. I haven’t had a whole lot of time to search through the forum. Now I fully understand your comment from my thread. I think I’m gonna have to agree with @Dr JIM on this. I’m already 3 weeks post surgery. I know can’t even unlock my brace just yet unless sitting down but I have a real chance at full recovery. At least you have a cool story. Mine was lame as fuck

Saw another surgeon again today unfortunately not really great news for me, I nicked up too many things in my knee and it just seems like I’m on perpetual catch 22 of I need the surgery to work but if I get the surgery I wouldn’t be able to work because I’ll be too compromised so they keep telling me the next consultation is the last one before I get cut open but now I’m going for another MRI and to meet another surgeon who’s gonna try and fix me up. Unfortunately I didn’t just injure one thing so even though it’s an exciting story I wish I tripped tying my shoes and only did one ligament and call it good.

Update, knee still fucked. Fell off my bike and got a minor fractured my orbit bone but other then the black eye and inability to eat solid foods for a week it’s fine now about 2 weeks later, obviously pain is there but it’s very relative to me now seeing as the knee hurts like hell day in day out the face doesn’t bother me. Also seems as though I now have a new gal in my life it’s actually one of the girls I coach for powerlifting so that’s got me in high spirits all the time and we keep eachother on track for diet cause she competed in September and also knows a lot about nutrition.

Currently 168lb still holding fat in the lower back and belly a bit but quad separation in right leg is about as good as it’s ever been (we don’t talk about leg legs muscle anymore board shorts only basically). I’m only eating one meal a day at about 830-10pm between 2100-3000 calories usually closer to 2800 but all depends how many miles I put on my bike that day every hour of biking I add 250 calories to my total for the day.

Resting heart rate is 42bpm
Can squat 135x10 been stuck at that weight for about 2 weeks can’t go any heavier my knee don’t like it but anyone that says they can’t squat because of bad knees let’s have a conversation cause you fucking can.
Deadlift is at 385 which isn’t horrible but not good at all for me, it’s limited by two factors I’m only allowed to deadlift till I get the raw dull pain in my knee as per physio orders and any higher the 385 I can’t pull it without it being against my shins and then it gets caught under my brace so it’s a no go. I’ll be switching to trap bar deadlifts next week so I can keep progressing cause physio actually wants me doing them.
Bench is meh 1rm is 285 right now so about 20lb down since injury but I’ve also lost 20lb or body weight so all good.
Big thing for me is my calisthenics now, pull ups are in the 30+ range don’t know exactly how many I do as many advanced variations as possible with only bodyweight. Can now do handstands and working on HS walks and HS pushups but none of that lipping HS push-ups slow controlled up and downs. Shoulder health has been a huge focus for me as well as flexibility I do yoga with my girl 2-3 times a week and I stretch for at least 45mins every day bare minimum.

Still contemplating hoping back on the sauce in October time for an 8 week to build the left leg muscle back up but only if I’m completely cleared by physio to go back to skiing prior otherwise no sauce cause no point if I can’t ski. Ain’t so active on meso anymore but I do lurk follow a few threads lurking still, I don’t search around anymore cause I don’t know most of the guys here now but hit me with a tag in something or feel free to PM anytime if you have questions or wanna shoot the shit. I’m no longer actively going through threads to help people but will 100% share any little amounts of knowledge I have with anyone just gotta prompt me.

Are you going to get surgery? What the plan with the knee?
I don’t even know man. I don’t have an MCL but there’s a lot of other things going on in the knee and they dont really know if the surgery will be worth it cause they’d be chopping and slicing too much. I’m going to see the very best surgeon in Canada for sports injury and we will figure it out, my surgeon told my case worker the knee is outside of his scope and that it should be expedited to this man so in about 3 weeks times I’ll get to have a face to face with him. There is not anybody above him he is chief medical officer so that’s it if he doesn’t believe he can fix it I will be taking it upon myself and possibly coming down to you guys and paying privately or going to Europe to pay for it to be fixed. GH is a discussion I plan to talk to him about though as well at this point because I’m getting worn down day by day with this and willing to do whatever it takes to get back to work in the field.

Idk your injury to the fullest but the fact you’re still biking pulling and squatting is beyond impressive. Idk I’d be risking further injury but i completely understand. I’ve resorted to having leg day (singular) a few times because it’s killing me not to doing anything lower body

Dr. Here is stripping me of my natty card and injecting my knee now with sauce hoping it helps. I’m a endurance monster now I have so much stamina and power I’ve started using weed as a performance enhancer for pedalling and I absolutely fly no fatigue lol

Well got my PRP injections everything went goodish, a lot more painful then anticipated but I think I was underestimating the doctors warnings on it. Only 5 days after injections and I’m walking fine again and actually the added goop in the knee feels soothing now, it was burning fire for the first 2 days after injection then pretty stiff until the 4th day where I was able to start moving it more.

I’ve been back to somewhat respectable for normal people weight. Best leg session was 14 sets of 5 with 225 for squats. Anything heavier then 225 gives me too much of a explosive pressure in my knee which I think will start to disapate as the weeks progress with the PRP injections. I’m back to deadlifting without a knee brace as well slowly crawling back up but I hit 405 for a single @7RPE ive been working with higher volume lower weight for everything just to keep pressure off my knee still for the most part.

Lots of riding still my lactic acidosis threshold is better then my Ironman days now too prior to the injection this week I was on the pedals for 3-6 hours a day and I’ve now made my bike a singlespeed so I only get one gear going uphill or down so no option to have easy rides now every ride is training.

Also decided I’m not going to hit the sauce I don’t think it will be of any Benifit to my recovery as I’ve brought my muscle mass back up to a point where I can ski no problem and I can bike so no point for me. Also I’m 170lb on the dot after a complete 8 week reverse diet so I’m about 10ish% bf is day the best shape I’ve ever been even though I’ve been leaner and bigger this is my favourite look I’ve had because it’s 100% purpose built now. I don’t bench much anymore but I can still hit 225 for 5, my reasoning for not benching is I wear a pack for both biking and skiing and the smaller my chest and bigger my shoulders the better backpacks sit so I purposely have changed my top mass from chest to shoulders with good results I’d say.

Current goals:
Another 6 weeks of knee rehab until I’m back to work
Being able to use 275 for my working weight for squats
Deadlift 495 by Christmas and get a real PR by June 560+
Stay 170lb or less indefinitely. I have no desire to be bigger then 170lb every lb over is just extra weight to carry around at this point.

Bloody bummer RT :( I wore a brace like that for months post each of my knee surgeries. The second time around the GP wasn't sure if it was a tear until my leg collapsed sideways when I tried to climb up a flight of stairs :D The first injury both my acl and lcl were complete torn, so I coudn't even put weight on that leg. The pain was also considerably more intense compared to when the other knee disintegrated.

What was obvious to me was that I didn't stand a chance of walking properly without surgery. I'm surprised you're not under the knife already, tbh.

Slowly but surely working my way back, this knee injury has been one of the most difficult things to deal with for my lifting. I’ve gotten plasma injections and it’s getting better but I could still dislocate it as a party trick if I wanted to, that being said I also have increased its stability massively in the past 6 weeks with all the help I’ve been getting.

I don’t think I’ll get to test true maxes ever again so I’m now testing 7RPE 1rm as my guidelines for everything just so I can still 100% focus on stability and my form doesn’t shift at all.

So today I tested
Morning BW 161.8lb
Squat 305x1 @7RPE
Bench 250x1 @7.5RPE overshot this as speed did slow about 5 inches off the chest once my triceps became the main mover
Deadlift 405x1 @7RPE I might have been able to get 425 @7 but didn’t bother trying as my girl needed the Texas bar for her block pulls.
Push press 180x3 @8RPE I’m a little worried about trying anything heavy on push press just a lot of moving parts and if I put too much leg drive in it and click my knee out of place I don’t want to be standing on it wrong with weight overhead.

I’m still 100lb away from where realistically want to be for both squat and deadlift. Bench I was surprised with as I’ve probably benched 7 or 8 times in the past 3 months total so for my weight I wasn’t disheartened by it. Would like my bench to back in the high 200 low 300 but I would probably have to train it for that and I’ve been enjoying focusing on push press and handstands being my main push movement.

My knee rehab has almost come to an end and it’s about as good as it’s ever going to get I beat the all of my medical teams expectations but if I’m being honest I’ve failed my own. I thought I’d get back to 100% but after all is said and done my left knee tests to about 70% of my right, it’ll always be the thing that holds me back in the gym but at the same time it has made me learn to move in a completely different way and my mobility and daily life has improved vastly because I now focus on every step I take and walking properly is one of the best body control things I’ve ever done. Sounds stupid but nobody and I mean absolutely nobody does walk properly, gripping the ground with your toes every step engaging your arches always bracing your core it’s fucking hard but well worth it unfortunately it’s also nearly impossible to remember to do that all the time unless like me something goes into shooting pain when you do it wrong.

This log will be dead for a while and I plan to just use it as a check in point.

4 month goals
Sustainable 155lb BW
Squat 365
Bench 275
Deadlift 500
Push press 225

Yes I’m small as fuck now I know I’ve caring about size in pursuit of pure athleticism and I’m doing really good at that goal.
