On Thursday, the US Senate quickly passed the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, a bipartisan bill proposed by Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Tim Scott (R-SC), supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which aims to “codify the definition as one adopted by the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism.”

The Special Envoy, a project of the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act of 2004, uses the controversial definition of anti-Semitism produced by the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia which interprets anti-Semitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.” The examples of anti-Semitism published by the Special Envoy include “blaming Israel for all inter-religious or political tensions”, “…focusing on Israel only for peace or human rights investigations”, and efforts to delegitimize Israel by “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, and denying Israel the right to exist”.

According to Jewish Voice For Peace, the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which requires the Department of Education to redefine violations of Title VI rules of alleged discrimination, “will enable a crackdown against activism for Palestinian human rights on college campuses.” Kumars Salehi, a graduate student and member of Students for Justice in Palestine at UC Berkeley, tells Mondoweiss that “adopting the State Department definition would mean that, according to the government, anti-Semitism would include not only attributing most of the responsibility for Palestinian suffering to Israel, but also even the act of questioning whether Israel is a “democratic state”. “That’s what the last two bullet points of the State Department guidelines say,” Salehi argues. “These are mainstream and empirically grounded critiques of Israel within Palestine solidarity as well as broader progressive and intellectual circles. If the government forces universities to label and punish such critiques as bigotry, it would have the effect of silencing the growing plurality of young and old minds who are, thanks to the critical discourse on college campuses, thinking outside of traditional US parameters on this issue.”

Gabi Kirk, graduate student at the University of California, Davis, rank-and-file member of UAW 2865, and an alum of University of California Santa Cruz where she also witnessed the repression of Palestine solidarity organizing her undergraduate years, tells Mondoweiss that the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act “will have a definitive chilling effect on campus organizing for Palestinian human rights around the country.” Kirk explains that the bill’s reliance on the US State Department’s definition of antisemitism, “known as the “3 D’s” for saying it is anti-Semitic to “demonize of Israel, apply a “double standard” to Israel, or “delegitimize” Israel”, can be used “to criminalize organizing for human rights and criticism of Israel and its government’s actions.” Additionally, Kirk says, “this definition conflates the state of Israel with Judaism and Zionism with Judaism, despite the fact that the political movement of Zionism is not the same as Judaism as a religion. At a time when President Elect Donald Trump has called for criminalization of flag burning and called criticism of Mike Pence at a theater show ‘harassment,’ we need more speech protections, not fewer.” Kirk expressed dismay “that some of these bill’s supporters, notably the Jewish Federations of North America, want to criminalize free speech in support of human rights, but declines to condemn Stephen Bannon, Trump’s appointee who has a track record of fostering bigotry, white nationalism, and antisemitism.” “It is beyond hypocritical,” Kirk says, “to turn college students into criminals for exercising our free speech rights in support of justice, while ignoring the Anti-Semitism growing in the highest halls of power in this country.”

If the bipartisan Anti-Semitism Awareness Act were to pass, and thereby become legally enforceable, it would join a growing list of US legislation which targets Palestine solidarity efforts, including Senate Bill S6086 and Assembly Bill 8220, both of which have the intent of penalising those boycotting Israel. The advocacy group Palestine Legal reports that anti-BDS legislation has already been enacted in 13 states—the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act compounds the threat against freedom of speech, and, whether it passes or not, it highlights the mounting struggle facing Palestine solidarity activists and organisers. But as we’ve seen before, organisers are resilient, creative, and will respond to any threats against their ability to assemble and protest freely, all while expressing solidarity with communities impacted by hate crimes.

According to the latest numbers from the FBI, of the 1,402 recorded victims of anti-religious hate crimes in 2015 “52.1 percent were victims of crimes motivated by their offender’s anti-Jewish bias”—a confronting number marking a larger trend in discrimination and violence directed at American Jews. Since the election of Donald Trump, the targeting of Jews has come in the form of swastikas drawn across doors, graffiti reading “Heil Trump”, and xenophobic rhetoric from white supremacists—who are attempting to rebrand themselves as “alt-right”—all of which is undoubtedly, and understandably, terrifying Jews and minority groups across the United States. The response to this rise in hate crimes has been creative, and it’s included the creation of solidarity networks like the anti-fascist group ‘MuJew Antifa’, a organization of Muslim and Jewish activists who recently drove Steve Bannon out of New York. The Anti-Semitism Awareness Act offers no resolution to those most impacted by anti-Jewish bias and violence, but instead will undoubtedly work to undermine protected speech and do further harm to pro-Palestine organisers.

ADL’s Greenblatt is the one who needs to express ‘contrition’ for accusation of Keith Ellison

Jonathan Greenblatt

This is the latest in a series anatomizing the powerful construction of reality called Hasbara Culture by Yakov Hirsch. @yakovhirsch. You can see the full series here.

I have been writing about an extremely Jewish ethno-centric worldview that I call hasbara culture. This culture is constituted by a social construction of reality that experiences the world in very narrow terms. I have mostly used examples from the most influential hasbara culturalist in the U.S., Jeffrey Goldberg, the new editor in chief of the Atlantic, to illustrate this Jewish ethnocentric zealotry. What is problematic is not solely Jeffrey Goldberg believing the Jewish people are the best thing since sliced bread and his need to share that news every way he can. The trouble begins with his inability to realize that other people have entirely different and indeed legitimate experiences of the world, and that they are not fixated on Jews.

Which brings us to Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti Defamation League.

It is one thing for Jeffrey Goldberg to inaccurately assign Jew-hatred as motivation on the part of his political and ideological opponents. Goldberg’s agitation over the years was widely recognized as very self-serving: everyone understands that Goldberg is advancing his career and his particular ideological agendas when he clamors about anti-Semitism

HasbaraCulture-300x199.jpg

That is not the case with the ADL. The ADL has been sanctified in American culture since the days of the Leo Frank case. When the ADL passes judgment on someone, it is thought to say something more truthful about the accused than when Jeffrey Goldberg does so. When the civil rights/anti hate organization calls someone a hater, most people assume the ADL has a guilty party in the dock.

As an American Jew I am not proud to report that this is in fact not the case. The ADL can’t be relied upon to tell Americans who the Jew haters are. I have shown in my recent writings of example after example where Jonathan Greenblatt tars clearly innocent people as anti-Semites. I have argued these accusations of anti-Semitism have nothing to do with Jew hatred and everything to do with hasbara culture. Hasbara culture entails an ethnocentric experience of the world that very often does not reflect what actually is going on. It is only with the hasbara culture perspective that anti-Semitism is spotted.

In hasbara culture ”antisemitism” cases, non-Jews are just doing their own thing, following their own values and causes, and suddenly hasbara culture comes knocking. It was because of Mr. Greenblatt’s misunderstanding of what he was seeing that he maligned them. I encourage readers who want to understand this discussion better to read up on the individual cases. It is also important to be mindful of the different ways Greenblatt cultivates the sacredness of his world view, of hasbara culture: specifically, note how many times Greenblatt demands “contrition” when he addresses his innocent targets.

That is what hasbara culture looks like in action. For those paying attention, the one who should be begging for forgiveness is Jonathan Greenblatt for ruining the lives of good people.

Which brings us to the news of the day: the Anti-Defamation League’s attempt to thwart Keith Ellison from becoming head of the Democratic National Committee. The last we had heard from the ADL it had given the Minnesota Congressman a kosher certificate. Greenblatt informed the public that whatever misgivings he had about Ellison’s past he “appreciated his contrition on some matters.”

But now Jonathan Greenblatt says “new information recently has come to light” that “disqualifies” Keith Ellison from being DNC chair. This “new information” is a recording of Keith Ellison in 2010 speaking to a group of Muslim political supporters and urging them to organize to counter the political reality, that US foreign policy in the Middle East is governed by what is good or bad for a country of 7 million, Israel.

After hearing the recording, this was the updated Greenblatt statement:

Rep. Ellison’s remarks are both deeply disturbing and disqualifying. His words imply that U.S. foreign policy is based on religiously or national origin-based special interests rather than simply on America’s best interests. Additionally, whether intentional or not, his words raise the specter of age-old stereotypes about Jewish control of our government, a poisonous myth that may persist in parts of the world where intolerance thrives, but that has no place in open societies like the U.S.

The ADL is in effect eavesdropping on a group of politically-active Muslims speaking amongst themselves. If you listen in to the conversation this is a group of people who feel that it’s safe to let their hair down. Every group has a public discourse and a private discourse. We are listening in on a private Muslim discourse. Ellison says: we share roots with the 350 million people in the Middle East who are getting outweighted in US foreign policy by a country of 7 million, so we have to organize.

And this is where hasbara culture loses the thread. What is the political reality for sympathizers of Palestinians in that room? Why, it is no different from the reality expressed by Secretary of State John Kerry Sunday at the Saban Forum: That after more than 375 phone conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu, and after billions of dollars a year, and complete protection at the U.N, the U.S has little leverage or influence over Israeli bad behavior. And the people in that room, like many reasonable people around the world, believe that the Palestinians are the side of the conflict that needs relief.

The thing that hasbara culture is incapable of doing we must attempt to do: to role-take with Keith Ellison. What is his experience in the world? How much influence does Keith Ellison have in American politics on the Palestinian issue, where most of the world agrees with him, seeing a just cause? The answer is obvious: Ellison operates within an Orwellian political reality in which the Israeli “occupation” was too controversial for either political party’s platform this past election. His is a world where in the past few months he is the second influential black congressman to be “spied” upon: making a statement when he was completely oblivious to what hasbara culture deems to be “tropes” that are the subject of its holy war.

I’ve shown the hysteria in hasbara culture caused by the use of the word “termites” by Rep. Hank Johnson to describe settlement construction during a panel at the Democratic convention. Sadly, the reputations of Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia and Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota will not soon recover from ADL accusations of anti-Semitism.

It is worth emphasizing here that hasbara culture is not about people, it is not concerned with actual human beings. Hasbara culture is not even concerned with Jews or even with the state of Israel. Hasbara culture is a “social construction of reality” and its greatest concern is to propagate a self-serving ethnocentric narrative that is generated by an extremely ethno-centric Jewish experience of the world. To hasbara culture that social construction of reality is sacred. And it has been my project to show how this narrative has hardened into a reality for anyone who participates in our political life; and statements that create cognitive dissonance for that reality are treated as anti-Semitism.

So even if Keith Ellison were to repeat the exact words of a J Street critique of the “special relationship” in that recording, Hasbara Culture would come away thinking Ellison hates Jews. Because Greenblatt is so ethnocentric he experiences Ellison’s (accurate) vantage point about the place of Israel in American culture and politics as– fixated with Jews.

What chutzpah this Greenblatt has! He listens in on people talking privately, and he doesn’t like what

His words imply

and

Additionally, whether intentional or not, his words raise the specter of age-old stereotypes about Jewish control of our government.

Greenblatt isn’t claiming Ellison said something untrue! Just that his statements create cognitive dissonance in the reality he’s constructed.

Think how Orwellian hasbara culture is. He would like Muslims who are sympathetic with Palestinians talking amongst themselves to be mindful of what the conversation “implies” if Jonathan Greenblatt were sitting there.

Maybe Greenblatt & the ADL shouldn’t listen in on that Muslim conversation. How about the ADL just let Ellison be. He didn’t make this audio public. The ADL is the one spreading this story. And as for that conversation, Keith Ellison didn’t “imply” anything to the people in the room: he wasn’t hinting at some hidden meaning. Every person in that room has their own idea of why the US/Israeli relationship is as lopsided as it is. Just like non-Muslims and even Jews who pay attention to the subject have their own theories; because let’s not fool ourselves, it is a mystery to everyone. No one will overhear a conspiracy theory in that recording, about how Jews control America, no matter how many times you listen to it.

And I’m also willing to bet that whatever the truth is of the puzzle of the US/Israel special relationship, it’s much closer to what people in that room thinks than the story that the ADL demands everyone repeat lest they be labeled an anti-Semite.

Realize that this audiotape tells us nothing new about the man Keith Ellison is. We know who the person Keith Ellison is. The Jewish people who know him best are unanimous he is a “Muslim peacenik” as JJ Goldberg in the Forward called him.

I think there are a relatively small number of wealthy elites (world improvers) who have the means and motivation to screw with how things work in the US and most of Europe. They are neither all Jews nor a homogeneous group with singular goals. There is no significant "Jew conspiracy" to take over the world, but there do happen to be a lot of powerful people interested in one world government.

The anti EU referendums going through EU countries and the Trump win shows they are also not omnipotent, at least not yet. They influence the People through media, social networks and educational institutions by spreading propaganda and censoring alternative view points. Whenever possible they influence law makers against the interests of the People because they believe they are more qualified to decide what's good for them. I suspect none of them view themselves as evil or greedy, and most believe they are helping. A pox on the bastards just the same, though.

Congrats ur one step away from believing in the "Jew conspiracy" cause last year I was like oh only a few people run shit and there not Jews!

No single race or religion holds a monopoly on authoritarianism. It wouldn't matter if they were the only ones involved (they weren't). The number NOT involved exceeds the number involved by several orders of magnitude. To call it a Jewish conspiracy is moronic, especially when it includes a wish for the repeat of a movement that killed millions and left even greater tyrants in control of most of the world.

Was looking for some Israeli writers and news sites and found this interesting article written by Marcus Eli Ravage in 1928.

A Real Case Against The Jews

The following is an article written by an American Jew in 1928 : by Marcus Eli Ravage, reprinted from The Century Magazine January 1928

Of course, you do resent us. It is no good telling me you don't. So let us not waste any time on denials and alibis. You know you do, and I know it, and we understand each other. To be sure, some of your best friends are Jews, and all that. I have heard that before once or twice, I think. And I know too, that you do not include me personally - "me" being any particular individual Jew - when you fling out at us in your wholesale fashion, because I am, well, so different, don't you know, almost as good as one of yourselves. That little exemption does not, somehow, move me to gratitude; but never mind that now. It is the aggressive, climbing, pushing, materialistic sort you dislike - those, in a world, who remind you so much of your own up-and-coming brethren. We understand each other perfectly. I don't hold it against you.

Bless my soul, I do not blame anybody for disliking anybody. The thing that intrigues me about this anti-Jewish business, as you play at it, you make such fantastic and transparent excuses, you seem to be suffering from self-consciousness so horribly, that if the performance were not so grotesque it would be irritating.

It is not as if you were amateurs : you have been at it for over fifteen centuries. Yet watching you and hearing your childish pretexts, one might get the impression that you did not know yourselves what it is all about. You resent us, but you cannot clearly say why. You think up a new excuse - a "reason" is what you call it - every other day. You have been piling up justification for yourself these many hundreds of years and each new invention is more laughable than the last and each new excuse contradicts and annihilates the last.

Not so many years ago I used to hear that we were money-grubbers and commercial materialists; now the complaint is being whispered around that no art and no profession is safe against Jewish invasion. We are, if you are to be believed, at once clannish and exclusive, and unassimilable because we won't intermarry with you, and we are also climbers and pushers and a menace to your racial integrity.

Our standard of living is so low that we create your slums and sweat industries, and so high that we crowd you out of your best residential sections. We shirk our patriotic duty in wartime because we are pacifists by nature and tradition, and we are the arch-plotters of universal wars and the chief beneficiaries of those wars (see "The protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion".)

We are at once the founders and leading adherents of capitalism and the chief perpetrators of the rebellion against capitalism. Surely, history has nothing like us for versatility ! And oh ! I almost forgot the reasons of reasons. We are the stiff-necked people who never accepted Christianity, and we are the criminal people who crucified its founder.

But I tell you, you are self-deceivers. You lack either the self-knowledge or the mettle to face the facts squarely and own up to the truth. You resent the Jew not because, as some of you seem to think, we crucified Jesus but because we gave him birth. Your real quarrel with us is not that we have rejected Christianity but that we have imposed it upon you !
Your loose, contradictory charges against us are not a patch on the blackness of our proved historic offence. You accuse us of stirring up revolution in Moscow. Suppose we admit the charge. What of it ? Compared with what Paul the Jew of Tarsus accomplished in Rome, the Russian upheavals a mere street brawl.

You make much noise and fury about the undue Jewish influence in your theatres and movie palaces. Very good; granted your complaint is well-founded. But what is that compared to our staggering influence in your churches, your schools, your laws and your governments, and the very thoughts you think every day ?

A clumsy Russian forges a set of papers and publishes them in a book called "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" which shows that we plotted to bring on the late World War. You believe that book. All right. For the sake of argument, we will underwrite every word of it. It is genuine and authentic. But what is that besides the unquestionable historical conspiracy which we have carried out, which we never have denied because you never had the courage to charge us with it, and of which the full record is extant for anybody to read ?

If you really are serious when you talk of Jewish plots, may I not direct your attention to one worth talking about ? What use is it wasting words on the alleged control of your public opinion by Jewish financiers, newspaper owners, and movie magnates, when you might as well justly accuse us of the proved control of your whole civilization by the Jewish Gospels ?

You have not begun to appreciate the real depth of our guilt. We are intruders. We are disturbers. We are subverters. We have taken your natural world, your ideals, your destiny, and played havoc with them. We have been at the bottom of not merely the latest Great War but of nearly all your wars, not only of the Russian but of nearly every other major revolution in your history. We have brought discord and confusion and frustration into your personal and public life. We are still doing it. No one can tell how long, we shall go on doing it.

Look back a little and see what has happened. Nineteen hundred years ago you were an innocent, care-free pagan race. You worshipped countless Gods and Goddesses, the spirits of the air, of the running streams and of the woodland. You took unblushing pride in the glory of your naked bodies. You carved images of your gods and of the tantalizing human figure. You delighted in the combats of the field, the arena and the battle-ground. War and slavery were fixed institutions in your systems. Disporting yourselves on the hillsides and in the valleys of the great outdoors, you took to speculating on the wonder and mystery of life and laid the foundations of natural science and philosophy. Yours was a noble, sensual culture, unirked by the prickings of the social conscience or by any sentimental questionings about human equality. Who knows what great and glorious destiny might have been yours if we had left you alone.

But we did not leave you alone. We took you in hand and pulled down the beautiful and generous structure you had reared, and changed the whole course of your history. We conquered you as no empire of yours ever subjugated Africa or Asia. And we did it all without bullets, without blood or turmoil, without force of any kind. We did it solely by the irresistible might of our spirit, with ideas, with propaganda.

We made you the willing and unconscious bearers of our mission to the whole world, to the barbarous races of the world, to the countless unborn generations. Without fully understanding what we were doing to you, you became the agents at large of our racial tradition, carrying our gospel to unexplored ends of the earth.

Our tribal customs have become the core of your moral code. Our tribal laws have furnished the basic groundwork of all your august constitutions and legal systems. Our legends and our folk-tales are the sacred lore which you croon to your infants. Our poets have filled your hymnals and your prayer-books. Our national history has become an indispensable part of the learning of your pastors and priests and scholars. Our Kings, our statesmen, our prophets, our warriors are your heroes. Our ancient little country is your Holy Land. Our national literature is your Holy Bible. What our people thought and taught has become inextricable woven into your very speech and tradition, until no one among you can be called educated who is not familiar with our racial heritage.

Jewish artisans and Jewish fishermen are your teachers and your saints, with countless statues carved in their image and innumerable cathedrals raised to their memories. A Jewish maiden is your ideal of motherhood and womanhood. A Jewish rebel-prophet is the central figure in your religious worship. We have pulled down your idols, cast aside your racial inheritance, and substituted for them our God and our traditions. No conquest in history can even remotely compare with this clean sweep of our conquest over you.

How did we do it ? Almost by accident. Nearly two thousand years ago in far-off Palestine, our religion had fallen into decay and materialism. Money-changers were in possession of the temple. Degenerate, selfish priests grew fat. Then a young patriot- idealist arose and went about the land calling for a revival of the faith. He had no thought of setting up a new church. Like all the prophets before him, his only aim was to purify and revitalize the old creed. He attacked the priests and drove the money- changers from the temple. This brought him into conflict with the established order and its supporting pillars. The Roman authorities , who were in occupation of the country, fearing his revolutionary agitation as a political effort to oust them, arrested him, tried him and condemned him to death by crucifixion, a common form of execution at that time. The followers of Jesus of Nazereth, mainly slaves and poor workmen, in their bereavement and disappointment, turned away from the world and formed themselves into a brotherhood of pacifists non-resisters, sharing their memory of their crucified leader and living together communistically. They were merely a new sect in Judea, without power or consequence, neither the first nor the last.

Only after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans did the new creed come into prominence. Then a patriotic Jew named Paul or Saul conceived the idea of humbling the Roman power by destroying the morale of its soldiery with the doctrines of love and non- resistance preached by the little sect of Jewish Christians. He became the Apostle to the Gentiles, he who hitherto had been one of the most active persecutors of the band. And so well did Paul do his work that within four centuries the great empire which had subjugated Palestine along with half of the world, was a heap of ruins. And the law which went forth from Zion became the official religion of Rome.

This was the beginning of our dominance in your world. But it was only a beginning. From this time forth your history is little more than a struggle for mastery between your own old pagan spirit and our Jewish spirit. Half your wars, great and little, are religious wars, fought over the interpretation of one thing or another in our teachings. You no sooner broke free from your primitive religious simplicity and attempted the practice of the pagan Roman learning than Luther armed with our Gospel arose to down you and re-enthrone our heritage. Take the three principal revolutions in modern times - the French, the American, and the Russian. What are they but the triumphs of the Jewish idea of social, political and economic justice ?

And the end is still a long way off. We still dominate you. At this very moment your churches are torn asunder by a civil war between Fundamentalists and Modernists, that is to say between those who cling to our teachings and traditions literally and those who are striving by slow steps to dispossess us. Again and again the Puritan heritage of Judea breaks out in waves of stage censorship, Sunday blue laws and national prohibition acts. And while these things are happening you twaddle about Jewish influence in the movies.

Is it any wonder you resent us ? We have put a clog upon your progress. We have imposed upon you an alien book and an alien faith which you cannot digest, which is at cross-purposes with your native spirit, which keeps you everlasting ill-at-ease, and which you lack the spirit to either reject or accept in full.

In full, of course, you never have accepted our Christian teachings. In your hearts you still are pagans. You still take pride in the glory of the nude human figure. Your social conscience, in spite of all democracy and all your social revolution, is still a pitifully imperfect thing. We have merely divided your soul, confused your impulses and paralysed your desires. In the midst of the battle you are obliged to kneel down to him who commanded you to turn the other cheek, who said "Resist not evil" and "Blessed are the peace-makers". In your lust for gain you are suddenly disturbed by a memory from your Sunday school days about taking no thought for the morrow. In your industrial struggles, when you would smash a strike without compunction, you are suddenly reminded that the poor are blessed and that men are brothers in the Fatherhood of the Lord. And you are about to yield to temptation, your Jewish training puts a deterrent hand on your shoulder and dashes the brimming cup from your lips. You Christians have never become Christianized. To that extent we have failed with you. But we have forever spoiled the fun of paganism for you.

So why should you not resent us ? If we were in your place we should probably dislike you more cordially than you do us. But we should make no bones about telling you why. We should not resort to subterfuges and transparent pretext. With millions of painfully respectable Jewish shopkeepers all about us we should not insult your intelligence and your own honesty by talking about communism as a Jewish philosophy. And with millions hard-working impecunious Jewish peddlers and labourers we should make ourselves ridiculous by talking about international capitalism as a Jewish monopoly. No we should go straight to the point. We should contemplate this confused ineffectual muddle which we call civilization, this half- Christian half-pagan medley, and - we should say to you point- blank : "For this mess thanks to you, to your prophets, and your Bible."

I was suprised this morning on learning that this administration has really pissed off Israel in not vetoing the resolution condeming the illegal settlements in the west bank. I thought they had got it all by now. Merry Christmas & happy Hanukkah:).

Trump appoints ex-Israeli settler to oversee peace process
By Roqayah Chamseddine

Jason Greenblatt, the 49-year-old real estate attorney representing Donald Trump’s business conglomerate, has been named special representative for international negotiations which will include the Israel-Palestinian peace process. Greenblatt once studied at a religious school in the West Bank settlement of Alon Shuvot and may be the first leading adviser on Israel to a US President that's done guard duty at a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank “armed with an M-16 assault weapon.” In perhaps a sign of things to come Greenblatt told Israel's Channel 1, “[Trump] has gone on record to say that the settlements in the West Bank can stay…I personally believe that they should stay. I don't believe that they're an obstacle to peace."

Good idea.... This will straighten things out.:D

I guess this UN resolution is pretty huge. I say, come January 20th, the US should pull out of the UN. Kicked the UN of American soil. In watching some video on the situation I heard some interesting takes. The US pays about 25% of all the UN and the UN spends most of its energy worrying about Israel which is a tiny spec on a very large map. and the rest of its time the UN uses its resources attacking the US, it's allies and democracy. Problem is there are plenty of Americans who hate Jews including many American Jews. Can't wait til Jan 20th. Get this trader out of the white house and get back to making America great again.

Hear O Israel these parting truths — John Kerry
By Robert Herbst

John Kerry gives speech on Israel Palestine, Dec. 28, 2016

The most disturbing thing about the landmark speech that Secretary of State John Kerry just delivered is that the American political system is so dysfunctional that the truth could be spoken only after – not before – a national election, in the short period between the end of one Administration and the beginning of another.

Kerry delivered his “candid thoughts” about the Israeli Palestinian conflict in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bitter and provocative criticism of the United States for not vetoing the UN resolution reaffirming the illegality of Israel’s settlement construction and expansion: “Friends don’t take friends to the Security Council.” Kerry’s rejoinder to the Israelis and the American people, publicly before the world, was that “friends need to tell each other the hard truths.”

These hard truths remained untold for eight years because of fear: fear by President Obama and the Administration that the Israeli lobby, big American Jewish donors, and the American Jewish community was not ready to hear them; fear that speaking the truth would endanger Obama’s re-election prospects, and then Hillary Clinton’s. As a result of such fear, candor could be heard only very late – when the Two State Solution (“2SS”) is already in the grave, and when the incoming Administration is apparently resolved not to hear the lessons Kerry took pains to articulate.

Nevertheless, the word must be heard and heeded by Israeli, American and World Jewry. We would be exceedingly unwise to ignore them. So Hear, O Israel, these parting truths – hard as they are for many of us — from the peacemakers who tried so hard to move it from its disastrous path:

You are running Israel and Judaism off the rails. Led by the most right wing leadership in history, you are taking them to a one-state reality — a Greater Israel, in the West Bank — for the sake of ideological and religious reasons utterly disconnected from Judaism’s values and Israel’s greater interests in security and its future peaceful integration into the Arab world. In your single-minded commitment to settlement construction and expansion, you have increasingly consolidated control over the West Bank for your own purposes, reversing the earlier goal of permitting Palestinians greater control over their own lives.

You have transferred into the West Bank, the future homeland of the Palestinian people, 270,000 Jewish settlers since the Oslo peace accords were signed on the White House lawn, 100,000 since the Obama Administration began in 2009. And you have located these settlers, deliberately and strategically, in places which have made it particularly difficult to envision separating the two peoples and transferring sovereignty to a new Palestinian state. Because you are not stupid, you must be doing this for a reason, and that is ultimately to prevent the establishment of a contiguous Palestinian state in which Palestinians could live in freedom and dignity, free of Israeli domination.

There is no use pretending that you are merely expanding settlement blocs because, not only are they in places that make a Palestinian state impossible, but you are legalizing more than 100 outposts and advancing legislation, sponsored by Jewish fundamentalists and the settler movement, which are leading inexorably toward annexation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories (“OPT”). These settlers clearly do not intend to submit to Palestinian law and so they are a permanent obstacle to the 2 state solution. It is therefore obvious to any knowledgeable observer that you have embarked on a comprehensive effort to take West Bank lands for Israel and prevent any Palestinian development there. The entire Area C, constituting 60% of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, is off limits to Palestinian development. While Israeli farms flourish in the Jordan Valley and resorts line the Red Sea, while hundreds of Jewish settlement permits were approved, only one Palestinian building permit was approved in all of 2014 and 2015. Palestinian homes have been demolished at an historically high rate, displacing 1300 Palestinians (including 600 Palestinian children) in 2016 alone. The Israeli agenda is clear: putting in place a one-state reality over all of Israel-Palestine. The era of the 2SS is over.

What kind of Jewish vision is left, Kerry asks us. What kind of subjugation of Palestinians is consistent with Jewish religious and moral values? There are 2.75 million Palestinians living under Jewish military occupation, in the West Bank. They have limited autonomy. They cannot travel without approval. They are living in enclaves with no rights, under occupation that deprives them of basic freedoms. Palestinians live lives that are Separate But Unequal. While Kerry did not utter the word “apartheid,” the reference to American racial segregation was an unmistakable stand-in for it. Will Jewish military and police personnel police the streets of every Palestinian city and town? Will they administer the schools and hospitals? How will they deal with civil rights protests? Unspoken was the fact that Israeli troops and police have shot, killed and maimed Palestinians engaged in peaceful protests for years.

Because this one-state Greater Israel is not consonant with democratic ideals, Americans will not accept it, the world will not accept it, Kerry said. He is right, of course. This is the truth, obvious by the global consensus enunciated in resolutions like this one since 1967. The unspoken question to Jews the world over was, will the Jewish people accept it? Is that the legacy of the Holocaust? It was not enough for 6 million to have perished? We have to end up being oppressors of another people, millions of them, Arabs in an Arab world where we hope and expect to live for the next thousand years?

Friends do not let friends drive drunk. Israel is intoxicated by its military might, its economic success, and its historic American insulation from the pressures of the global consensus that what it is doing is dead wrong. This insulation threatens to continue for at least another four years. The proponents of such insulation are no friends of Israel’s, no friends of the Jews. I think Kerry is wrong about the continued viability of the two state solution, but he is clearly right that the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world will not make a secure and lasting peace with us until we give up the irredentist dream of “all Israel-Palestine for Jews” and agree to accommodate the legitimate national aspirations of the Palestinians.

Another view of the mess over there....

Palestinians take part in a demonstration against the ongoing electricity shortages , in Jabalia in the northern of Gaza Strip, on January 12, 2017. Power shortages in the Palestinian enclave have occurred repeatedly in recent weeks, with homes in Gaza City typically getting around four hours a day - rather than at least eight normally. I am not sorry for the language.

I am very tired of Israel and I proudly say, again and again: Fuck the Occupation.

I also know that since Hamas came to power by being democratically elected in 2006, the international community rejected democracy and refused to deal with them.

Then some Fatah leaders, these so-called ‘socialists’ and ‘seculars’, used this opportunity to limit Hamas’ power which created greater tension in our country, resulting in Hamas’ military factions expelling the PA/Fateh from Gaza.

And that’s the short version.

I love the people of Gaza. I love them more than Hamas and Fateh love them.

No human deserves to live like the people of Gaza.

I was forced to grow up in this political climate. It made it very difficult for us political activists to realize our potential to end the occupation and build a Palestinian state where we can live with freedom, justice, dignity and peace and without any affiliation with any of those parties.

Having to spend so much of our energy to struggle against these co-called ‘Islamic’ or ‘secular’ parties, I am growing more tired of them everyday.

In Gaza, I had to watch behind my back when I talked, when I wrote articles, when I wrote posts on Facebook and Twitter, when I gave seminars or when I walked in the streets of Gaza.

Why?

Because Hamas jailed me for all of that. I have been jailed for calling for social justice, for protesting against the Israeli occupation, for criticizing Hamas on Facebook, for protesting for students’ rights, for demanding to travel out of the country to speak about the Gaza blockade in different countries with different solidarity groups and political organizations.

Hamas has used the last 10 years in Gaza to not only strengthen their presence but to drown out the voices of all those who spoke out against them. The leftists, the seculars or even just young activists beginning to be politically or artistically aware. Anyone who wasn’t sharing their so-called ‘Islamic values’, who weren’t part of this sect/party, have to watch their back.

When I was in Gaza, I was kidnapped, imprisoned, interrogated and abused. I was prevented from traveling and was even prevented from writing online sometimes.

My family was so scared for me after I received death threats from so-called ‘Islamists’ who are part of Hamas.

In those days, I said fuck Hamas many times. I said it, and I say it again, every time, my friends were jailed or whenever I heard about their brutality as I do now in the Jabalia Refugee Camp, where I’m from, where people simply asking them to solve the 12 year-long electricity problem were met with violence.

I am sorry for all these Hamas members who have to go through Islamic brainwashing making them forget that we have a bigger cause to fight alongside everyone. And by everyone, I mean everyone. The seculars, the leftists, the Jews, the Christians. Anyone fighting for human rights and justice deserves our support. This struggle is a political one, one of justice and human rights.

Before I forget: Fuck Fateh.

The Pa/Fateh played a big role in creating mistrust, insecurity and fear. It is the PA’s corruption which was the main reason why Hamas won the elections in 2006 in the first place. Fateh, which refused to be transparent with the Palestinian people and which also violated their rights in the West Bank, isolated Gaza and has refused to reunite with Hamas after more than 10 years.

We need to come together and focus on finding a just peace soon to make the life of Gaza’s remaining children better. I just want peace.

"In 1948 Israel declared its "independence," but chose not to name its borders (Israel may be the only nation in the world with undeclared borders). Following its founding war of 1947-49 Israel came into existence on 78 percent of Palestine, a percentage it has steadily increased in subsequent years, a process that continues today."

I googled "Palestine map" the other day just to see if it had shrunk... but it seems to have disappeared from the middle east.... Well, thats one way to solve a problem..... Out of sight out .....:)

The term "Palestine" has always been just an administrative label, describing what's south of Syria. It's never been a nation, there is no such language etc.

The LoN recognition or assignment of the area, and subsequent post WWII UN declaration, made Israel possible. I think the Holocaust earned them that.

Whatever the borders were back then is academic, the Arab attacks have penciled them in since.

The Jews are better custodians of the place than the Arabs were, indisputable fact.

If you hate Jews, go ahead.

"custodians"?...."the holocaust earned them that"?....LMAO...
Why is it that If someone is critical of Israel, they are anti-semitic?
You really get bent out of shape on this subject tenpoundsless!

Ah, a liberal....

Pray tell, what is your Endlösung, ahem, solution then?

To a neutral observer, it appears as if those "critical" of Israel would in reality happily stand by and watch them burn. What other conclusion could anyone come to?

BTW, the term custodian is quite apt as the entire region is loaded with history relevant to Western civilization. The Muslims have proved themselves less capable in that regard over the past 1,000 years and counting.
