90's was the best. Early 2000's had some great music, too.
To paraphrase Jefferson, finding good music is like finding diamonds in a dung heap. Lots of good music, but even more bad. Mostly the bad is what gets air time. No particular generation or genre stands out; metal to classic depending on mood.
For me late 80's early 90's especially for Rap and Rock

I remember in the late 90s, early 2000s suddenly every teenage male was dying their hair blonde, wearing a gold chain and a white tshirt and picking up lingo that ISNT part of their lifestyle.*cough*(eminem). Rap kinda took front stage and suddenly everyone was some thing they werent. I cant stand it. Its not real.
It just separated me more from everybody else. And i like that
The last of the real. Just stay your course. I have more respect for that than a flip flopper, flavor of the moment cheeseball who just wants to be part of the fun crowd.
You can tell REAL. Its unmistakable. That goes for any genre.
And sorry to you rap fans. Keep doing what u do. Just make it real

Oddly enough ( your avi), I remember the first time I heard vulgar....i played walk and mouth for war on repeat for weeks/months...idk...been a metal fan ever since...i was 11 when that came out
The true good music was from the 60s and 70s. Yes I am an old fart 
I was on a field trip in 5th grade and one of my classmates had a walkman (played cassettes, yes back in the day before CD's) and he said "I stole this tape off my older brothers dresser, listen to this..." And low and behold it was Metallica's first album "Kill em' all" , I never heard anything like it before. It sounded heavy as hell and full of energy!!
When I was in middle school my buddy had a CD and we were hanging in his room and he said "check out these guys" and it was Pantera. I thought to myself "Jesus I thought Metallica was heavy?? This shit is hard as hell!!"
Then after the Pantera phase and listening to Anselmos side project like Down and Superjoint Ritual I was introduced to my favorite band of all time, Lamb of god. I don't know if anyone will top Lamb of god IMO. It's in a class all to its own to me. No emo bullshit, no whiny lyrics combined with metal, just straight up hard as hell power!!!

My introduction to Metallica was similar. My first ever album was Metallica Justice For All. The tape. Back when tapes begat Cds. They are still the only band to ever sell a million copies WITHOUT any air play.
Obviously the times have changed. Back then 'tallica was deemed "too heavy for radio". Now its not an issue and alot more vulgar things are put out there. But they were and still are the poster child for everything that came after them. Just like black sabbath was the grandfather. 'Tallica is the daddy

Before bed I now listen to symphonic black metal, they intentionally use lo-fi production and a lot of the musicians are classically trained.
Its a weird off shoot of what sabbath started.
Also listening to a lot of opera like maria callais and old time blues and jazz when I'm not listening to 90's drum & bass electro-house.

I have a deep entrenched relationship with Metallica man. Different song for a different moment. They really helped me grow up and sort thru my anger issues and life issues.
The mere fact Hetfield writes all his own stuff is a testament to his musicianship and lyrical standard that will never be matched. That is a true skill. Most do not have the skill or creativity to do it and certainly not for 30 yrs
But i like the old 'tallica. When they were young, drunk, high and supremely pissed the fuck off. Just like Anselmo was. The good ol days
