As i said, the ketone at 17 position is reduced more than at 3 position because of higher reactivity. But that does not mean that the diol product is formed. Under controlled conditions there was 97 of testosterone formed with 7 precent diol product. You can increase the purity simply by protecting the 3-ketone and avoid unnecessary purification steps and lower purity
