A lot of people don't know how or when to even use them... One guy at the gym uses them on bench. Wtf.
I could go on and on about the fuckery at my gym... The worst is the weirdos asking for a spot on equipment/lifts that you do not need a spot for. Really.. you need me to spot you on lat pulldowns? How does that work, exactly? Oh, you need a spot on leg press? The leg press you're only quarter repping to begin with?
Straps are the least weird thing going on at my gym.
Thought it was funny when a guy used it on incline dumbbell press, not sure how that was supposed to help lol.
The versa's have a small rectangular slightly raised patch at the end of that leather strap that helps to wrap around the handles. Idk what to call it. Seems almost like a magnet. But they feel so good in your hands. A very well thought out design i enjoy very much. Can be wrapped single handedly no problem. The strap naturally wants to find your palm. Its a wonderful thing. Just twist and your locked. Hold up well vs heavy weight as well. I wish i was stronger but ive had 730 pulling on em and they hold up fine. They really shine with dumbbells tho because of their simplicity. Like you said drop sets. I often drop set or giant set back exercises. Heavy rack pulls from mid shin to maybe dumbbell or plate shrugs to maybe behind the back upright rows(hafta look that one up. I think it was Haney that was credited w/ creating that exercise). Grip and twist. Keep it moving. Simple designNo fancy straps for me. Standard $12 double layered webbed cotton 2” straps. No padding or forgiveness for extended back sessions. I have calluses on the inside of both wrists from them.
I get them from my main gym. The owner is a powerlifter and bodybuilder so everything he sells is super heavy duty. Fuckers are rated up to 1200#.
I’ve been eyeballing the versa grips for a while now. They look easier to use in a lot of situations like drop sets where I have to unwrap at least one hand to adjust the weight then re-wrap to continue the set.
I don’t buy gym equipment very often since everything I do buy is made to be abused but my straps will need replacing by the end of the year.
I appreciate the first hand review on them. If you can't tear them up then they should hold up for me also. Most of the guys I see wearing/using them are more concerned that their gym shoes match their shirt and shorts. Not exactly the hard use crowd. The versa's have a small rectangular slightly raised patch at the end of that leather strap that helps to wrap around the handles. Idk what to call it. I've seen this quite a bit when the gym has the fat handled dumbbells. Some guys can't grip them very well or want to use a thumbs under grip so they use straps. I just shake my head and keep moving.Thought it was funny when a guy used it on incline dumbbell press, not sure how that was supposed to help lol.
You could always try training with a Rolling Thunder for a bit. Man that thing is brutal for gripI use them only when I can’t hold onto the bar but can still move the weight. I just got to a 415lb deadlift which I can lift twice in a row but my grip isn’t strong enough to hold it really for one full rep. Weird how I can move 405 without straps but another 10lbs and I can’t hold onto it.
I’m working on grip strength by doing heavy one arm dumbbell rows. It never ceases to amaze me when I see guys at my weight (210-215) move 600+ lbs on a deadlift without straps. I find it fascinating and motivating
Yea I got one of those too. Very humbling to say the least. If you're into ironmind stuff, I got the wicked wrist roller a while back. Torture device man. So smooth and well made. When u mount it on the safety bar in the squat rack you can use it without having to hold the weight up with your shoulders. Forearms are about to explode afterwards. Can barely carry my gym bag out lolYou could always try training with a Rolling Thunder for a bit. Man that thing is brutal for grip
I'm a little too poor to get a fancy one so I made one wirh a wooden dowel and rope lol. Still completely wrecks my forearmsYea I got one of those too. Very humbling to say the least. Yeah man. Just looked it up. That looks brutal. I saw a few YT videos on grip strength guys that compete using this thing. You could always try training with a Rolling Thunder for a bit. Man that thing is brutal for grip
The majority of people in my area have fat gripz because of how well they work. I have the regular and the extremeYeah man. Just looked it up. That looks brutal. I saw a few YT videos on grip strength guys that compete using this thing.
I bought the ‘gripz’ that cover dumbbell handles and I have them in my gym bag but I feel like a loser busting those out. Lol. So I haven’t tried it yet. The rolling thunder has me interested for home training
Yeah?! Ok, maybe I’ll give them a shot in the gym.The majority of people in my area have fat gripz because of how well they work. I have the regular and the extreme
Those sound pretty bad assYeah?! Ok, maybe I’ll give them a shot in the gym.
I see guys using straps for everything and I understand both arguments. Some BB have no use for grip and some do. Me, I prefer strength and a strong grip is something I’m working towards.
I recently bought ‘cobra’ straps. It has a Velcro wrist strap with a cobra looking leather strap that sits in your palm. They work better than traditional straps. I like straps for rack pulls also.
Very true. Those sound pretty bad ass
I think we may not need grip strength as much as others but we certainly need the forearm size
