After my hemmeroid surgery and feeling like Edward scissorhands got in my ass I began to reevaluate my d eadlift weight and frequencyThe posterior chain is overlapped by many upper back and lower body exercises. Getting direct stimulation from pushing and pulling movements. Its not that deads are terrible but goddam they fuck alot of ppl up! Unless its a competitive lift for you in a PL meet i propose, why do them? And that totally sucks cuz i was sold hook line and sinker with deads all my early yrs. Ride or die ya know? Till you experience that pain. Then it effects your training. Then you gotta make a change.
Good advice. Hardcore Mid to lower back pain ranks along with dental pain as the kind of pain you would sometimes consider getting the shotgun out & doing a Cobain, it's that fxxking bad!I found high rep work is what causes my nerves to inflame again and cause that dead lower back feeling with helpless pain that just makes you want to wish for a bullet. I can with stand 5 heavy reps. 3 is more ideal. 20 rep range im asking for a hospital visit. With all the damn problems ive had and all the help i seeked the front squat is what had the BIGGEST influence on rehabilitating it. Why? I figure the form of sitting almost completely upright in the FS is what helped me get back to fighting form. YOU CANNOT FS BENT AT THE WAIST. Like the BS forces you too. Healthier on the back.
The deadlift can be replaced man. We know deadlifts build a strong posterior chain. So lets break it down. Traps can be built with rack pulls. Which are done safely above the floor lvl. Where there is minimal lower back strain. Hamstrings can be built with high rep romanians and stiff legged deads and curls. Glutes can be built thru squats and kickbacks and a host of other compound movements. So if your forced to choose health over ego. Drop the deadlifts without question. I would bet if i gave you a back shot of mine including the entire posterior chain in the picture you would guess im a deadlifter
Except im not. Anymore.
Ive even been able to rebuild my back to the point of doing bent barbell rows with badass form. Approaching the vaunted 405 for reps.
I wouldnt have been able to do that had i still embraced the iron dogma of "deadlifts or die" .
Save your back man.
I'm aware of this I can tell yaOh, I should mention, if any of you played baseball, there are 4 additional concerns...your right & left rotator cuff & R & L labrum. If you are like me, the labrum and rotator cuff on your throwing arm are likely damaged (to what extent...no clue). Throwing a ball overhand is simply not a natural movement...just throwing it out there
Then throw like a chickOh, I should mention, if any of you played baseball, there are 4 additional concerns...your right & left rotator cuff & R & L labrum. Problem solved

Just had my L Labrum repaired in two spots. Haven't even finished PT yet. I'm actually on my way to the ortho for a check on progress.Oh, I should mention, if any of you played baseball, there are 4 additional concerns...your right & left rotator cuff & R & L labrum. I know, your a strong guy. Strong guys never know when to throw a changeup. Always the fastball. Till the fast ball destroys your arm. Then you will no longer be throwing anything.100% agree. I got my bent over Rows to 365, but I've changed things a bit. I don't use straps anymore, working on my Grip. So I don't Row over 275 now.
I would much rather do 3 exercises versus Deadlift and not walk normal. Trap bar Deadlift is ok, but that's more quad I feel.
Thanks for the pointers brother! Definitely changing these up.
Also, is this an opportunity to receive one of the famed Trukk tidey whitey shots?!

Danger. Danger. Danger....RANGER!!!!
Here is the deal with deadlifts. 90% of dudes have bad form. The two most common mistakes I see are folks looking up (rounding back) & pulling with arms...recipe for a back injury.
Yeah, my form isn't an issue... I really got into bodybuilding through powerlifting. My age, years of catching, and football are the problems.
You sound like me. Cat line, forklift etc sitting there and you just lift it and get it done. Worse mistake I ever made.I ended up fucking my back through work. Working the rigs you do some heavy lifting and when I started in the 90's it was prove yourself or gtfo and I paid for it in the long run. Was worried when i started doing deadlifts again but I keep the weight on the lighter side, more reps, so far so good
