What dose it take to be a competive bodybuilder these days.

Shredded, I know you have discussed cycling carbs. You have also stated that you cycle your carbs one high day, two low days, repeat. Is this your precontest approach? Do you have more high days during offseason or do you stick to this approach year round?

Its actually varies between two or three low carb days and one high, this will be mainly contest dieting, if im not in comp prep then I just try and limit my carbs of a evening if I think im getting too fat.

Love my pizza and ice cream too much during the off season lol.

How long before you could compete, what was your journey like? When did you know, you wanted to be a body builder? Whose plan did you follow first, or what was your initial training like?

I ask because when I read stuff from bodybuilders currently, they are at their end result, they put together a plan for a magazine, but none of it reflects the other substances they used (I know you were natural, some I'm very curious about how you got started, and what your workouts used to look like as you progressed from beginning, to amateur, to pro), or how/what they did to start their journey, when they looked more like the rest of us, and less like amazing physiques.

Wow that's a lot of questions and good ones at that, i'll do my best to answer them.
1 I have always been sporty played football until 16 and was reasonably good at it. First walked into a gym at age 14 and saw a guy doing standing biceps curls, I remember not being able to take my eyes of his biceps, eventually I manage to summon up the courage to ask him would he teach me how to do that, I was hooked.

2 I trained for about 5 years clean when the owner of the guy asked me would I compete for the gym, he offered me gear and I refused but said if he would give me a shot I would compete natural, he took a chance I placed third at a state level. I have never not placed since.

3 My journey was hard, I got told constantly this was a shit sport, mum and dad never understood it and to this day have never seen me win, they don't come to my shows.

4 I never new I wanted to be a bodybuilder what I was looking for was a sport I could do for the rest of my life, in question 1 when I was walking into that gym I was on my way to a karate class, never made that class but the requirements are the same, discipline, mental toughness and the ability to overcome what ever life throws at you and keep moving forward I love the mental toughness side of things, most people physically are the same, its the want to succeed that varies.

5 I never followed anyone's plan to start other than the program my first gym gave me, im like I was born with bucket loads of reason, maybe it was my sporting background but training for me is so instinctive, it come so natural that I find it hard to teach other people as what is so easy for me seems to baffle some. One turning point however was me coming across the book Physco Blast Buy Denny, this book changed the way I trained for ever.

6 I need to correct something as I started this with the best intensions, my pro card is not far of and if I had not been so stubborn and competed in my age division yes I would have it.
As it stands now im the Australian champ in the under 85 kg division (187lbs).

That being said I have personally sat down with a lot of the Olympia contestants, the most memorable being Dorian, again lucky when the IFBB was bring Dorian to Aus he came to our gym, now it just so happens that the gym owners wife was English and came from the same town in England as Dorian.

It was not unusual to find Dorian sitting on the lounge just hanging out like a regular dude, now you now why I say im lucky.

I also worked in the supplement industry here so got to meet everyone of our top bodybuilders, mate I surely have been blessed so that why I say I might not have all the answers but I now where to find them.

7 And I saved this for last on purpose, I never consider myself to look any better than the rest, I have access to some things that others don't and it really gives me pleasure to help you guys out with honest up front no BS answers.

Shredded, bodybuilding is not easy by any means, what really drives you to continue to compete?

I always wanted to be a athlete, I love the life style.
I wanted a sport that I could compete in for a very long time and bodybuilding is it.
I love the fact that im older and most of the younger guys write me off, until I stand next to them lol. I like it because its more of a mind battle these days, it gives me mental toughness.

When its raining and cold outside I love the fact that im outside doing my cardio while my competitors are tucked up on the lounge in front of the TV.

I like people telling me im not going to be competitive, that really puts a fire in my belly.

And last and maybe its a brain fault but I like it because its hard and at times it breaks you down and really makes you examine yourself and what really makes you tick as a person.

Nothing tells you more about your inner self than having to preform at a high level with minimum food while your feeling like crap and your body is telling you to throw in the towel, this is when you find out what your made off and how bad you want it.

Shredded, took about 6 days off at home due to my elbow to see if i could get it to stop raining on me, then went right into a ham/quad day, and just hit your routine for all arm day. I used the preacher curl smith machine, warmed up (after 15min of foam roller warm ups), w/ double handed preachers 2 sets of 20 moderate light weight. then I went on to 6 sets of 15 reps single arm preachers, which felt great . then did bicep cable curls with the v bar, 5-6 sets of 15.. I couldnt believe how much those single arm preachers on the machine isolated with out hurting my elbows. Nice. might be reconsidering some of my db movements for arms all around.

then Tris,
did cable pushdowns supersetted with tri dips 5 sets 15
then tri pulldown on the lat bar with closed underhand grip supersetted with smith tricep machine 5 sets of 15 ea.

Arms felt like they were going to explode. Man I cant wait to lock this routine in, and when i go on cycle the pump will be insane!

Also as I've literally printed a version of ur lifts off for me to somewhat mimic with my trainer - I notice you use mostly smith machine vs free weight . Do u barbell squat in the cage or flat Bench at all shredded ?what advantage are the machines over free weights ?

Smith machine lets me position my body so that it prevents my shoulders from hurting, if you have no injuries I would recommend free weights as they engage more muscles. But at this stage of my career injuries are a night mare and anything that could prevent them is a bonus.

On another note the smith machine lets me place the load exactly where I want in the same plain, let me give a example, front squats are really hard to do but done in the smith machine you can roll the bar back across your shoulders and squat like the bar is sitting on your back, which it is.

Its confusing I know, never seen anyone do this but I promise once I show you squats will never be the same.

Shredded, what is your prediction on who will win the Olympia this year?

Also is it true that it will be broadcasted on national television?

Another good question, I think Phil will win again, ramy is close but his English will let him down, kai I think will always place second he is just not marketable enough.

With regards to the broadcast lets hope so, that question I don't know.

I think you are spot on Shredded. I am a big Kai fan but you are right, he will probably always place behind Phil. Ramy is out of this world though! I cant wait. I heard they will be broadcasting on national cable this year, I hope that is still true. Maybe @dper726 will chime in. I know he is a pro bodybuilding fan as well.

For the first time in I don't know 20 years or so it'll be brought back to national television. But it won't be live feedback of the competition itself but rather the weekend event in general is last I heard. But this year on nbc it'll be broadcasted none the less.

Like you said everything is first done from a marketable point of view. But putting that to the side. Ramy is not there yet in freak size mode on comp date. Kai is just too much. And Phil remains perfect.
