Crisler

Well I have quite a story to tell regarding Dr. Crisler. In fact, I created an account here simply to post this and get some feedback.

Basically, I have a doctor where I live that I have been working with for quite a while for my hypothyroidism and low testosterone levels. However, I was curious about trying HCG along with the testosterone to see if I would gain any extra benefits (like getting rid of my remaining spare tire), and so I found Crisler's website and decided to give him a go based on some good feedback I found elsewhere.

BIG MISTAKE!

We live in Missouri, and my mother had to have wrist surgery in Colorado (like a 14-hour drive from where we live) back on the 18th. I had paid for my appointment with Crisler which was supposed to be today (12/27) before we left for Colorado. I had also received the paperwork I needed to fill out and had returned that before we left. While we were in Colorado, we paid for an appointment for my father (who suffers from some of the same issues as myself) for the same day as Michigan is also about a 13-hour drive from where we live.

We ended having to stay in Colorado longer than expected as my mother's surgery was more extensive than the surgeon initially thought it would be, and she needed some more intensive physical therapy directly afterward from their specialist team there (by the way, the surgeon was from the Steadman Clinic in Vail, CO, and the rehab team is at Howard Head Sports Medicine -- highly recommended for anyone suffering from any sort of orthopedic problems for which surgery is indicated). We got back home late on Tuesday (12/21), and I called Crisler's office Wednesday to inform them that we would not be able to make our appointments the following Monday (12/27) due to the fact that my father and I both had to take more time off from work than we expected for the surgery. They were not there, and so I left a message. Having heard nothing, I called again on Thursday, and once again, no one was there.

This morning I get a phone call asking me if we were having trouble finding their office. I informed the receptionist that we were not even in Michigan as I had explained in my voice mail from last week. She asked if I wanted to reschedule, and I said that I would but that from the looks of things it would be a few months down the road before I would be able to make the trip up there (my mother has to have another wrist surgery at the end of January and then a hip surgery in March, both requiring more time off from work to help transport her). I then asked for a refund of my money until such time as I could actually make it up for an appointment. She said I would have to talk to Ryan, the office manager, and that she didn't know what he was going to do about that. Okay, fine. Well, he wasn't in yet, so I waited for a phone call from him.

Ryan finally called and once again asked if I would like to reschedule. I reiterated to him the situation and once again asked for a refund. He said he would have to ask the doctor to approve that. Okay, fine. Once again I waited to hear back.

A while later I get a phone call back from Ryan saying that Crisler did not approve any refund in my case but that I could reschedule my appointment. At this point I was getting pretty irate, as you can imagine. I explained to him that it was ridiculous to have $1000 worth of charges on my credit card for the next few months until I could actually come up there and get the services I paid for. He then explained to me that Dr. Crisler had already reviewed my medical records that I sent in (I didn't send any medical records but only filled out the paperwork they sent me) and that because of the amount of time he had invested in doing so and in order to recover the costs of the credit card processing fee and other fees associated with my appointment they could not refund my money as it would represent a net loss in their case.

I tried to explain to him that if they would work with me on this they would definitely have me for a patient but that if they were not then I obviously would have no desire to deal with someone so unyielding for my physician. He seemed unfazed and just continued to tell me that was their policy and his "hands are tied."

After demanding my money back again, he tells me that in the paperwork I filled out there is a clause that as soon as Crisler even looks at your paperwork you automatically owe him your entire consultation cost. I checked the paperwork and sure enough, buried in the legalese, is the clause.

I realize that I made a mistake in not reading the paperwork thoroughly enough, but at the same time, I was never told this on the phone with his receptionist prior to making the appointment, and I can't find it anywhere in plain site on Crisler's website either. To me it seems pretty shady to conduct business like that.

Basically as it stands now the charges are in dispute status with my credit card company pending an investigation into it, but I'm just curious if anyone else has had this kind of problem with Crisler or has any pointers on how I might go about getting my money back.

Thanks if you took the time to read this far.

As far as getting your money back I think your dispute is the best option. Other than that, charging you the full fee for a cancellation is a little obscene.

Well it sucks that this has happened and i hope you get a refund, i was hoping this would be feedback on his actual skills though

So... you're mad about something in the policy... that you didn't read... yet still agreed to.

From Crisler's website

"Although we like to be as flexible as possible, we must require at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or change your appointment. Emergencies are handled on a case by case basis."

The OP gave MORE than 24 hrs notice - "We got back home late on Tuesday (12/21), and I called Crisler's office Wednesday to inform them that we would not be able to make our appointments the following Monday (12/27) due to the fact that my father and I both had to take more time off from work than we expected for the surgery. If Crisler's staff doesn't check the voice mail that is not the OP's problem - However - from reading Crisler's forum I get the opinion he's doing way too many things at once and there have been staffing problems with his office in the past

Have you tried to send an e-mail directly to Crisler?

While I agree that is always good practice, and I did fail in that regard although with everything else going on in my life right now I feel that is understandable, I still have never ever dealt with any physician that requires payment upon only submitting your paperwork. Therefore, I never would have dreamed that was part of the stuff I signed.

I have not emailed him directly, I guess I need to check the website again and see if his email is up there or not. I did try to call in and talk to him myself, but I was informed by his very snide secretary that he only speaks to people with appointments. Must be nice, I thought to myself.

Sounds typical of Crisler, unfortunately.

His office is currently denying me my medical records. I have requested them three times and the office has not returned my calls or e-mails whatsoever.

Crisler puts a "gag order" on patients that he does not like and instructs his staff not to respond to them. I'm not making this up. Check out his forums, and you will see that he openly admits to this type of practice.

I am going to file a complaint with his state medical board. I simply want a one-time copy (or originals) of the bloodwork he did for me, and I am willing to pay his "copying fee."

The guy is insane.

When dealing with hormones a paitent needs to have an open line of communication because anything can go wrong especially with thyroid, testosterone, adrenal imbalances. I get a few emails a week were people are having adverse reactions to medicine because of complexity of cases. These people need immediate response with in 24 hours inorder to get proper medical assistance where modifiications can be made. If anything goes wrong the Dr is liable for his patients opening him up to potential law suits. There have been some instances where people had to be refered to Emergency room because later we found out that they where tampering with meds trying to adjust them on their own. The first thing that we mention to people is that if you have any issue please contact the office or email. I answer my email pretty much all day as well even on weekends because I know how important it is to have a good patient relationships which I did not recieve in the past. I was usually put on protocol and told to come back in 3 months. For those 3 months I suffered and did not need to be. So next time or any one else who reads this they may want to ask about these issues above before proceeding. In defense of Dr crisler, you signed the paper work and since it was in there it is a legal binding contract. Many dr's have hired good lawyers to look over there contracts to cover their asses that is what they get paid to do. So just take this as a learning lesson for next time. Now do what you have to do to get this properly resolved.

This has nothing to do with this topic, but it does nicely market your 'services'. Well done.

It's about having access to your dr when you need it not being out to dry who ever your dr is. Typical visit to endo "here's androgel see you in 3 months" if thats how a patient should be treated that's not acceptable IMO, I have been there and it sucks. I am trying to read this as objectivley as I can, but it just sounds like you are trying to get out of your contract for some reason. I don't understand why you even had to go to the wrist surgery since your father is alive and available to drive your mom.
If you are legite, then reset the appointment when you can go, and you haven't lost anything. I can't tell from your post what stopped you from going to the original appointment.

The OP gave MORE than 24 hours notice - if he left 2 voice mails and the Dr's secretary/office manager didn't respond to them - then the OP SHOULD get a refund - IMHO

BTW - his reasons for not going are irrevalent - he gave sufficient notice - case closed

The Cult Of Crisler

It is pretty much a "cult" over there. There are dudes who literally drop on their knees to suck his c**k. And he seems to enjoy that sort of thing too

I had made an appointment earlier this summer to see Crisler, and i had even picked out a date. I did not make any sort of payments and I cancelled my appointment after i decided i wasn't comfortable with the politics, and general unprofessionalism on that forum.

This post just confirms that Crislier is first and foremost about the DINERO and second about dudes kissing his ass and telling him he is the best thing since sliced bread.

Not the type of guy i would personally like to work with for longterm treatment.

Guys on this forum (including you HAN) overcomplicate things.

Think it works for >95% of us, even without seeing an endo. Hell that's what my GP has me doing, I got no issues with it. Most of them dudes ain't here, though.

Thought that's what these forums were for.

I joined this forum the same day I joined AllThingsMale just after my low T diagnosis. I received valuable advice from both at a time when I needed it. I don't drink any fucking KoolAid and kinda resent it when someone insinuates I do.

There are dudes who literally drop on their knees to suck his c**k. And he seems to enjoy that sort of thing too.
And that statement is representative of why I gravitated to the other forum.
