Thanking God

How come when people win awards, games, boxing matches, etc. they always say, "I'd like to thank God for this."? What role did he play in the matter. When a child dies from cancer or a drunk driver kills a family of four, how come no one says, "I would like to thank God for this?"

Similarly, let's assume that God does play some role in it. Is it then safe to say that God loves some people more than others(aside from the obvious love for a, more or less, righteous, sinless person)?

It would seem that way since the winners have been blessed with more talent than the losers. Would it be safe to say that God loves retarded people less than geniuses since he "blessed" them with sub-standard intelligence and physical abilities and, hence, a horeshit existence?

Everyone has special talents or gifts. So the people at the very top, such as the Oscar Nominees, are already quite gifted and the winner is just one of those. People have the gift to lead, or to serve others, or for mechanical abilities, some are intellectual, some are philosophy graduates. ;)

Horeshit?? Did you mean whoreshit? or horseshit? Ditto on this one. I can't stand it when people pray at sports events either. Dear Lord, please give us the strength to rip those guys heads off and shit down their necks! Why in the world would God care about the outcome of a sporting event? Or a war for that matter?

I know! Bwahahahahahah! :D

Damn you, CyniQ! I was going to mention the war thing, too. I guess the recent skirmishes against the muslims can support Garyzilla's point, though. They prayed to Allah and we prayed to God and they lost. Obviously, God is the real god and Allah does not exist since the followers of God won and the followers of Allah lost. ;)

It's people like that who give Christians a bad name (not Gary). People who think because the US is predominantly Christian we're justified in stomping on the "heathen" nations. Don't you love it when bishops, pastors, and the like "bless" missles and warheads. With God's help we will do maximum damage to the unbelievers! Don't get me wrong, if some mofo jumps into my backyard he's getting 2 to the chest. But I'm not going to ask for God's help as I do it!

I was waiting for Tommy Franks to follow up "Lets roll" with "God wills it!" Kinda seemed like a crusade more than anything else to me......

The funny thing is, if you notice, 99% of the time it is a black person thanking god in those acceptance speeches or what have you, and its always the first thing they say.........I honestly have never seen a white person say it
I don't know what thats supposed to mean, but I notice it a lot

"I like to thank God for my increeeedible runnin speed, cuz my 5th grade education wadnt gonna git me no $8 million/yr contract."

That is what got me going, NEU. I saw that Reuben guy from American Idol thanking God for all that he has achieved. Also, Mexican boxers are notorious for making the sign of the cross before the box and then thanking their lord and saviour after the win.

grizz, people thank God for their life, and talents without either they would not be in the posistion theyre in today.

God loves all people of any race or creed,he doesnt play favorites,we have the right to make our on decisions in our lives, but we have to answer before him when time comes.

Sure maxx. If you believe in God then you must believe that at some point you will answer to him for your actions. Fine. What does that have to do with thanking him for giving you the ability to knock-out, out-run, or out-whatever your opponent? God given talent is a crock. God doesn't decide when you're born that you will be an athlete, or mathematician. In an immediate sense he doesn't have any involvement in your birth whatsoever. He set into motion the factors that allowed you to be talented but he didn't personally bestow your talents upon you. And he doesn't care if you win an Oscar or not.

i have no problem with thanking god. it's when seperate faiths claim fundamental differences when in the end, WE'RE ALL TALKING ABOUT THE SAME DUDE that kills me. regardless of the messiah debate, everyone should agree that it's all the same God. There can only be one creator and that's why encouraging religious difference is silly. All it's ever succeeded in doing is dividing people.

That's true of the "big 3"(Christianity, Judaism and Islam) but Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc. are horses of a different color, particularly Hinduism. Also, all poyltheistic pagan traiditions.

as far as a boxer or fighter thinking God or praying before a fight thats would be to me as meaning not getting killed or injured beyond expectation.i agree to that God wouldnt care about a particular sporting event, but he does love the ones in the said events.people in the awards ect... that thank God imo are thanking for general life, which without they could not have done anything.

now i do think that God does bestow every single person with a talent, something in particular that they can do better than anything thing else.now it may be running jumping singing loving speaking thinking ect...all those things are certain talents that humans pocess and God did give them to you.

Maybe you got a point there. My wife does frequently say "Oh, thank you, God!" when we're in bed. Maybe I do have a God-given talent.

Seriously, that matter is probably not debatable. It gives people warm, fuzzy feelings to think that God bestowed some special gift upon them. Everyone wants to believe their life has a purpose. If you do believe in God, then research the scriptures, you will see that you are not special. But God may have a place for you in His plan.

yeah, counting all the poly-theists out and looking @ the big 3 - think about all of the holy wars over the past 4-5000 years that were sparked by splilled over religious debate between the big 3. hell most lines on an atlas can be traced back and drawn as the result of either a christian-islamic orchristian-judaic holy war. i just believe that organized religion's most prolific legacy is racism and hate.

On what basis do you say "research the scriptures, you will see that youre not special?"
