"SLAP" tear in left shoulder

They did an Arthogram to eval your injury in 2012, how antiquated.

Yep that's a classic history even for Doctors, lol!

Just get it done you'll be glad you did but peeved it took you so long to do so!

So be patient with that rehab, I mean chances are you will have more function in 2 months than now!
Yes, I am sure i will be glad when its done. My wife is a PT and is eagerly anticipating the torture techniques she will get to use on me. Cant wait! Thanks Doc!

You shoul be in good hands then. Going from what Dr. J said , as well as my experience and others I know, the PT is as important as the surgery itself...if not more. It's amazing what advance in the knowledge of PT can accomplish these days. Use the time to focus on those wheels!

@Dr JIM

What impact has your slap tear surgery/repair had on your training? I know you said 6 months to be 80% and 1 year before you're 100%. Have you modified the frequency of over head work since having the surgery? Assuming you didn't eliminate overhead work all together.

I've recently graduated from a partial pec tear (elected not to have surgery 18 months ago) to a slap tear that's going to require surgery. Needless to say, I'm heading under the knife soon to avoid making the same mistake I've made with my pec tear.

Yes I have eliminated overhead exercises of the PUSH variety from my work outs.

Because those exercises are a probably the best means of ensuring your shoulder problems continue

Two injuries within 18 months of each other, both requiring high stress/loads means your WO routine is less than optimal.

I'd suggest a competent physical therapist review what changes should be made to diminish your injury frequency fella.

I agree I was pretty reckless or should I say I simply forgot that I was in the over forty club. I haven't introduced many new exercises in years. My routine/lifts have pretty much been the same over the past 24 years. All 24 years I was injury free from training. My form was slipping combined with heavy weight and increased frequency, I paid the price.

I'm aware of the exact lifts that caused my injuries. I went the PT route after my pec injury and they let me have it. Worked on form and technique as well as do's and dont's.

Indirectly my partial torn pec led to me injuring my shoulder. Having been cautious with my pec and training chest less, I increased my back/shoulder workouts. My shoulder injury was from overuse of overhead pulls and pushes more than anything else. As I said, I'm not getting any younger and my body took it upon itself to remind me. Now I have 4-6 months to kick myself in the ass, rehab and keep moving forward. Lesson learned.

The description of what predisposed you to a SLAP injury is classic as is your age for a RTC tear.

I'd strongly suggest you avoid any PUSH type shoulder exercises in part bc they are readily replaced by alternative movements which spare the shoulder joint.

That was my guess. Either rotator cuff or a labrum tear.
They did an MRI on the Rotator Cuff and it didn't show any MRI evidence of the rotator cuff tear, edema nor atrophy. It did show supraspinatus tendonosis. I'm going off memory here so I'm sure spelling is jacked.
My Ortho/Sports Med doc upon physical assessment diagnosed as a slap tear.

so,im back to my original post....sorry for the delay....let catch you up....

had surgery in January, when he got in there it was very inflamed, and wasnt as bad as thought, so he did a "bereavement"(spelling?) cleaned it up, NO anchors.

Everything went smoothly, out of sling in a couple days, started rehab, said id be back to good in 6-8 weeks.

Week 5 of rehab, during a light band exercise i felt it "POP", pain right back. Gave it a week of rest, went back and he said he could go back in, but up to me, that another image wouldnt show anything because of scarring/inflammation. IT hurt just like before, i knew it was hurt again.

he went in again in March, definitely a worse tear, again in same location(SLAP Tear). He put one anchor in it this time. Recovery was a little harder, a little more painful....

anyways, so its been 7 months since 2nd surgery and ive probably played 60 rounds of golf and am back in the gym(since about midJune),i rarely have any discomfort in the gym, although im a lot more careful of technique.Going well, knock on wood...

Glad to see your back and doing well. It's unfortunate he had to go back in for a second surgery but it's good that you're well on the road to recovery and back in the gym. Seems like there's quite a few of us facing the knife right now. I think there is another thread floating out there about RC or slap tears. God speed on the recovery my dude.

Btw ... How old are you?
