It's an emotional appeal. Call it a fetus and it sounds unimportant, but call it a BABY and all of a sudden it sounds bad.

To whomever caught the memory thing-

Yes, I realize that it's a semi-faulty argument. However, an ebryo/fetus is far, far from a fully developed human being. An infant, though memory-less as an adult, IS a fully developed human being.

To add more to the debate and maybe slightly alter the course of this thread... What about "pulling the plug" on a "vegetable"?

This is analogous to abortion in that the individual on life support can not survive without the support of the machines. Likewise, the fetus can not survive without the support of the mother's body.

If you believe it's alright to "pull the plug" then I don't see where you can argue against abortion.

It ok to pull the plug if you have living will that lets you make the choice yourself...choose to do with your body whatever you want....it's not the same as taking a life that has just begun. Pulling the plug is sometimes thought of as the merciful thing to do and in some instances i agree...but don't compare it to a life that has'nt had the chance to experience. We can't sit here "HOLIER than thou" and say the world would be better without this yet to born human....would have been better without you?

I love it. I think it's great and should be practiced much, much more than it is. Any small, white trash town of 10,000 people should only have about 6000 since most of the inhabitants shouldn't have been born to begin with.

You can't call a fetus alive. It is not alive at all. Prior to viability, the fetus cannot survive on it's own. In one sense, a fetus is analogous to a parasite. It lives off of the host organism.
