Start up home brew shopping list for supplies

  1. For your first couple batches I would stick with sterile vials and syringe filters. It's not hard to sterilize just very tedious and time consuming. You will also be doing small batches until you get your recipes and techniques down.

Skip the water bath and pick up an electric hotplate, they're like 20$. I would recommend some glass stir rods until you're ready to graduate to magnetic stirrer/hot plate which is amazing. You can get a Chinese one for 100$ or so, but I would spend the extra 80$ and get an american one rated for 2+ liters.

Get a graduated glass cylinder, they're 8$ and very accurate.

Maybe get a thermometer too that goes to 250+. You don't need much heat for most things besides bases and injectable orals if you're feeling crazy.

I would also recommend cavi wipes that are found in the sterilization section. A little overkill maybe but this is what we used in the hospital lab to kill everything.

When you graduate to sterilizing and filling your own vials get face mask too. Your breath is dirty as moldy dog crap.

Keep airflow down in your work area, germs and cooties are very light.

There's a popular site with 2 day shipping that you can get 10 packs of 60cc syringes from.

When you switch to bottletops get media bottles with 33m tops because there's caps with septas that go on them and then you can use 60cc syringes to transfer to vials. If you got exta cash to burn you can get a dispenser.

I use alconex (2 day shipping site) to wash my glassware and then soak in isopropyl alcohol for 30+ minutes.

Don't buy the oil off the research sites. I get my MCT oil from a local fitness store and its 15$ for 32oz.

There's probably tons more I could post but my brain is tired.

    Thank you @XmadXscientist
Learning about the exact steps for sterilizing things would be great. My plan was to do the first 1-2 batches with sterile vials and then move to sterilizing and crimping my own

  3. After washing everything and doing the alcohol soak I place all my vials and media bottles upside down on a towel to dry for a day or two. This is so nothing falls in there like dust. Next I cover them with foil and put them in the oven and bake at 500 for at least an hour. Don’t pre heat the oven or you’ll get moisture in the vials and have to start over. Also leave them in the oven to cool for several hours. You’ll want to go through this process twice then you’re good to fill them. Caps go in alcohol for 30+ minutes, I use 70%.

Almost my same exact procedure to the T (other than i only heat them at 350°) .. honestly its probably a little overkill because id bet my left nut a good majority of small labs arent taking all these steps to ensure sterilzation . But thats the beauty of brewing your own gear is knowing some asshole didnt skimp on sterility to save alittle time . Good shit bro !

Any recommendations on a hotplate? Medlab seems super expensive. Can I just get any digital one on Amazon or Walmart?

Oh and for syringe filters, whatman is sold out. There's several other options on medlab, any suggestions as to which one to go with?

Ebay/Amazon but keep on using Whatmans for reliability.

Yeah if you cant get whatmans at medlabsupply , go through medlabgear or ezvialz or where ever really but whatmans are what you want ... theyre top of the line , i wouldnt waste my time with another brand .

OK, I don't want to cut corners on the sterilizing part. I was planing to do .45 then the .2 just to be totally safe

  11. .2 alone is fine but doesn’t hurt to do both. I’ve used the other filters and would only recommend them if your filtering small amounts with a 10ml syringe by hand, otherwise you’ll probably blow them up from what I’ve heard. Whatmans are all that I’ll use going forward.

Any of the hot plates will be fine from amazon/eBay, I use a fristaden sh-3 that’s a tank.

How many syringe filters should I plan to have on hand? Can one filter do 80, 120, 160 etc ml? Or only 40ml? I'm not talking save it for later, I mean let's say I make 200ml test c in one sitting, how many filters should I plan to have?

You can push 200ml through a whatman , I push 150-160 through one and change it just to be safe but I'm almost positive they are rated to handle 200ml before you need to change um . I always grab a few extra just in case , but I've never had a whatman rupture on me so far ...

Just making sure if I only have a couple on hand I'll be ok. I keep seeing them sold in boxes of 50 or 100!

I was going to do a bunch of test, and 80ml deca so I was just going to grab 5 filters. And you guys think the .45 then .2 is a waste, so just do the .2

I dunno about anyone else but when i syringe filter anything i dont bother w/ a .45 I just use a .22 and call it a day . I use usp grade mct or mig840 though so pre filtering is pointless . Id say as long as your not using grocery store oil dont bother .

    Was planning on usp gso

  17. LordSamuilo

    LordSamuilo Member

Yeah you are fine with just .22 then .. if its usp grade its already pre filtered.

That's what I figured. It's pretty cheap on medlab. They have regular usp and then sterile, don't see a point in sterile if I'm filtering it

  19. 120 is the most I put through a whatman but you can go past that like Samuilo said. You’ll know if the filter is getting close to done because resistance will build up.

Yeah thats yeah i usually change em at around 150 give or take , thats usually when the flow slows down dramatically .
